Most people around the world are right-handed. This also seems to be true in history. In 1799, scientists studied works (作品) of art made at different times from 1, 500 B. C. to the 1950s. Most of the people shown in these works are right-handed, so the scientists guessed that right-handedness has always been common through history. Today, only about 10% to 15% of the world’s population is left-handed.
Why are there more right-handed people than left-handed ones? Scientists now know that a person’s two hands each have their own jobs. For most people, the left hand is used to find things or hold things. The right hand is used to work with things. This is because of the different work of the two sides of the brain. The right side of the brain, which makes a person’s hands and eyes work together, controls the left hand. The left-side of the brain, which controls the right hand, is the centre for thinking and doing problems. These findings show that more artists should be left-handed, and studies have found that left-handedness is twice as common among artists than among people in other jobs.
No one really knows what makes a person become right-handed instead of being left-handed. Scientists have found that almost 40% of the people become left-handed because their main brain is damaged when they are born. However, this doesn’t happen to everyone, so scientists guess there must be another reason why people become left-handed. One idea is that people usually get right-handed from their parents. If a person does not receive the gene (基因) for right-handedness, he/she may become either right- or left-handed according to the chance and the people they work or live with.
Though right-handedness is more common than left-handedness, people no longer think left-handed people are strange or unusual. A long time ago, left-handed children were made to use their right hands like other children, but today they don’t have to.

Using computers, watching television and listening to music are nearly a full-time activity for most US children, with the average 8 to 18-year-olds taking in 6.5 hours a day, a report has said. The study by the Kaiser Family Foundation was one of the few national efforts to find out how much time children spend on television and other media. The data were collected from classroom questionnaires given to more than 2,000 US schoolchildren in Grades 3 to 13.
Just over half said their families had no rules on watching television. 68% said they had a television in their bedroom, half had a VCR or DVD player and 31% had a computer in the bedroom.
The youngest children watched the most television, with 8 to 10-year-olds watching more than four hours a day on average, including video games. On the whole the children watched 3 hours and 51 minutes of television on average.
However, the study found that children who said that they spent the most time with their parents were also the ones who reported watching the most television. “Perhaps that’s how kids and their parents spend time together,” said the report.
There was also a link between heavy use of video games and low grades, and this held true to a lesser degree for watching television or listening to music. Fears that electronic media would rob children of more old-fashioned skills seem unfounded, the report finds. “In a typical day, nearly three out of four (73%) of young people say that they read for pleasure,” the report reads. “On average, 8 to 18-year-olds spend about three-quarters of an hour a day reading,” it added. “Interestingly, those young people who spend the most time watching TV (the 20% who watch more than five hours a day) don’t say that they spend any less time reading than other young people do.”
60. According to the questionnaires, students of higher grades use _______ lower grades.
A. less video games than B. more video games than
C. as much video games as D. no more video games than
61. From the passage, we can know many more children have _______ in their bedrooms.

Can people change their skin color without suffering like pop king Michael Jackson? Perhaps yes. Scientists have found the gene that determines skin color.
The gene comes in two versions, one of which is found in 99 per cent of Europeans. The other is found in 93 to 100 per cent of Africans, researchers at Pennsylvania State University report in the latest issue of Science.
Scientists have changed the color of a dark-striped zebra fish to uniform gold by inserting(插入) a version of the pigment gene into a young fish. As with humans, zebra fish skin color is determined by pigment(色素)cells, which contain melanosomes(黑色素). The number, size and darkness of melanosomes per pigment cell determines skin color.
It appears that, like the golden zebra fish, light-skinned Europeans also have a mutation(突变) in the gene for melanosome production. This results in less pigmented skin.
However, Keith Cheng, leader of the research team, points out that the mutation is different in human and zebra fish genes.
Humans acquired dark skin in Africa about 1.5 million years ago to protect bodies from ultra-violet rays of the sun, which can cause skin cancer.
But when modern humans leave Africa to live in northern latitudes, they need more sunlight on their skin to produce vitamin D. So the related gene changes, according to Cheng.
Asians have the same version of the gene as Africans, so they probably acquired their light skin through the action of some other gene that affects skin color, said Cheng.
The new discovery could lead to medical treatments for skin cancer. It also could lead to research into ways to change skin color without damaging it like chemical treatment did on Michael Jackson.
63. The passage mainly tells us that ________.
A. people can not change their skin color without any pain
B. the new discovery could lead to search into ways to change skin color safely
C. pop king Michael Jackson often changed his skin color as he liked
D. scientists have found out that people’s skin color is determined by the gene
64. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A. nowadays people who want to change their skin color have to suffer a lot from the damage caused by the chemical treatment
B. Europeans and Africans have the same gene
C. the new discovery could help to find medical treatments for skin cancer
D. there are two kinds of genes
65. Scientists have done an experiment on a dark-striped zebra fish in order to ________.
A. find the different genes of humans’
B. prove the humans’ skin color is determined by the pigment gene
C. find out the reason why the Africans’ skin color is dark
D. find out the ways of changing people’s skin color
