Watch out for whoever uses the truth to deceive. Whenever someone tells you something that is 1 , but leaves out important information,by design more or less, that should be 2 , he can create a false impression.
For instance, someone might say, “I just 3 a hundred dollars on the lottery. It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to where i bought it and 4 it in for one hundred dollars!”
This fellow is a real winner, 5 ? Maybe, or maybe not. We then find our he bought two hundred 6 , and only one was a winner. He’s actually a big 7 !
He said nothing that was 8 , but he deliberately left out some important 9 . That’s called a half-truth. Half-truths may not be technically 10 , but they are just as not 11 .
Undependable candidates in 12 campaigns often use this trick. Let’s say that during Governor Blacksmith’s last term, the state lost one million jobs and 13 three million. Then he 14 another term. One of his opponents runs an ad 15 , “During Governor Blacksmith’s term, the state lost one million jobs!” It’s true. 16 , an honest statement would have been, “During Governor Blacksmith’s term, the state had a net gain of 17 million jobs. ”
Advertisers will sometimes use half-truths. It’s 18 the law to make false claims so they try to mislead you with the 19 . An advertisement might boast, “Nine out of ten doctors recommend Yucky Pills to cure nose pimples. ”It 20 to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Corporation.
Deception of this kind happens often enough. It’s a sad fact in our life: Lies are lies, and the truth can lie as well from time to time.
