1 Gifts from the heart According to legend, a young man while roaming the desert came across a spring of delicious crystal-clear water. The water was so sweet, he filled his leather canteen so he could bring some back to a tribal elder who had been his teacher. After a four-day journey he presented the water to the old man who took a deep drink, smiled warmly and thanked his student lavishly for the sweet water. The young man returned to his village with a happy heart. Later, the teacher let another student taste the water. He spat it out, saying it was awful. It apparently had become stale because of the old leather container. The student challenged his teacher: "Master, the water was foul. Why did you pretend to like it?" The teacher replied, "You only tasted the water. I tasted the gift. The water was simply the container for an act of loving-kindness and nothing could be sweeter." I think we understand this lesson best when we receive innocent gifts of love from young children. Whether it's a ceramic tray or a macaroni bracelet, the natural and proper response is appreciation and expressed thankfulness because we love the idea within the gift. Gratitude doesn't always come naturally. Unfortunately, most children and many adults value only the thing given rather than the feeling embodied in it. We should remind ourselves and teach our children about the beauty and purity of feelings and expressions of gratitude. After all, gifts from the heart are really gifts of the heart. roam 漫游,闲逛 lavishly 浪费的 stale 陈腐的;不新鲜的 foul 污秽的,邪恶的 ceramic 陶瓷的 canteen 餐厅;水壶 2 Think Positive Thoughts Every Day积极看待每一天 If your life feels like it is lacking the power that you want and the motivation that you need, sometimes all you have to do is shift your point of view如果你觉得心有余力不足,觉得缺乏前进的动力,有时候你只需要改变思维的角度。 Welcome to Faith Radio Online-Simply to Relax, I'm Faith. By training your thoughts to concentrate on the bright side of things, you are more likely to have the incentive to follow through on your goals. You are less likely to be held back by negative ideas that might limit your performance. Your life can be enhanced, and your happiness enriched, when you choose to change your perspective. Don't leave your future to chance, or wait for things to get better mysteriously on their own. You must go in the direction of your hopes and aspirations. Begin to build your confidence, and work through problems rather than avoid them. Remember that power is not necessarily control over situations, but the ability to deal with whatever comes your way. Always believe that good things are possible, and remember that mistakes can be lessons that lead to discoveries. Take your fear and transform it into trust; learn to rise above anxiety and doubt. Turn your “worry hours” into “productive hours”. Take the energy that you have wasted and direct it toward every worthwhile effort that you can be involved in. This is Faith at Faith Radio Online-Simply to Relax. You will see beautiful things happen when you allow yourself to experience the joys of life. You will find happiness when you adopt positive thinking into your daily routine and make it an important part of your world. shift 3 The story of life Sometimes people come into your life and you know right away that they were meant to be there , to serve some sort of purpose, teach you a lesson, or to help you figure out who you are or who you want to become. You never know who these people maybe (possibly your roommate , neighbor , coworker , long lost friend , lover , or even a complete stranger),but when you lock eyes with them, you know at that very moment they will affect your life in some profound way . And sometimes things happen to you that may seem horrible , painful. and unfair at first , but in reflection you find that without overcoming those obstacles you would have never realized your potential , strength , willpower , or heart. Everything happens for a reason. Nothing happens by chance or by means of good luck. Illness , injury, love, lost moments of true greatness and sheer stupidity all occur to test the limits of your soul. Without these small tests whatever they may be, life would be like a smoothly paved, straight, flat road to nowhere. It would be safe and comfortable, but dull and utterly pointless. The people you meet who affect your life, and the success and downfalls you experience , help to create who you are and who you become. Even the bad experiences can be learned from. In fact, they are probably the most poignant and important ones. If someone hurts you, betrays you, or breaks your heart, forgive them, for they have helped you learn about trust and the importance of being cautious when you open your heart. If someone loves you, love them back unconditionally, not only because they love you, but because in a way, they are teaching you to love and how to open your heart and eyes to things. Make every day count. Appreciate every moment and take from those moments everything that you possibly can for you may never be able to experience it again. Talk to people that you have never talked to before, and actually listen. Let yourself fall in love, break