1. Introduction
1.1. A brief introduction of Mark Twain
Mark Twain was a great writer in end of 19th century. His genuine and indulgence brought him high reputation among the Americans and even the world. He is regarded as one of the three true American writers by many scholars because his works truly reflect the typical American people’s life; the characters and their spirit have become a symbol of an independent nation. William Dean Howells praised Twain as ‘the Lincoln of American literature.”(Mark Dawidziad, 1996: 6) H.L.Mencken regarded him as the true father of American national literature, the first genuinely American artist with royal blood. (Mark Dawidziad, 1996: 6) William Faulkner said, “Mark Twain was the first true American writer, and all of us since are his heirs, we descended from him.”(Chang Yaoxin, 1997: 191) Bernard Devoto, literary critic and Twain scholar, agreed, “he (Mark Twain) wrote books that have in them something eternally true to the core of his nation’s life”. (Bernard Devoto, 1932: 3) He called Mark Twain the greatest of all American writers, not just of western American writer. Mark Twain, pseudonym of Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was brought up in the small town of Hannibal, Missouri, on the Mississippi River, which was the setback of his most novels. He was twelve when his father died and he had to leave school and educated himself. In order to make his own living, Mark Twain successively worked as a printer's devil, a tramp printer, a silver miner, a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River, and a frontier journalist in Nevada and California. Colorful life experiences provided him plenty materials for his writing later. On May 1st, in 1852, his first work, "The Dandy Frightening the Squatter" appeared in The Carpet Bag, a weekly humor magazine in Boston. Since then, he wrote his way up into the ranks of great American writers. His boy book the Adventures of Tom Sawyer "lays claim to being America's most popular. And later its sister novel the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was regarded as the masterpiece of Mark Twain.
In the studies on Mark Twain either from China or abroad, lots of critics have commented them them from different angles . This paper will draw on the results of their research in the analysis of the similarities and differences of the two novels , also , this thesis refers to their research methods . In the first part , the paper introduces the author --Mark Twain and the writing background of the two books .in the second part , it analyze the similarities of the two novels . On the second part , it analyze the similarities of the two novels . On the aspects of the arrangement of plot structure and the writing style . In the third part , the paper analyze the growing and maturing of the two books on the aspects of arrangement of the plot structure , the background of description , the characterization and the themes . Last but not least , on the basis of the above argument , the paper expresses the growth and maturity under Twain's hand into great works of immeasurable richness and complexity , which are considered an incomparable adventure story and a classic of American humor .
1.2. A brief introduction of The adventures of Tom sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
In The adventures of Tom Sawyer , Tom is a mischievous child who envies Huck Finn's lazy lifestyle and freedom . As Tom's adventure proceed , however , critical moments show Tom moving away from his childhood concerns and making mature , responsible decision . These moments include Tom's testimony at Muff Potter's trial , his saving of Becky from punishment , and his heroic navigation doing out of the cave . By the end of the novel , Tom is persuading Huck to staying at the widow Douglas , urging Huck to accept tight collars , Sunday school , and good table manners . He is no longer a disobedient character undermining the adult order , but a defender of respectability and responsibility . In the end , growing up for tom means abide by social custom and sacrificing the freedom of childhood . Yet Tom's development isn't totally coherent . The novel jumps back and forth among several events Tom's general misbehavior , which represents in his acceptance of blame for the book that Becky rips ; and his struggle with Injun Joe , which with Tom and Huck's discovery of the treasure . Because of the fragment or variability of the novel , Tom's character can seem inconsistent , as it varies depending upon his situation . Tom is a paradoxical figure in some respects --for example , has no determinate age . Sometimes Tom shows the naivete of a small child . On the other hand , Tom's romantic interest in Becky and his fascination with Huck's smoking and drinking seem more like an adolescent . The narrator of this novel is an adult who views the adult world critically . He looks back on the pastimes of childhood in a somewhat idealized manner . Tom sawyer is warmly welcome by children . Huck Finn fits into the tradition of the Bildungsroman:a novel of maturation and development.(Staphanie Pumphrey , 2003 : 38 ) . Huck is an outcast and he distrusts the morals and regulations of the society that regard him as low class and fails to protect him from abuse . This understanding about society , and his growing relationship with Jim , lead Huck to doubt many of the knowledge s that he has received in school . Once more , we see him choosing to "go to hell " rather than abide by what he has been taught . His moral development is sharply contrasted to the characteristics of Tom Sawyer , who is influenced by adventure novels and Sunday --school teachings . Mark twain writes The adventure of Huckleberry Finn with the hot topic in American society ---the problem of slavery .
2.Two common points of the the two novels
2.1.writing background
Samuel Langhorne Clement , who wrote under the pen name Mark twain , was born in Florida , Missouri , in1835 . At the age of four he moved his family to Hannibal , a town on the Mississippi River much like the towns in his two most famous novels , The adventures of Tom Sayer and The adventures of Huckleberry Finn .The young Clement began his life in a fairly affluent family that owned a number of household slaves . When Clements was twelve his riverboats , life on the river gave Twain material for several of his books , including the raft scenes of Huck Finn and all of the material for his autobiographical life on the Mississippi .In 1861 , the Civil War exploded across America , shutting down the Mississippi for travel or shipping . In 1863 he began signing articles with the name Mark Twain . Throughout the late 1860s and 1870s , Twain 's articles , stories , memoirs , and novels , characterized by an immense humor and refine language and dialect , granted him an almost inconceivable celebrity . In 1876 , The Adventures of Tom Sayer was published to wild national acclaim , strengthening Twain's position in American literary circles . As the nation prospered economically in the post--civil war period ----an era that came to be known as the Gilded Age . His books were sold door -to -door . Twain began work on Huck Finn , a sequel to Tom Sawyer , in an effort to capitalize on the popularity of the earlier book .
2.2.Writing style
These two novels are classified as realism and romanticism in American literature . Realistic writers aways expressed their concern for the world of experience , of the commonplace , and for the world of experience , of the commonplace , and for the familial and the low . (常耀新,2003 :117) there two novels came from the real life . Mark Twain's concern about the people from low class are based on the philosophy that people will have the chance to be happy if they have realistic expectations . It is never possible to cut off romanticism with real life . Romantic writers are worshipers of nature , especially the subline aspect of a natural scene .
