Do you like to listen to music when you feel sad? Do you like to sing songs in the shower? Music is everywhere. But in many countries, music classes in schools are left in the basket.
These days, because of the bad economy (经济) in the US, some schools fired (解雇) arts teachers including (包括) music teachers. Some students don’t have the chance to learn music. The haze（霾）season is back. How much do you know about haze? Haze can also be called “smog”. The word “smog” is from the words “smoke” and “fog”. It first appeared in the early 20th century. It is a kind of air pollution(污染）caused（导致）mostly by cars and factories.

In December, students in Beijing had several days of special “holidays”. Kindergarten, primary and middle school students studied at home using the Internet because classes were stopped because of the smog(雾霾).
It’s one of the decisions the government made during the days under the red alert（红色警报）for heavy air pollution. China set a four-tier smog alert system in 2013, and on Dec.8, Beijing sent out its first red alert. During the next few weeks, blue, yellow and orange alerts came several times.
During the days under the red alert, the PM2.5 level in Beijing was always around 300. In north-eastern China, things were even worse. The PM2.5 level reached over 1,000 in Shenyang on Nov.8.
Actions were taken to deal with the smog. The Beijing government set limits（限制）on car use and cut some factory hours. They also advised people to stay indoors.
