Unit 2 Reading Sports events ----Reading comprehension Teaching aims: 1. Arouse students’ interest in talking about Olympics. 2. Help students develop their reading ability. 3. Help students retell what they’ve got in the reading. 4. Encourage students to express their opinion on the Olympics. Teaching procedures: Step 1 Lead-in The teacher starts the lesson with a short video about the Olympics as well as a series of pictures taken in the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics. Step 2 Reading strategy Show the definition of a speech and ways to make a good speech. Step 3 Fast reading Raise three questions from the reading passage, ask students to read it quickly to find out the answers directly. 1. What is the speech about? 2. What was Pierre de Coubertin’s hope when he brought the Olympic Games back to life? 3. What does the speaker wish for at the end of the speech? Step 4 Structure reading Check students’ understanding of the structure of the passage.
