The measure of man’s real character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.
——Thomas Macaulay
Some thirty years ago, I was studying in a public school in New York. One day, Mrs Nanette O’Neill gave an arithmetic (1) _____ to our class. When the papers were (2) _____ she discovered that twelve boys had made exactly the (3) _____ mistakes throughout the test. There is nothing really new about (4) _____ in exams. Perhaps that was why Mrs O’Neill (5) _____ even say a word about it. She only asked the twelve boys to (6) _____ after class. I was one of the twelve. Mrs O’Neill asked no questions, and she didn’t (7) _____ us either. Instead, she wrote on the blackboard the (8) _____ words by Thomas Macaulay. She then ordered us to (9) _____ these words into our exercise-books one hundred times.
I don’t (10) _____ about the order eleven boys. Speaking for myself I can say: it was the most important single (11) _____ of my life. Thirty years after being (12) _____ to Macaulay’s words, they still seem to me the best yardstick(准绳), because they give us a (13) _____ to measure ourselves rather than others. Few of us are asked to make (14) _____ decisions about nations going to war or armies going to battle. But all of us are called (15) _____ daily to make a great many personal decisions. (16) _____ the wallet, found in the street, be put into a pocket or turned over to the policeman? Should the (17) _____ change received at the store be forgotten or (18) _____? Nobody will know except (19) _____. But you have to live with yourself, and it is always (20) _____ to live with someone you respect.

The journey to the moon has been the first step towards future exploration in space. The distance between the Moon and the Earth is very short indeed when compared with the distances between the Earth and other planets. Mars, the nearest planet to Earth is millions of miles away! Traveling to the planets will be man’s next aim. Such travels will be more difficult than the trip to the moon and certainly more adventurous.
Recently, two American spaceships, Virkings 1 and 2, landed on Mars, trying to discover whether that planet has any life on it. So far the signs of life on Mars has neither confirmed nor ruled out. Russians have discovered that the surface of Venus is so hot that it is almost certain that there is no life there. Also the atmosphere of Venus is very dense and the pressure is nearly a hundred times greater than that of the Earth’s atmosphere.
Scientists believe man may find planets which have the same conditions as those we have on the Earth, but man should realize the Earth will be his only home for a long time and begin to love and care for it.
