Introduction of Miao Minority
The Miao ethnic group has about 9.5 million members in China. They live among related ethnic groups in south China. Guizhou Province is often referred to as the Miao homeland because almost half of the Miao in China, over 4 million people, live in the province.
The staple food is rice. Other dishes are meat and acidic soups. Vegetables, hot seasonings and home-made wine are common at the table. Rice becomes a must during festivals and celebrations.
Most houses are made out of wood with a mountain-shaped structure and greatly varying styles. The houses at the foot of the Qingshui River are the single-storey structures with three rooms in a row. One side room is used for dinner, meeting and receiving guests, while the other is for sleeping. But in the mountain areas, houses are of three stories. The ground floor is used as the kitchen, the second floor for sleeping in, and the third floor for storage.
They believe that everything in nature has a spirit, which incombination are powerful enough to control their lives. Every time there are disasters, they will invite a wizard to perform ceremonies designed to drive away the devil ghost.
The Lusheng Festival is celebrated from the 16th to the 20th day of the first lunar month (February or early March) in the Kaili area of Guizhou province. This is considered to be the most influential Miao festival because it is very popular in Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan provinces.
The festival features a lot of Miao ethnic activities such as singing, horse racing, and dancing. If you plan to visit Guizhou in March, you can experience the Lusheng Festival. Tourists like to visit their beautiful fields and learn about their stories of ethnic culture.
