Questions 1-5 are based on the following passage.
Details of telephone charges can be found at the front of any telephone directory (电话薄) , where you will see that the cost of your call will depend not only on the duration and distance but aim on what time of day the call is made and some-times on whether or not it is made at the weekend or during the week. Between most places in Britain it is now possible to dial direct by STD (Subscriber Trunk Dialing) (用户直通电话). Charge rates are higher for calls made from coin-box phones and call offices than for those made from ordinary lines, and calls connected by the operator are normally more expensive than calls you dial direct.
STD facilities now exist between Britain and most countries in Western Europe and also with a number of other overseas countries beside. Other calls will require the assistance of the operator. Transferred charge calls are those where the people you want to speak to agree to pay for your call to them. Personal calls are those where you tell the operator the name of the person you wish to speak to. You are not connected if that person cannot be found, though a message can be left for him or her to ring the operator later.
From most telephones, if you want the police, fire or ambulance services, dial 999. Tell the operator the service you want. Wait until the emergency authority answers. Then give them the full address where help is needed and other necessary information. 999 calls are free.

Questions 6-10 are based on the following passage.
Motorways are, no doubt, the safest roads in the country. Mile for mile, vehicle for vehicle, you are much less likely to be killed or seriously injured than on an ordinary road. On the other hand, if you do have a serious accident on a motorway, deaths are much more likely to occur than in a comparable accident elsewhere on the roads.
Motorways have no sharp bends, no roundabouts (道路交叉口的圆环) or traffic lights and thus speeds are much greater than on other roads. Though the 70 m.p.h. limit is still in force, it is often treated with the contempt （轻视）that most drivers have for the 30 m.p.h. limit applying in built-up areas in Britain. Added to this is the fact that motorway drivers seem to like traveling in groups with perhaps barely ten meters between each vehicle. The resulting terrible pileups (involving maybe a hundred vehicles) when one vehicle stops for some reason——have become all too familiar through pictures in newspapers or on television. How many of these drivers realize that it takes a car about one hundred metres to brake to a stop from 70 m.p.h.? Drivers also seem to think that sudden changes of the weather never trouble them when they drive on motorways. However wet the road, whatever the visibility in mist of fog, they drive at foolish speeds ignorant of police warnings or speed restrictions until their journey brings forth an accident.
Perhaps one remedy for this motorway madness would be better driver education. At present, learner drivers are barred (禁止) from motorways and are thus unprepared as far as this kind of driving is concerned.
