第三部分:阅读理解(共两节,40分)
A
My oldest daughter Kate is 11 years old and in her first year in middle school. She continues to be an excellent student. One afternoon, she came home and asked if I thought she was a goody-goody. I asked her why she felt that way. She responded that some children in her class remarked that she was a goody-goody, because she always got good grades and asked questions in class.
I explained that this happens quite frequently in school. Because some children may feel unsafe, they may laugh at and make jokes about students who are willing to learn. I advised her to use this opportunity to challenge herself and to tell her classmates that she is not trying to be the teacher’s pet, and that she simply enjoys learning new things because learning is fun.
I also suggested that she should try talking to those students who sometimes make fun of her, and ask if they needed help with a particular subject, and offer her assistance like a tutor (家庭教师). This turned out to be a great way. I tried to show her how to turn a negative situation into a positive one. I reminded her of the importance of always being her own person, and not letting what others say change her opinion of herself.
At such a young age, my daughter has already set goals to attend college and has had different ideas about what careers she may wish to pursue. Although she still experiences difficulties at times, my daughter keeps in good spirits. She now knows not to let teasing discourage her!

Plastics are considered one of the most serious pollutants causing environmental problems. The garbage containing plastics end up in waterways that eventually flow into the oceans. Accumulation of plastic in the ocean endangers marine life and pollutes the water.
Does Plastic Continent exist? Yes, plastic continent does exist and was discovered by Captain Charles Moore a decade ago. Plastic continent is twice the size of Britain and it is the region that lies between the Hawaii Islands and California in the central Pacific Ocean.
One of the causes for the lack of marine life in this region is due to pollution and the pollutant is no other than the plastics. Captain Charles Moor believes plastic wastes started accumulating in the 1950s.
Plastic Continent is the man made continent of floating plastic wastes. The sailors and the fishermen have avoided this region for years. The reasons are
● There are no fishes here because of the lack of nutrients
● The zone also lacks the wind that is essential for sailing.
To research on the ocean pollution, Captain Moore founded Algalita Marine Research Foundation. Other organizations such as Greenpeace supported his cause. The reports of The United Nations Environment Program show that millions of seabirds and marine mammals are dying to due the invasion of plastics. The waste plastics that are believed to be recycled are in fact being thrown into the oceans. The marine animals mistake these for food particles and nibble them. This leads to their death that affects the marine food chain.
