Sleep
Everyone needs sleep to live.

When we sleep, we lie down. Our bodies rest because we are not moving. Our stomachs rest because we are not eating. Our lungs rest because we are not breathing so fast. Our eyes rest because they are not looking at anything. The work our bodies do while we are awake goes on while we sleep. But it goes on more slowly.
Animals need sleep, too. But some animals do not lie down and close their eyes, as we do.
Sometimes, it is hard to tell whether a cow is asleep or awake because we do not often see cows close their eyes.
Horses sleep standing up. Cranes not only sleep standing up, but they sleep standing on one leg!

Future Telephones
A person’s voice can travel all the way around the world. Today people can use the phone to talk with others almost anywhere on the earth.
Now people are able to listen to and talk to a person far away. It’s great to talk to people on the phone. It’s almost as nice as visiting the person. But it is not really the same thing. When you visit, you see a person, but when you use the phone, you don’t see the person you’re talking with.
That may change in the near future.
Today some people are using a kind of telephone called picture phone. With it, two people who are talking can see each other.
Picture phones can be very useful when you have something to show the person you’re calling. One day you may be able to phone a library and ask to read a book. Then you’ll be able to read the book right over your picture phone.
Or you may be able to go shopping through your picture phone. Let’s say, you see something in the newspaper that you want to buy. You will go to your phone and call the shop. People at the shop will show you the thing you want right over the phone. You’ll be able to shop all over the town and never even leave your room!

People want to know how fish can hear sounds without ears. But fish do have ears. We cannot see the ears because they are inside their bodies, and they hear very well with them. Their listening is much better than man’s.

Many water animals make noises while they are doing something. Sounds are real words of them. By sounds, they know where they are and which way to go. When they face danger or they find food, they always make sounds to tell others the good news.
A new field in science is to learn the meanings of underwater sounds. People use the same skill that they have used in learning the secrets of birds’ calls. But this method is more difficult to use in the sea because many of the sea animals cannot be easily followed and studied. We have not any other better way to study the sounds in the sea. Perhaps the meaning of the calls of the sea animals will be known more clearly someday. It will be useful for us to learn the secrets of the sounds in the sea.
