Dear Henry,
I’m glad to receive your letter. It’s a pleasure to tell you my plan for this coming summer vacation.
First of all, I’ll spend some time staying with my parents, chatting with them and doing some housework, which will make them very happy. After all, they’ve done so much for me.Besides, I’ll do some reading for fun, and for knowledge as well.If possible, I’ll take part in some social activities so that I can know more about society and improve my abilities.Travelling, which will broaden our horizons, is also a good choice, isn’t it?
Best wishes!
Your sincerely,
Li Hua

W: Yes, he spends three quarters of an hour jogging and half an hour jumping rope.
Text 3
W: Peter, let’s go. I want to buy some candy at the store before it closes.
M: I can’t go with you today. I have to finish my homework here. My parents are working overtime, and I didn’t take my house keys.

W: You always read at home on weekends. We haven’t been to a movie in nearly half a year.
M: But there aren’t any good movies out now. Nothing can compare to reading books.
W: You should be a writer since you like books so much.
Text 6
W: A large amount of waste is thrown away every day, including home appliances, plastic, paper, and construction materials. Throwing these thins away is bad for the environment. They should be recycled.
M: You’re right. I read in the newspaper that more and more recycling centers are being built in our city. Waste is gathered, sorted, and transported out of the city to be recycled.
W: Where is the waste sent?
M: Well, If you are interested, I have a lot of books about waste treatment. You could come over to my house to read them with me, and then you could go to some recycling centers to do a survey.
W: That sounds good. What a great topic for my midterm paper! I’ll write about waste treatment!
M: I’m sure you’ll do a great job.
Text 7
W: Oh no! I hate these long delays!
M: I know. I can’t wait to get home. I’ve been travelling on business for the last month. I really miss my family.
W: A month is a long time to be away. Do you have any children?
M: I have three, two boys and a girl. Would you like to see a picture of them?
W: Sure… Oh, how nice! Now, who’s this?
M: This is Judy, my oldest. She’s twenty-four.
W: Is she married?
M: Yes, she is. And these are my two sons, Jamie and Julian.
W: How old are they?
M: Jamie is twenty-one. He’s in college now. Julian is seventeen. That’s my wife, Beth, next to my daughter.

The western part of the city was hit by several storms last night, causing serious damage and cutting water and power to at least two hundred homes. Scores of families were left homeless because the roofs of their houses were blown away. The destruction can be seen everywhere. On Main Street, the parking lot was completely flooded, and some cars were moved across the parking area and into the streets by the floods. It’s a terrible scene. Wind speeds reached eighty kilometers per hour. On White Street, trees became uprooted and smashed into parked cars. Worse still, on Green Street, a tree fell on a bus that was taking some students to their basketball game. Luckily, no one on the bus was hurt. It looks like the insurance companies will have to pay large sums of money to their customers. As for tomorrow, weather conditions are supposed to improve. Clear skies can be expected.

Dear editor,
With the improvement of the life standard, many families buy private cars in recent years, thus causing some social problems, most of which is the traffic jam. Many big cities are considering whether to control the number of cars. I have made an investigation on this issue.
Some people hold the view that the increase of private cars will promote the cars industry, which causes the development of the country’s economy. What’s more, cars bring convenience to people and save them a lot of time. However, it really causes many problems. For one thing, the roads are so crowded that traffic jams can be seen everywhere. For another, too many cars contribute to the more and more serious air pollution.
In my opinion, we should take measures to solve the problem. Laws should be passed to regulate the traffic. And we can also call on the pubic to ride bicycles.
Best wishes.
Yours sincerely,
Li Ping

M: Hi! Janet, you look tired. What’s wrong?
W: Oh, I have this neighbor, and his dog barks all night long. It’s driving me mad.
M: Try talking to him.
W: Yeah, I guess I could. He’s kind of unfriendly, though. What are your neighbors like?
M: They’re OK, except for two of them. One is in the flat below mine. He is a smoker and the smoke comes right into my bedroom. Ugh! It’s terrible. And whenever I talk to him about it, he’s really rude.
W: Well, if I were you, I’d move. What about the other neighbor you don’t like?
M: The other guy has these wild parties at night, like four or five times a week.
W: Well, you know what I’d do if I were you?
M: What?
W: I’d go and join the party!

W: Bill, what do you think about your exam results?
M: They aren’t too bad, right? I passed all my courses. I think I did my best, Mom.
W: Really? I think you could have done much better if you spent less time in front of the television.
M: I know what you mean, Mom, but the problem is that I simply can’t remember so much information.
W: You ought to spend more time reviewing your lessons before the exams.
M: That’s boring and tiring. I don’t think watching TV had any effect on my results …
W: All right, then what did?
M: I wish I knew … perhaps I’m just not that smart.
W: Oh, Bill, you are as smart as everyone else. You just don’t understand how important it is to study. Starting today, you must spend at least one hour studying every night. Don’t watch TV for more than half an hour.
M: Oh, no, how boring!

Welcome to Fantastic Homes of the Rich and Famous! In this program we will explore the beautiful homes of famous people from all around the world. Today, we are looking at the home of the late Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson’s home is called Neverland Ranch. It is a home like no other. It has all the things that every star’s home should have: a six-car garage, a huge basketball court, and a golf course. It is also a home to twenty-seven different types of animals, and there is a large roller coaster and tens of other rides and games. Jackson believed that his home should be a place for kids to have fun and relax. There are also many great places for adults, including a huge ballroom, a space for music and art, and a large theater. Jackson’s home was mainly a place for him to escape from his fame and relax by himself and with friends. He wanted to build his own private world to enjoy and he certainly managed to do that. After all, Michael Jackson was the King of Pop, and he deserved to live in a nice place.
