Dear Susan,
I have been in England three months now. I hope you don’t think I have forgotten you. There have been so many places to see and so many things to do that I’ve not had much time for writing letters. I shall soon be starting my studies at King’s College. So far I’ve been learning about England and British ways of living. I won’t tell you about London. There are plenty of books you can read and plenty of pictures you can look at. I’m sure you’ll be more interested to know what I think about life here.
I find some of the customs new and interesting. People here do not shake hands so much as we do in Europe. During the first few weeks I was often surprised because people did not put out their hands when I met them. Men raised their hats to women but not to each other.
Yours ever,
Anne

Everyone talks about the “five” senses of man. And it is true that we get our information (信息) about the outside from our sense of sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste. Researchers tell us that the sense of sight – our visual sense –gives us up to 80% of what we know about the world outside our bodies; while the other senses, the auditory (hearing), the olfactory (smell), the tactile (touch), and the gustatory (taste) bring into our brains information about the other 20% of what is happening. But there are two other senses that we cannot get along without, though they are little noticed. These are the senses of balance (平衡), without which we would act like a drunk after a heavy drink, and the kinesthetic sense(动觉), which gives us our ideas about our own motion (运动).

I lived in a big city. It’s noisy and dirty and I got very tired. At the weekends I like to leave the city and get some fresh air and a good rest. A few weekends ago I decided to see my parents. I was really looking forward to it.
My parents live a long way away. I went to see them with James, a friend, and we drove down on Friday night. In the middle of the trip it began to rain. The roads became very wet and it was difficult to drive. We arrived home just after midnight, feeling tired. The next morning it was still raining. James took his car to the local garage which was very good.
In the afternoon the weather became better. We wanted to go for a drive. My parents lent us their car. That was no good. Their car didn’t work! We rang the garage. “Oh, no.” they said, “your car won’t be ready until tomorrow.” So it wasn’t possible to go for a drive. We decided to play a word game. When we didn’t agree about a word ,we looked for a dictionary. It wasn’t there. Suddenly my mother remembered. “I lent it to your sister. She took it with her when she left.” The word game wasn’t any good without a dictionary.
On Sunday my mother dropped a suitcase on her foot and we had to hire a taxi to take her to hospital. When James and I drove back we got stuck in a traffic jam (交通阻塞). Next time I want to have a rest. I’ll stay in the city!

Memory, they say, is a matter of practice and exercise. If you have the wish and really made a conscious(自觉的)effort, then you can quite easily improve your ability to remember things. But even if you are successful, there are times when your memory seems to play tricks on you.
Sometimes you remember things that really did not happen. One morning last week, for example, I got up and found that I had left the front door unlocked all night, yet I clearly remember locking it carefully the night before.
Memory “trick” work the other way as well. Once in a while you remember not doing something, and then find out that you did. One day last month, for example, I was sitting in a barber(理发师)shop waiting for my turn to get a haircut, and suddenly I realized that I had got a haircut two days before at the barber shop across the street from my office.
We always seem to find something funny and amusing(有趣的)in incidents caused by people’s forgetfulness or absent-mindedness. Stories about absent-minded professors have been told for years, and we never got tired of hearing new ones. Unfortunately, however, absent-mindedness is not always funny. There are times when “trick” of our memory can cause us great trouble.
