Unit12 Reading
About Western Manners
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Today I’m very glad to be here sharing my lesson with you. I hope you can give me some useful advice. The content of my lesson is the reading in Unit12—About Western Manners in Vocational English Book One. I divided my interpretation into seven parts: analysis of teaching material, analysis of students, teaching and learning methods, teaching aids, teaching process, and teaching reflection.
1. Analysis of teaching material
Now let’s begin with part 1-- analysis of teaching material.
First, I will say something about the lesson. The topic is About Western Manners. This lesson is reading. It plays an important role in the English learning of this unit and in the whole vocational English learning. In this lesson, we lay particular emphasis on developing students’ reading skills. It focuses on students' abilities to deal with information and express in English. By learning this lesson, students can know something about western manners. Moreover, students can practice their oral English and develop their understanding ability. So I’ll get students to master some useful expressions about it. Students will learn to use these expressions in different situations.
Second, according to my understanding of this lesson, let me talk about the teaching aims. The knowledge objects of this period are to make students understand the meaning of the text and to make sure students can master some useful expressions. At the end of this lesson, enable students to their own habits with these expressions. The ability aims are to develop students’ basic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, especially reading and to train students’ ability of translation. For emotional goals, I’ll increase students’ interests in English and set up their self-confidence in English learning. At the same time, I’ll put the manner education in this lesson. To make the students know some bad habits in school, and guide them to correct.
According to my point, the teaching important points for the students in this period are to let students learn some new words and phrases and to have students master some important expressions in the text. In addition, have students know that western manners differ only slightly from good Chinese manners in school. The teaching difficult points are to make students to know some more useful expressions about expressing someone’s habits and enable students to express their own habits as much as they can.
When I deal with this lesson, I’ll do my best to carry out the theories of the new curriculum, such as task-based teaching and learning; cooperative learning and make students become the real masters in the classroom while I am only the director and instructor. In addition, let students get some manner education while they are learning English.
2. Analysis of the students
Next I must say something about my students. As we know, a large number of the students in our school are not very interested in English. Their basis of the English language is poor. In their opinions, English is not very useful for their technology learning. So a lot of them have little interest in English learning. They are frightened to open their mouths to speak in English. What we must do is to encourage them to say more and more English sentences in this lesson.
3. Teaching methods and learning methods
Now I’ll introduce the teaching methods in this lesson. In general, I use the five step teaching method to design this lesson. Furthermore, task-based language teaching, communicative teaching are also included. According to the modern social communication teaching theories, I adopt situational language teaching method and task-based language teaching method.
4. The teaching aids
In this lesson, I’ll make full use of multi-media computer system, the projector and the blackboard. They will be very useful and helpful in my lesson.
5. Teaching procedures
Next please let me introduce the important part of my speech, the teaching procedures. I have designed the following steps.
STEP 1.Warming-up
First, I’ll have a free talk with students and lead them to answer some simple questions:
Do you have the habit of eating breakfast?
Do you have the good habit of finishing your homework before you go to bed?
In this period, I’ll encourage more students to talk with me.
STEP 2.Discussion
(1) Ask students to look at some pictures. In these pictures, they can see a lot of situations about bad habits. Then I’ll ask some questions:
What are they doing?
Do you think they are good habits or bad habits?
(2) Let students have a discussion in pairs and share their opinions in the class.
In this period, I’ll guide students to have a right attitude towards good manners and lead in the learning of the following text.
STEP 3.Presentation
(1) Ask students to read the text silently by themselves and try to answer the following questions:
What is the reading mainly about?
What is your idea of good school manners?
What should you do if you have something to say on the subject?
Make sure they can catch the answers correctly.
(2) Have students read the text after the tape, and then read again by themselves.
(3) Encourage some students to translate the text into Chinese one by one. The teacher will give some help.
(4) Pay attention to some important phrases:
differ from, catch somebody’s eye, take away,
in the air, show off, keep silent
I will write them down on the blackboard.
STEP 4.Practice
(1) First, ask some students to read the text in the class. Pay attention to their pronunciation.
(2) Next, do exercise1 on Page142. (Choose the best answer.) Share the answers in the class.
During this period, let students practice more and more and consolidate the
text translation.
Step 5.Group-discussion
Talk about the differences between western manners and Chinese manners?
1.Divide students into 6 groups ,give them 4 minutes to read the passage again ,then fill in the blanks.
Country
Greeting the teacher
Coming late
Talking in class
Western countries
China
2.Choose the winners according to their performance, Encourage them to speak English as much as possible.
STEP 6.Homework
I think homework is very important for students to consolidate the content in this lesson. So I assign the following homework:
(1) Revise the new words on Page139.
(2) Read the text fluently.
(3) Do exercise2 and exercise3 on Page143.
6. Blackboard design
Unit 12 Reading
About Western Manners
Useful expressions
differ from catch somebody’s eye
take away in the air
show off keep silent
OK. Let me show you my blackboard design: The title is in the middle. While students translate the text into Chinese, I will write them down on the blackboard. The blackboard design is to let students learn the useful expressions easier. It will help them to make sentences.
7. Teaching reflection
In this lesson, I’ll lead students to master some useful expressions. First I should attract my students on my teaching. The students will get more courage from me to express their own habits. During the whole period I just act as a director. I should give them more chance to read English, and so as to improve their reading skills.
OK. That’s all my interpretation. Thank you for your attention!
