Reasons for Japan’s Invasion to China
September 18th, 1931 was a unforgettable day for Chinese people, for it was the beginning of the darkest period in china’s history. On that day, the Japanese army which had been occupying part of Northeastern China for a period, bombed a bridge at Japan owned and operated railroad crossing. The Japan’s government then blamed this attack on Chinese rebels. This action known as “the September 18th Incident” , which a pretext for the Japanese army to begin its invasion to China.
This incident broke out in Shenyang where the museum for “the September 18th Incident” has been built. I was born and raised in this place, thus I would like to analyze the reasons for this incident and the reasons for Japanese invasion from two points of view: Japan’s requirement and Chinese turbulent situation
The first reason for Japan’s Invasion was its requirements. The war was the result of a decade-long Japanese imperialist policy aiming to dominate China politically and militarily so as to secure its vast raw material reserves and other economic resources, particularly food and labor. Japan saw Northeastern of China as a buffer indirect state against the Soviet Union in north. In addition, Japan received a lot of military supports and other economic helps from Germany and Italy, which were imperialist states as well. Those imperialist countries, including Japan, were planning to carve up the rest of the world. Besides above factors, as a result of aggressiveness education, Japanese youth were aggressive, conceit and cold hearted. They regarded that Japanese Kingdom was invincible. Therefore, they made every possible effort to instigate this war.
The most one of major causes was the poor situation of China, which provided an opportunity for Japan to achieve its evil goals. Frankly speaking, China was in a huge mess during that time. The Qing Dynasty was on the brink of collapsing from internal revolts and foreign imperialism, while Japan preceded a revolution and had emerged as a great power through its effective methods of modernization. However, after the Xinhai Revolution in China which overthrew the Qing Dynasty disintegrated and the Republic’s authorities succumbed to that of regional warlords. Unifying the nation and repelling imperialism seemed a very remote possibility. Some warlords even aligned themselves with various foreign powers in an effort to wipe each other out. The September 18th incident broke out when the warlord Zhang Zuolin of Manchuria openly cooperated with the Japanese for military and economic assistance.
In conclusion, causes for this Japan’s Invasion were complicate. The major of them were: Japan’s requirement for resources and Northeast of china had abundant resources with labors and markets as well. The help from other imperialist countries approve the weapons of Japan; the aggressiveness education gave Japanese confidence to start this war. By the same period, China was going through a turbulent time; the warlords’ cooperation and traitor to china offered Japan opportunity of invasion. There is no doubt that those reasons are not comprehensive, but Japan and China were on the completely different military and economic level is the basic cause of the incident.
