Robbie looked out of the window. It was still snowing heavily and there was ice on the window. It was another cold day. Robbie was told to turn the heat on before the family got home. And he did it.
Then Robbie was told to do some cleaning work at once. It was an easy job for him, but a tough one for his master, Helen. He kept on working until every room was clean and tidy.
For now, he had to cook supper for the family.
The first thing Robbie did was to get the big pot(锅) in the kitchen. Then he put some water in the pot and put it on the stove. He used one of his hands to cut up a chicken and added the pieces to the water to make a good soup. Then he got some tomatoes, cabbages and carrots to make a vegetable salad.
At ten past eight he laid the table. Then he put some bread, the chicken soup and the salad on it. What a sweet smell! The moment he turned on the lights, the whole family came home.

Every year on my birthday, from the time I turned 12, a white gardenia (栀子花) was sent to my house. No card came with it. Calls to the flower shops were not helpful at all. After a while I stopped trying to discover the sender’s name and was just very pleased with the beautiful white flower in soft pink paper.
But I never stopped imagining who the giver might be. Some of my happiest moments were spent daydreaming about the sender. My mother encouraged this imagining. She’d ask me if there was someone for whom I had done a special kindness. Perhaps it was the old man who I looked after when he was ill. As a girl, I had more fun imagining that it might be a boy.
One month before my graduation, my father died. I felt very sad and didn’t want to go to the coming graduation dance at all. And I didn’t care whether I had a new dress or not. But my mother, in her own sadness, would not let me miss any of those things. She wanted he children to feel loved and lovable. In truth, my mother wanted her children to see themselves much like the gardenia—lovely, strong and perfect with perhaps a bit of mystery.

During a football game, having a good goalkeeper (守门员) is very important. A new study has found that what the goalkeeper wears is also important.
The study has found that when a goalkeeper is wearing red, the football player has fewer chances of making a goal(进球).
The color red makes the football player nervous and it could make him play worse, according to the sports experts.
Researchers at the University Chichaster, UK watched how football players played in a test.
They asked 40 university football player to take shots(射门) against the same goalkeeper. Each football player took 10 shots against a goalkeeper, wearing either a blue, yellow, green or red shirt.
On average(平均), the player got seven and a half goals when the goalkeeper was wearing a blue, yellow or green shirt. But only five goals went in when the goalkeeper wore red.
The researchers believed that the color red may have an influence on the football players.
“People say red stands for danger or anger,” said Ian Greenlees, one of the researchers. “Red is a color of blood, which we don't often see until something bad happens. Red is usually used in traffic lights and other places to tell people that there is danger.”

I learned about life from an ant farm. When I was seven years old, my family created one. First, we put clean sand in a thin glass box and put the ants into it. Soon they got to work making tunnels. I was amazed that each one knew exactly what to do. With my mom’s help, I kept a record of what happened each day and named the ants.
One day when I had put my face close to the structure (building), accidentally I knocked it over, and all the tunnels fell in. Although the ants survived their earthquake, one by one they began to die. I was frightened as I watched them give up their tunnel-building to carry the bodies to a corner of the farm. My mother reported that the ants were dying of “frustration (挫折)”. They simply could not stand the reality that their tunnels had been destroyed.
Although much time has passed, I still think of that ant farm. Over the years, I came to realize the ants have the spirit of teamwork. Working together, they were able to create an amazing world for themselves. I also learned that they should be admired for their hard work. Day in and day out, each worked at their task. The ant farm showed that teamwork and perseverance (毅力) are indeed the keys to success. But there was an even larger lesson that I did not realize until recently —Adversity (逆境) is a natural part of life, and must be accepted. Unlike the ants, humans cannot give up when they face disappointment.
So I try to live my life like those hardworking ants. But, unlike them, I try not to let frustration defeat (击败) me. I will have to keep building my tunnels.

A. for the ants to live in B. to get sunlight in

B. The ants give up when they face frustration.
C. The ants should be admired for their hard work.

( )44. What’s the writer’s purpose of writing the passage?
A. To share a personal experience.
B. To tell readers a story about ants.
C. To warn readers not to build an ant farm.
D. To call on readers to learn from the ants.
( )45. What did the writer think of the ants?
A. Persistent (执着) and friendly.

C. Clumsy (愚笨的) and lazy.
D. Hard-working but pessimistic
