While some kids don't always like what mom or dad is cooking for dinner, they don't have to worry about where to find their next meal. Elizabeth Murray grew up with drug-addicted parents and often didn’t have warm clothes or food. “It would be common for me to go into my kitchen and see my parents shooting drugs into their veins(血管),” Elizabeth said.
When Elizabeth was 10 she found out her mother had AIDS. A few years later, while most teenage girls were worrying about what to wear, Elizabeth was looking after her moon. Her mom died at the age of 41 in 1996.
At 15, Elizabeth was homeless. Her mom was gone and her dad was on the street. After her mom’s death, she knew things had to change and she knew it was up to herself. “I connected the lifestyles that I had seen every day with how my mother ended. And if there was anything I could do about it that would not happen to me. So I went back to school. But mind you, I was homeless,” Elizabeth explained.
Her high school didn't know Elizabeth was homeless. She took an extra load of work, studied on the stairs and made excellent grades. When she read about a scholarship offered by The New York Times she quickly applied and won. She would receive $ 12,000 for every year at college. Elizabeth was determined to go to Harvard and the university didn't turn her down. Right now Elizabeth lives with her little sister in New York while she waits to become a full-time student. According to a recent report by the research organization NPD Group, Americans are cutting down on sugary foods and drinks, Today, on average, kids are eating and drinking sugary sweets 126 times less than they did in1998.
Since March l, 1980, the NPD Group has been surveying families across the United States about how they eat. The study includes 5,000 people from 2,000 families. Families taking part in the survey keep a journal of their daily diets for two weeks. Each individual records how many sweets and sugary treats he or she consumes.
The study shows that a large percentage of Americans still satisfy their sweet tooth, but in smaller amounts. Nearly 98% of the adults and children surveyed still have at least one sweet, but only every two weeks. “It’s not a question of whether or not you’re going to have a sweet,” said Balzer. “It’s a matter of how frequently you’re going to have a sweet”. While there is no formal definition for what classifies a “sweet”, NPD selected 20 products to conduct the study. The list ranges from cookies and brownies to fruit juice and yogurt. Kids today are eating cookies 8 times less than they did in 1998, and drinking fruit juice 16 times less.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the percentage of obese kids aged 6 to 19 tripled (使增至三倍) in the U.S. between 1980 and 2000, About 9 million children were overweight. Today, obesity rates are not falling, but they aren’t growing ,either, “There are three points to every trend,” said Balzer. “There’s the movement upward, the leveling off ,and the decline. Right now we’re at the leveling off point”
Schools nationwide are doing their part to put childhood obesity on a downward trend, Fried food has disappeared from many cafeteria menus, Whole-wheat bread has replaced white bread , Water and low-fat milk have replaced sugary drinks and soda. Seated in a convertible (折蓬汽车), Mary looked at the flies that sat on top of Mark's
hair. How could they stay there? She wondered.
Mary had not seen Mark in years, until the other day when he came into the café where she worked. His appearance was different from when he was in senior high school. Now, he was a bit fat and thick glasses covered his eyes. However, that didn't change Mary's feelings for him at all. He had just bought a brand-new red sports car and asked her if she would like to go for a ride and then have dinner with him. Her heart beat with excitement as he opened the door for her. She noticed something very strange as Mark got into the car and started to drive away. On the hair was a group of flies just sitting there.
Mary stared in amazement. It seemed the faster they drove, the more determined the flies were to stick to his hair.
Mary remained silent. She leaned forward and turned the radio on, to try to divert her
attention away from the flies, but she couldn’t help thinking about them. She looked up at
Mark, who was completely devoted to what was going on and continued to sing along to the music while driving merrily along.
Finally, Mark pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road beside a diner and looked in the mirror and said, "Mary, I would like to comb my hair before we get something to eat. Could you reach under the seat and give me my hair cream?"
Mary reached under the seat and pulled out a camping backpack, which contained a round jar and started to laugh wildly as she pointed to the label.
