It would be hard for a family to live on 300 yuan a month, wouldn’t it?
That’s how much Li Hua’s family have to live on for a whole year. The world is now trying to help people like Li Hua to live better.
From Tuesday until today, 2,000 government leaders(领导人)and scientists met in Shanghai to talk about stopping poverty(贫穷) around the world.
According to the United Nations, the poorest people in the world live on less than 8.5 yuan a day.
Most of those people live in African countries like Sierra Leone and Somalia. These countries have wars and lots of diseases. Now, more than 1 billion people in the world 1ive in poverty. The UN said that by 2015, that number should be cut in half.
To help China’s poor, the World Bank has given more than 37 billion yuan to help China build railways and schools and stop river pollution and deserts.
Many places in China’s countryside, like Li Hua’s home in Chongqing, are very poor. Li Hua, 13, lives with her mother, two grandparents and 16-year-old brother in Chongqing. Her father is dead. The family make their living by planting crops. They have no TV, no electric fan or telephone.

Do you know you could get sick just by walking past a building? The bacteria(细菌) that cause Legionnaire's disease(疾病) grow very fast in large modern buildings. They are carried by air through the buildings and outside. Legionnaire's disease is only one of the illnesses that are caused by "sick buildings".
Some buildings can make you ill because their heating and air-conditioning(空调调节系统) are controlled. Air from outside cannot get in through the closed windows. This indoor air pollution is a growing problem.
Legionnaire's disease may be the most serious result of sick buildings, but other unpleasant illnesses can appear. People who work in some buildings suffer(受苦) from tiredness, feeling sick and headaches. Their offices look bright and clean, but invisible(无形的) and dangerous bacteria are in the air around them.
There is an answer to the problem. The air-conditioning and heating can be tested for bacteria. Once the tests are finished, the sick buildings can be cured. This is expensive to do, but the results are good. The people in the buildings no longer get sick, and everybody is happier.
