Title: How to make your digestive system work well
Teaching Type: Reading & writing
Teaching Aims:
l Learn the structure of an exposition: Topic – examples -- conclusion.
l Learn the passage and use reading strategies to have a good command of the passage.
l Write a summary of the passage using the expository pattern and rules for summary writing.
Teaching Focus:
l How to read an exposition with the help of an expository pattern including Topic, examples and conclusion.
l How to write a summary of an exposition based on an expository pattern and specific requirements for summary writing.
Teaching Procedures:
Step I Pre-reading
Teacher’s Activities What will the T do?
1. Tell students the objectives of the lesson: read a passage and write a summary of it.
2. Ask students the following questions and get them to know what a summary is about:
What is a summary?
What is the genre of the passage? (an expository essay)
What do you expect to know about an expository essay? (what / how / why)
3. Show students the structure of an exposition: The topic (what?), The reason(why?), The effects (how?) and the solution/conclusion
Students’ Activities What will the Ss do?
1. Learn the objectives of the lesson: read a passage and write a summary of it.
2. Learn what a summary is and the requirements of it.
3. Read the passage and figure out the genre. (exposition)
4. Learn the structure of an exposition: the topic (what?), the reason (why?), the effects (how?) and the solution/conclusion.
Aims Purposes of stages
1. Make students aware of the learning objectives at the beginning of the class.
2. Practice students reading ability: how to read an expository writing.
3. Get students to learn the structure of an exposition to help them understand the passage.
Step II Reading
Teacher’s Activities What will the T do?
1. Get students to read the passage quickly and find out the topic of the passage.
2. Ask the students to try to paraphrase the topic sentence.
3. Present some possible paraphrases on the screen.
4. Get students to read the passage carefully and find out the key points of each paragraph
5. Ask the students to try to paraphrase the key points of each paragraph in groups and ask them to share their work
6. Ask the students whether they should keep the conclusion and how should they paraphrase it.
7. Ask the students to share their paraphrase and present some possible versions
Students’ Activities What will the Ss do?
1. The students will read the passage quickly and find out the topic of the passage.
2. The students will try to paraphrase the topic sentence
3. Present some possible paraphrases on the screen.
4. The students will read the passage carefully and find out the key points of each paragraph
5. The students will try to paraphrase the key points of each paragraph in groups and ask them to share their work
6. The students will decide whether they should keep the conclusion and how should they paraphrase it.
7. The students will share their paraphrase and present some possible versions
Aims Purposes of stages
1. Get students to read the whole passage and learn the passage.
2. Get students to read the passage based on the pattern of an expository writing.
3. Practice students reading strategies.
4. Help Ss to realize the importance of sticking to good habits
Step Ⅲ Summary writing
Teacher’s Activities What will the T do?
1. Show them the requirements of a summary writing:
No comments Cover all the key points and No details
use your own words choose proper transitions a 60-word summary
2. Get students to summarize the passage based on the key points
3. Get students to present it on the blackboard or on the screen.
4. Give comments on the writing.
5. Get them to combine each part coherently.
Students’ Activities What will the Ss do?
1. Learn the requirements of a summary writing:
No comments cover all the key points and No details
Use your own words choose proper transitions a 60-word summary
2. Summarize each part in their own words
3. Present it on the blackboard or the screen.
4. Combine each part coherently.
