Sometimes it is a hot topic discussed by people. The greatest thing that gene technology can do is to cure serious diseases that doctors at present can almost do nothing with, such as cancer and heart disease. Every year, millions of people are murdered by these two killers. And to date, doctors have not found an effective way to cure them. But if the gene technology is applied, not only these two diseases can be cured completely, bringing happiness and more living days to the patients, but also the great amount of money people spend on curing their diseases can be saved, therefore it benefits the economy as well. In addition, human life span (寿命) can be prolonged. Gene technology can help people to give birth to more healthy and clever children. Some families, with the English imperial family being a good example, have hereditary diseases. This means their children will for sure have the family disease, which is a great trouble for these families. In the past, doctors could do nothing about hereditary diseases. But gene technology can solve this problem perfectly. The scientist just need to find the wrong gene and correct it, and a healthy child will be born. Some people are worrying that the gene research can be used to manufacture human beings in large quantities. In the past few years, scientists have succeeded in cloning a sheep, therefore these people predict that human babies would soon be cloned. But I believe cloned babies will not come out in large quantities, for most couples in the world can have babies in very normal way. Of course, the governments must take care to control gene technology. 41. What does “these two killers” in the second paragraph refer to? A. gene technology and another treatment of the two diseases. B. The two murderers who killed the cloned baby C. The two diseases of cancer and heart disease D. Hereditary diseases and cancer 42. What’s the main idea of the third paragraph? A. How gene technology can be applied in the field of treating hereditary diseases. B. Gene technology can be used to clone human babies. C. Gene technology can help people to give birth of a baby. D. Gene technology can help the English imperial family out. 43. In what way gene technology can help to treat hereditary diseases? A. Using gene technology, people with hereditary diseases can have more living days. B. Using gene technology, scientist finds the wrong gene and corrects it. C. Using gene technology, human babies can be cloned. D. Doctors can cure cancer and heart disease with the help of gene technology. 44. What is the main purpose of writing this passage? A. Expressing the writer’s idea that gene technology will benefit people B. Telling people the advantages of gene technology C. Telling the readers that gene technology will not benefit people D. Explaining that gene technology will also do harm to the humanity B Read a whole book in English? Me? Yes, you. Believe it or not that may be easier than you think. Not all classics are too difficult or complicated. So you’re not limited to simplified versions (简写本). And the easier books are not for young children. Books in their original versions (原著) may send you to the dictionary. And you might not understand everything you read. But reading one from cover to cover will give you a real sense of accomplishment. The key is to find the right books. Let’s take a look at these. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (C.S. Lewis) Stepping into an old wardrobe, four English schoolchildren find themselves in the magical world of Narnia. In this delightful land, they find friends among the many talking creatures. The children soon discover, however, that Narnia is ruled by the White Witch. Edmund, one of the children, falls under her power. Who can free Narnia? Only Aslan, the great and noble lion. He alone knows the Deeper Magic. But the children themselves must help fight the battle against the White Witch and those who save her. The Old Man and the Sea (Ernest Hemingway) Santiago, an old Cuban fisherman, hasn’t caught any fish in more than 80 days. Sailing far out from land, the old man hooks an enormous fish. That begins an agonizing three-day battle. First he struggles against the great fish. Then he must fight off the sharks that circle the little boat and threaten to eat his fish. Exhausted and bleeding, the old man arrives back at shore. But his fish, his beautiful fish… Hemingway won the Pulitzer Prize for this superb story of strength and courage, of victory and regret. A Wrinkle in Time (Madeleine Lingle) Meg’s father, a US government scientist, has been missing for many months. He had been experimenting with time travel when he mysteriously disappeared. Now Meg, her little brother Charles Wallace and her friend Calvin will try to rescue him. But first they must outwit the forces of evil they encounter on their journey through time and space. Can they find Meg’s father before it is too late? This novel is more than just a science-fiction adventure. It’s an exploration of the nature of our universe. The Pearl (John Steinbeck) One day Kino, a poor Mexican pearl diver, finds a magnificent pearl. With it he dreams of buying a better life, new clothes and schooling for his son. Instead it brings only evil. His wife pleads with him to get rid of it. “No,” says Kino. “I will have my chance. I am a man.” But when he kills a man who is trying to steal the pearl, Kino and his wife must run for their lives. This tale of dreams, justice and the power of greed is told simply and beautifully. The Long Winter (Laura Ingalls Wilder) It’s winter, 1880-8-1, on American’s northern prairies. Mr. and Mrs. Ingalls and their four girls stay near the kitchen stove to keep warm. Heavy snowstorms cut them off even from neighbors. With the trains stopped, no supplies can reach the town. Food and fuels are running out. Day after day the girls must grind wheat for bread and twist hay to burn. At times they nearly lose the battle to keep their spirits up. This story provides a fascinating glimpse into the lives of early American settlers. 45. In this passage, the author intends to ________. A. recommend a few simplified versions of classics B. recommend a few original versions of classics C. tell us how to read an English book from beginning to end D. tell us how to find proper English books to read 46. The underlined word “outwit” in the passage probably means _________. A. get rid of B. seize control of C. beat by being cleverer D. make the most of 47. A Wrinkle in Time is different from other books mentioned in the passage in that _______. A. it is not a science-fiction B. it tells a true story of adventure C. it provides some scientific knowledge D. it tells the battle between justice and evil C Sir, Last Saturday I watched the TV coverage (news report) of the latest Grand Prix motor race and could not fail to notice how much advertising there was. In particular, the leading car (and the one that eventually won) was almost constantly on the screen; it was painted to look like a packet of well-known cigarettes. Not only that, but the car was, on more than one occasion, referred to by the commentator (评论员) not by the name of the driver or the motor company, but by the name of the product. However, the football team that I support is not allowed to wear shirts advertising anything when their matches are being televised. The rule preventing sportsmen and sportswomen from carrying advertisements on television is a good one. Keep it and do it. To take one example, what is the effect, I wonder, on the young and old, of the apparent connection between cigarette smoking and an exciting sport like motor-racing? L. H. Gray, London Sir, What a ridiculous situation our television companies find themselves in with regard to sport and advertising! I watched a televised football match in which the players did not carry any advertisements on their shirts, and yet there was advertising all around the ground. (Do the TV producers think we viewers are blind or something?) And when a well-known international player was interviewed after the match, both he and the interviewer referred by name to the make-ups firm! And as if that were not enough, the sports item that followed was the National Bank Golf Tournament. Advertising is all around us every day. Long live advertising, I say, and let the television companies recognize it and allow football players, athletes, racing drivers and others to wear sponsors’ (赞助公司) advertisements. At least we would all know where we were! Mrs. R. P. Laing, Bristol 48. L. H. Gray would like to see ______. A. advertising officially forbidden from televised sport B. cigarette advertisements made illegal C. football teams wear shirts advertising certain products D. the law forbidding commercials will come into effect soon 49. Mrs. Laing believes that ______. A. sportsmen should be allowed to carry advertising on TV B. advertising cigarettes should be officially forbidden at football matches C. advertising on television should be forbidden D. golf tournaments should not be sponsored by banks 50. Both Gray and Laing agree that ______. A. sportsmen should be allowed to