free, and set your sights high. Hold your head up because you have every right to. Tell yourself you are a great individual and believe in yourself, for if you don’t believe in yourself, it will be hard for others to believe in you. You can make of your life anything you wish. Create your own life and then go out and live it with absolutely no regrets. Most importantly, if you LOVE someone, tell him or her, for you never know what tomorrow may have in store. And learn a lesson in life each day that you live. That`s the story of life. coworker 4 I remember I remember, I remember the house where I was born, the little window where the sun came peeping in at morn; he never came a wink too soon nor brought too long a day; but now, I often wish the night had borne my breath away. I remember, I remember the roses red and white, the violets and the lily-cups— those flowers made of light! The lilacs where the robin built, and where my brother set The laburnum on his birthday — the tree is living yet! I remember, I remember where I used to swing, and thought the air must rush as fresh to swallows on the wing; my spirit flew in feathers then that is so heavy now, and summer pools could hardly cool the fever on my brow. I remember, I remember the fir trees dark and high; I used to think their slender tops were close against the sky: it was a childish ignorance, but now this little joy to know I’m farther off from heaven than when I was a boy. peeping 5 If I Rest, I Rust如果我休息,我就会生锈 The significant inscription found on an old key—“If I rest, I rust”---would be an excellent motto for those who are afflicted with the slightest bit of idleness. Even the most industrious person might adopt it with advantage to serve as a reminder that, if one allows his faculties to rest, like the iron in the unused key, they will soon show signs of rust and, ultimately, cannot do the work required of them在一把旧钥匙上发现了一则意义深远的铭文——如果我休息,我就会生锈。 Those who would attain the heights reached and kept by great men must keep their faculties polished by constant use, so that they may unlock the doors of knowledge, the gate that guard the entrances to the professions, to science, art, literature, agriculture---every department of human endeavor. Industry keeps bright the key that opens the treasury of achievement. If Hugh Miller, after toiling all day in a quarry, had devoted his evenings to rest and recreation, he would never have become a famous geologist. The celebrated mathematician, Edmund Stone, would never have published a mathematical dictionary, never have found the key to science of mathematics, if he had given his spare moments to idleness, had the little Scotch lad, Ferguson, allowed the busy brain to go to sleep while he tended sheep on the hillside instead of calculating the position of the stars by a string of beads, he would never have become a famous astronomer. Labor vanquishes all---not inconstant, spasmodic, or ill-directed labor; but faithful, unremitting, daily effort toward a well-directed purpose. Just as truly as eternal vigilance is the price of liberty, so is eternal industry the price of noble and enduring success. inscription题词,铭文 rust 生锈 afflicted 折磨 industrious 勤勉的 faculties才能,能力 endeavor努力,尽力 toiling 辛苦,苦工 quarry 采石场 idleness懒散,闲散 vanquishes征服, 击败 inconstant变化无常的 spasmodic 痉挛的,间歇的 unremitting 不懈的 eternal 永远的 industry 勤勉 enduring 持久的;忍耐的 Vigilance 警戒 6 I'll paint you a rainbow I'll paint you a rainbow to hang on the wall, To brighten your heart when the gray shadows fall. On a canvas of joy outlasting the years, With a soft brush of sweetness to dry all your tears. I'll paint you a rainbow with colors of smiles That glow with sincerity over the miles. On a palette of words I will tenderly blend Tones into treasures of sunlight and wind. I'll paint you a rainbow that reaches so wide, Your sighs and your sorrows will vanish inside, And deep in the center of each different hue, A memory fashioned especially for you. So lift up your eyes, for suspended above, A rainbow designed by the fingers of love... Looking into the sunset I can't help but notice that despite her beauty, a sense of struggle and hopeless surround the sky . Deep inside you realize that this day is gone, and everything that It had brought is lost forever. Every thought, every action, every dream, every hope, every sight, every sound is gone. There is no chance of every being returned the same, exactly the same. It is all around, if you just look for it. Give love, for in giving it you will find the power in life along with the joy, happiness, patience, and understanding. Believe in the goodness of others and remember that anger and depression can be countered by love and hope. Even when you feel as though there isn't a lot you can do to change unhappiness or problems, you can always do a little--and a little at a time eventually makes a big difference. situation 情形 humankind 人类 goodness 善良 9 How to stay young Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctor worry about them. That's why you pay him/her. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. "An idle mind is the devil's workshop. And the devil's name is Alzheimer's."
