Four MustSee Route 66(66号公路) Attractions
The United States is full of odd roadside attractions.Route 66 is home to some of the oldest and most known attractions of them all. Here are four attractions you should see along the Mother Road:
1.Paul Bunyan and a Hot Dog
Route 66 travelers pass by many fiberglass giants(巨人) right along the road. These giants were a popular form of advertising in the 1960s.Many of them stood in front of service stations. They held car parts, such as mufflers. The collection of Route 66 giants became known as “Muffler Men”.Businesses hoped the strange statues would get travelers’ attention.
The first fiberglass giant was a “Paul Bunyan” figure, built in the early 1960s.It’s said that Paul Bunyan is a famous wood worker.
2.Crown Candy Kitchen and Jamaica Ray
Crown Candy Kitchen has been serving Route 66 travelers from the very beginning. It is just a few short blocks from the 66 path through St. Louis,Missouri. The familyrun soda fountain shop opened more than 100 years ago,and has been making candies and meals ever since.
On weekends, people sometimes wait in line for a table at Crown Candy for over an hour.Luckily there is free entertainment right outside.Jamaica Ray,a local folk artist, creates unusual sculptures.
3.The World’s Largest Rocking Chair
Fanning,Missouri,is home to one of the strangest Route 66 attractions.Just off the road sits an almost 13metertall rocking chair.
The structure was completed in 2008 on the first of April,or April Fool’s Day.
At one time the chair actually rocked. But officials decided it had to be still to be safe for ever.People are not permitted to climb the chair. We think, however, that it probably happens once in a while when no one is watching.
4.Big Texan’s Steak Challenge
Few places better represent the common expression “Everything’s Bigger in Texas” than the Big Texan Steak Ranch.Since 1960,it has appealed to travelers with big appetites and a big love of beef.
It is hard to miss the huge yellow restaurant or the giant cow statue that sits out front. The cow advertises Big Texan’s special deal, and what has made this steak ranch famous:a “free” 72ounce(盎司) or 2kilogram steak. There is one trick:the steak is only free if you can eat the entire thing in one hour.
A special table is in the middle of the restaurant for the daring diners who accept the challenge.Since 1990,more than 9,000 diners have eaten the entire 2kilogram steak.

When young people begin to live independently, homehunting can involve some stress. But they would do well to remember that a new alternative is available—microhomes.
Lovingly called “tiny houses”,these homes have all living necessities in a small package, including kitchen, bedroom and bathroom.Generally under 50 square meters, most tiny homes accommodate just one or two people though some claim the space for more. What’s lost in size is not lost in design as these homes are often quite unique and modern in design.
Besides an attractive appearance, tiny homes can also boast(自夸)unique practical features.Making the best of urban space, the 72 to 122centimeterwide Keret House in Warsaw, the world’s narrowest home, filled in an alley(小巷).The Ecocapsule uses solar power, wind power and rainwater collection to enable its owner to live practically anywhere.A system of rails (栏杆)allows the DALE microhome to adjust room size and number as well as adding the option of an open or enclosed courtyard.
Attractive as microhomes are, there are a few drawbacks to consider before getting cozy on a minicouch.Moving into a tiny home requires getting rid of most nonessentials,no matter what the emotional connection to them.Guests will also mostly be out of the question as a result of the limited space. And finally,a microhome is likely a temporary living option for most people since they will probably start families and acquire more possessions.
Though the limitations will scare some, there is usually a benefit.A small size results in a small price tag and small bills, making tiny homes easier to save up for a budget. And though you won’t have much stuff around the home, this can provide the comfort of simple living and maintenance.Microhomes are also practically mobile and boast ecofriendliness that can’t be matched by other homes. They probably aren’t for everyone or forever, but when it comes to your next (or first) home, they could be just what you need.

The European Union on Monday prohibited the use of Xray body scanners(扫描仪) in European airports, parting ways with the U.S.Transportation Security Administration, which has used hundreds of the scanners as a way to screen millions of airline passengers for explosives hidden under clothing.
The European Commission, which enforces common policies of the E.U.’s member countries, adopted the rule “in order not to risk doing harm to citizens’ health and safety”.
As a ProPublica/PBS NewsHour investigation detailed earlier this month,Xray body scanners use ionizing radiation(电离辐射),a form of energy that has been shown to damage DNA and cause cancer.Although the amount of radiation is extremely low, equal to the radiation a person would receive in a few minutes of flying, several research studies have concluded that a small number of cancer cases would result from scanning hundreds of millions of passengers a year.
European countries will be allowed to use an alternative body scanner relying on radio frequency waves, which have not been linked to cancer. The U.S. Transportation Security Administration(TSA) has also used hundreds of those machines—known as millimeterwave scanners—in U.S. airports. But unlike Europe,it has decided to use both types of scanners.
The TSA would not comment specifically on the E.U.’s decision. But in a statement,TSA spokesman Mike McCarthy said,“As one of our many layers of security,TSA uses the most advanced technology available to provide the best opportunity to detect dangerous items, such as explosives.”
“We strictly test our technology to ensure it meets our high detection and safety standards before it is placed in airports,” he continued.“Since January 2010,advanced imaging technology has detected more than 300 dangerous or illegal items on passengers in U.S. airports nationwide.”
Body scanners have been controversial(有争议的) in the United States since they were first used in prisons in the late 1990s and then in airports for tests after 9·11.

In 2013 alone at least 20,000 African elephants were killed for their teeth. In South Africa over the last two years more than 2,200 rhinos were killed for their horns. These numbers are alarming, because current rates of illegal hunting are faster than birth rates, which could lead to extinction for these ecologically important creatures in their environment.Indeed, some elephant and rhino populations are on track to be locally extinct within the next decade.
If you are reading this, you may already be aware of these facts. But you might not know that wildlife trafficking(走私) not only threatens the existence of elephants and rhinos but is also leading to extinction of other species, such as tigers, tortoises, sea turtles—and the world’s most trafficked mammal(哺乳动物)—pangolins.
Pangolins are the only mammals that are entirely covered in tough scales(鳞),which make them look very strong. But actually they are endangered mammals. There are eight different species of pangolins, four in Asia and four in Africa, and all are threatened with extinction.Although pangolins are protected throughout most of the countries where they live, high demand in East Asia, where the delicious pangolin meat is considered a delicacy and where their scales are used in traditional medicines,is driving an illegal trade in both live animals and pangolin parts. The number of pangolin trafficking is shocking.Experts believe that over the last 10 years more than 1 million pangolins were taken from the wild.It is estimated that between 40,000 and 81,250 pangolins were killed for the illegal trade in 2013 alone.
In February, the United States released a plan to deal with wildlife trafficking, which lays out the steps we will take to fight the illegal trade in wildlife, including pangolins. We are strengthening the carrying out of the plan;building international cooperation and contribution to protect wildlife;raising awareness to drive down the demand that is fuelling the illegal trade.
Get involved and remember World Wildlife Day(March 3) by spreading the plan.Use social media and tell everyone that now is the time to get serious about wildlife crime and end the demand that threatens species, big and small, from the huge elephant to the shy pangolin.
