Conversation 1
W: Hey! Break it up. You’re both in big trouble now.
M: But it’s not my fault. He started it.
W: I don’t care who started it. You both have detention.
Conversation 2
W: What do you think of that net bar?
M: I think it’s good, because I can watch a lot of movies there.
W: Which movie would you recommend I watch? I’m on my way to that place.
M: “The Trueman Show” starring Jim Carrey. It’s really a classic.
Conversation 3
M: What did you do yesterday, Joan?
W: I took my dad to a really fancy restaurant for lunch.
M: I bet he liked that, Joan. You are very thoughtful.
W: Well, he is my dad after all. He really helped me when I was growing up.
M: I took my father out to play golf.
W: That sounds nice. Did you let him win?
M: Of course! It was Father’s day!
Conversation 4
W: Lester, you are really fantastic at automobile repair.
M: Thanks, June. But I think I need to be certified as a mechanic before I’m allowed to repair cars for a living.
W: That’s not a big problem. There are many small schools for adults like you who can study to be certified.
M: I guess I never thought of that before.
W: And you can easily get a student loan from a vocational school, or from the government.
M: Wow, you’ve inspired me to do something!
Conversation 5
M: If you could be any animal, what would you choose?
W: Do you mean what is my favorite animal?
M: No. If you could live as an animal, which one would you choose?
W: I would be a fish because I love to swim.
M: I would be a horse.
W: Why would you choose to be a horse?
M: So I could go in races and win buckets of money.
W: But you would be a horse-how would you be able to enjoy or spend the money you won?
M: Hmmm. I hadn’t thought of that.
Conversation 6
W: Gordon, how’s business?
M: Same old, same old. How can I help you, Alisa?
W: You are a clerk at this store, right?
M: You are correct, how can I assist you?
W: I need a book that will teach me how to speak fluent English.
M: Do you like speaking English?
W: Yes, but English is hard.
M: Here is a good textbook.
W: Thanks a bunch. I owe you one.
M: You’re welcome. Can I offer you a better way to study English?
W: Of course! I would love that. How can I master English quickly?
M: You should find a foreign boyfriend, like me. So every time when we are together, it will be like English class.
W: In your dreams! I mean, thanks, but no, thanks, sir. I don’t owe you one. I don’t appreciate it.
M: I was just kidding. I was making a joke. The best way to learn is to log on to and sign up for the cool English materials there. Don’t forget to practice everyday.
W: Now this is good advice. I appreciate it, thanks a million. You’re the best, I will never forget this.
M: You’re welcome, anything for you.
Section B
W: “We have 10 year olds all the way up to 50 year olds. Women, men all nationalities, sometimes we have had students that can’t speak English but there is the music that brings them together,” said long time DJ Chris Stiles, who co-founded the Beat Refinery in 2010. It is the only DJ school in the Washington area.
“We felt that there was a need to have the school because today’s world you see a lot of different places where people us DJs whether it is at weddings or at bars, clubs, or clothing stores. The profession of DJ has become a very sought after job,” Stiles said.
The school offers classes for those wanting to become professionals as well as those who just want to mix party music for friends. The two-year program leads to certification and helps with job placement.
“We have had about six hundred students in the last three years,” Stiles said.
“There are a lot of DJs that make, especially at the world stage, at the big, big stage DJs can make a few million dollars a year on that top side. And then a DJ that works very hard locally can make six figures for sure,” Stiles said
