Have you ever heard of Xia Boyu? He was born in Chongqing in 1949. In May 2018, after he tried four times, the 16 man made his dream come true by reaching the top of Qomolangma successfully. The first time I saw Kai, she was sitting in my front yard, hugging my dog Harley. She and her husband Sean had just moved into a small house down the road from us. The Dunhuang Academy (研究院) used AI (人工智能) technology to work with a big Chinese technology company Huawei. They started a new way to show the Mogao Grottoes (莫高窟) in Gansu Province. Huawei’s new AI platform (平台) —Hetu is connected with Digital (数字化的) Dunhuang. It can offer visitors a 360-degree virtual (虚拟的) tour of the Mogao Grottoes by using phones.
The high tech show means that visitors can spend less time inside the Mogao Grottoes and it will be better for protecting them. Also, visitors can get more information about them. We can achieve a better balance between protection and visit. What’s more, we can find new ways of helping develop Dunhuang art. Since the early 1990s, the Dunhuang Academy has used digital technology to keep information about the grottoes. So far, it has collected plenty of information and has achieved global (全球的) sharing. It has played an important role in the research of the grottoes and the progress of many art works.
The project creates a new experience.
