Passage 2
Two years ago, a lot of Londoners heard alarms all over the town. The Emergency services, the Fire Departments, the Police, hospitals, and ambulances stood by, ready to go into action. In railway underground stations, people read notices and maps that told them where to go and what to do in the emergency. This was Exercise Flood Call to prepare people for a flood emergency. London wasn’t flooded yet, but it is possible that it would be. In 1236 and in 1663, London was badly flooded. In 1928, people living in Westminster, the heart of London, drowned in floods. And in 1953, one hundred people, living on the eastern edge of the London suburbs were killed, again, in the floods. At last, Greater Council took actions to prevent this disaster from happening again. Though a flood wall was built in the 1960s, Londoners still must be prepared for the possible disaster. If it happens, 50 underground stations will be under water. Electricity, gas and phone services will be out of action. Roads will be drowned. It will be impossible to cross any of the bridges between north and south London. Imagine: London will look like the famous Italian city, Venice. Passage 3
While watching film, we are always attracted by such scene that two actors are fighting each other hard. At the beginning, we can see that they just fight with their fists, or kick with their feet. But as the film goes on, they hit each other with desks, chairs or sticks. Sometimes, we can see blood flowing all over one’s face, but the fighting continues until one actor is threw out of a window of a high building and falls to the ground or into a lake. Then he died.
As we all know that the actor isn’t really dead, and even isn’t hurt. Do you know the reason? Actually the actors who fall out of high windows or ski over the edge of a cliff, are professionals. They make their living by doing such things. And these actors are named stuntmen. That is to say, they show tricks.
To these actors, actually, there are two aspects to their work. What we are seeing on the screen is most of the things they do. For example, they jump from a fast-moving train. However, they fall on to cardboard boxes not to a hard ground, and those cardboard boxes are empty and covered with a mattress. Besides, when they hit one another with desks, the desks are made of soft wood and when they are threw out of windows, the glass is made of sugar!
Their work also needs a very high degree of skill and training though it depends on such trick. Actually, careful timing is the key to a stuntman’s success. For instance, when he is “blow up” in a battle scene, he has to jump out of the way of the explosion just at the right moment.
Generally because their lives are dangerous, the stuntmen always get a high salary. They are often hurt seriously, and sometimes even killed. A Chinese stuntman, for example, was killed when he jumped from a fast-moving train on a rainy day.
