Hello, everyone. I am very pleased to have the opportunity to talk about my teaching ideas. The lesson I am going to talk about is taken from Section A Period Two in Unit 7 for Grade Seven students in Go For It. I am going to talk about the main points and difficult points first. Skim the text, we can conclude the following main points.
First, to increase the student knowledge about different words of clothes and colors.
Second, to increase the student knowledge of how to ask and answer about shopping, using the target languge “How much is this/ that…?” “How much are these/ those…?”
Difficuties: To make the students learn to ask and answer quwstions about shopping.
States and function: The main purpose of this lesson is to make successful small talk with different people talking about shopping. For the students, this content is very closed to their real life.
Teaching Aims:
Aims of knowledge: Be able to learn the new words and phrases about clothes and colors. Learn to make conversations appropriately by using the expressions “How much is this/ that…?” “How much are these/ those…?”
Aims of abilities: Be able to introduce different clothes, colors and prices. To master the skills of making successful conversations in shopping.
Aims of emotion: Be able to develop good qualities by asking and answering questions about shopping in polite ways and learn to take care of others.
Teaching Methods:
In this lesson, I will mainly use task-based language teaching. I will lead the students to study and cooperate with each other. In order to make class lively and the students can learn easily, I will use the multi-media computer system. It can help to attract the student attention and keep up their interest in English about this lesson.
Based on the main points and difficult points of this lesson, I design the following activities to finish the main tasks:
At first, I will let the students guess the information about the teacher. This part is to attract the student attention, and keep up their interest in this class.
Then, I will ask the students to play a chant which is about clothes and numbers. This part is also to attract the student attention. And also, it can help the students review the knowledge that they have learnt before.
After the chant, I will start to get in the teaching procedures by reading a sentence in the chant. “Come back again.”
T: “Who will often say this sentence to you?” Guide the students to say out “Clerk.” T: “So, today, I will take you to go shopping with me. If we want to buy things, we must know how to say the things. So let’s see if you know how to say the things in English. You can get a star if your answer is right. ” This part is a revision of previous lesson. Students will be full of passion with the help of competition.
Next, I will raise a quick eye competition to check how the students have mastered the knowledge of clothes, colors and prices.
Then, I will get the students to make dialogues in pairs using the target language “How much is this/ that…? How much are these/ those…?”. And also, I will guide them to answer questions using “It’s/ They’re…dollars/ yuan.” This part can help students better master the knowledge of making successful conversations about shopping.
Later, I will get the studetns to listen to a conversation about shopping. Have them answer three easy questions first. “What does the woman want to buy? What color does she like? How much is it?” Then, get the students to finish the listening materials with the proper given words. Finally, I will play the tape again and have them check the answers. After doing this, I will invite two students to read the conversation in class. This part is to increase the student abilities of listening and writing. Their skills of getting main information will also be developed.
Next comes the play time. The students will be given some time to practice the dialugues of buying gifts for their parents or friends for the coming Christmas. But before they peform, I will ask them to think about what the clerk and customers will say if they are shopping. Students can use the sentences on the blackboard. Then, I will invite several pairs to perform, and the rest students need to take some notes and will have the chance to answer questions about what other classmates talked about.
Then, students need to ask their group members what they will buy for their parents or friends. And also, they will have to make a report about their group members’ information. I will invite some students to make a report in class. This part is a conprehensive check about whether the students can well use the target languages or not. Their comprehensive ability of using language will be well showed in this part.
Finally, I will raise some exercise to see if the students have understood the knowledge.
As for conclusion, I will say “In this class, I see all of you want to buy your parents or friends a gift for the Christmas! You are really nice! But I do think the best gifts for your parents or friends are that your care for them and you love them. So, please tell your parents or friends that you love them often!” The aims of emotion of this class will be demonstrated clearly here.
For the homework, I ask the students to recite the sentences in Grammar Focus and to make a dialogue about shopping in the supermarket.
After this lesson, I think there will be at least three advanced aspects:
Students’ knowledge and understanding of shopping will be assessed through the tasks.
Students’ communicating skills will be evaluated by their oral presentation.
Students’ ability of using the expressions “How much is this/ that…? How much are these/ those…?” will be assessed through the conversations they have made in class.
That’s all. Thank you for listening!
