Meeting people for the first time
When we meet people for the first time, we introduce ourselves. With English names, the given name (first name) comes first and the family name comes second. For example, Robert is a given name and Miller is the family name. If you are speaking to people, you might use a title (称呼) before their family name, such as Mr. Smith, or Dr. Green. The title always comes before the person’s family name, not after. Teachers are usually called “Mr.”, “Mrs.” or “Ms.” and not “teacher”.
Some married women use the title “Mrs.” and their husband’s family name. For example, if a girl called Sarah Smith marries a man called Tim Brown, people might call her Mrs. Brown. Women who are not married sometimes use the title “Miss”. However, the title “Ms.” is becoming more common (普遍). This can be used by women who are married or single.
A Chinese girl called Bai Bingbing married an American man called Frank Black. At her wedding, her friend asked what they should call her, Ms. Bai, or Mrs. Black? Bingbing joked, “I guess you could call me Mrs. Gray!”
