Stephen Hawking's book A Brief History of Time was a huge commercial success．Its achievements in bringing difficult scientific ideas to a wide audience are not so clear．Now the distinguished physicist has teamed up with his daughter Lucy to produce a children's book designed to communicate contemporary physics．Will it capture the attention of young minds and teach them some real science? Or will it be boring and over the heads of the prospective readers?
George's Secret Key to the Universe is an adventure story complete with villains and hero and is illustrated with enjoyable line-drawings．It involves a lost pig, a humorously portrayed intelligent computer, school bullies and a trip through the Solar System．Didactic discussions on aspects of modern physics, such as supernova explosions and black-hole physics are hung on this set-up．There are also fact boxes on physics and astronomy, and some photographs of astronomical phenomena: planets, comets, galaxies and so on．Overall, the book is a serious effort to convey facts and ideas in present day astronomy and astrophysics, within a science-fiction adventure story．
The mixture is great．Children love facts and adventure stories．The combination will catch their interest and keep them occupied for hours．After ten minutes of leafing through the book, my granddaughter Ruby was deeply absorbed and I had to promise to bring it back for her to read after I had completed my review．Like any educational tool, it will succeed for some and not for others．I suppose there should be more of the former．

Several times my daughter had telephoned to say, “Mother, you must come to see the daffodils （水仙花）before they are over．” I wanted to go, but it was a two-hour drive from Laguna to Lake Arrowhead, “I will come next Tuesday, I promised a little unwillingly on her third call
The next Tuesday dawned cold and rainy．Still, I had promised, and I drove there．When I finally walked into Carolyn^ house I was welcomed by the joyful sounds of happy children．I delightedly hugged and greeted my grandchildren．
“Forget the daffodils, Carolyn! The road is invisible in these clouds and fog, and there is nothing in the world except you and these children that I want to see badly enough to drive another inch!”

Pretending to be happy can actually make you more miserable 一 especially if you're a woman, according to a new study．
The research found that women suffered more than men when pretending to be happy．Psychologist Dr Brent Scott, who led the study» said employers should take note because forcing workers to smile when dealing with customers can backfire．He said： ‘‘Smiling for the sake of smiling throughout the day can lead to emotional exhaustion （枯竭）and then withdraw from work, so their productivity drops and that's bad for the organization, ” He added ： “Bosses may think that getting their staff to smile is good for the organization, but that's not necessarily the case．”
Dr Scott, assistant professor of management at Michigan State University, analyzed a group of bus drivers during a two-week period．His team examined the effects of ‘‘surface acting” 一 pretending to smile, compared with what was termed “deep acting” 一 cultivating （培养）positive emotions by recalling pleasant memories．He said： “Women were harmed more by surface acting» meaning their mood worsened even more than the men and they withdrew more from work．” However, they were helped more by deep acting, which means their mood improved more and they withdrew less．
Therefore，pretending to be happy while feeling down is more likely to go against their normal behavior and cause more harmful feelings．Although ,“deep acting” seemed to improve mood in the short-term, Dr Scott says it's not a long-term solution （解决方 法）to feeling unhappy．He said： “You’re trying to cultivate positive emotions, but at the end of the day you may not feel like yourself anymore．”
