Enjoy reading, enjoy your life!
Hello, ladies and gentlemen, it is my great honor to stand here. My topic is “Enjoy reading, enjoy your life.”
Francis Bacon, a famous writer, once said, “Reading makes a full man.” There is no doubt that reading plays a very important role in our life. However, the power of reading has been ignored by many people in China. According to a survey conducted in 2014, the Chinese per-capita time spent on reading was less than 14 minutes a day, while the per-capita time spent on playing cell phones and tablets reached more than one hour before the bedtime. How shocking the figure is! Is reading too difficult for people to do? Is reading less interesting than playing cell phones and tablets? Is reading so worthless that it isn’t worth it? The answers are “No!”
Here I want to share my experience of reading to prove how worthwhile reading is. In fact, it has changed my life and has a great effect on my work and family.
I was born in a remote mountainous area in Guangxi. Both of my parents are farmers. When I was little, my mother told me, “If you want to walk out of the mountains and see the outside world, you should study hard and read more books.” What my mother said was simple and very easy for me to understand. I knew if I want to change my life, I had to work really hard. So I listened very carefully in class and read as much as possible after class. My efforts finally paid off. I was accepted by the best senior high school in our city. Although it was stressful to study in this school, I got a lot of pleasure from reading, which not only enlarged my knowledge, but also reinforced my determination to overcome the pressure and pursue my dream. Finally, I made it. I got the chance to study in a university, in which there is a very large library with a lot of books. I loved there very much. I spent most of my spare time there reading all kinds of books. Reading made my spirit full-filled.
After I graduated, I became a teacher. I always tell my students to cultivate a habit of reading. I like introducing some books to them and I also encourage my students to share their books and reading experience. Once I made a survey of my students’ after-class reading. To my delight, all of them read what I had introduced to them and most of them have formed the habit of reading a book one month.
Now I got married and have a cute baby. I was lucky. When I was pregnant, I read stories or poems to my baby every morning and night. When I read to her, she was moving fast. At that moment, I believed my baby was also enjoying my reading. After she was born, I keep reading stories to her. And I was surprisingly found that she could speak more words than the other babies. Now she is only one year and ten months old. But she can talk with us freely and she can even sing songs and read simple poems like “Goose”. I am so excited. I hope my baby will keep on reading and enjoy reading as she grows up.
All in all, I love reading, and I benefit a lot from it. Once you have cultivated the habit of reading, you will find how attractive and worthwhile it is.
