Lesson Twelve Part One:Event 35. Describe an exciting trip/long-distance trip you made. You should say: when you made the trip where you went how the trip was and explain why it was exciting. Last summer I had a very nice holiday with my parents in Sanya, Hainan Province. It is a very famous coastal city in the southern part of China. The place is very beautiful, and each year thousands of tourists spend their holidays there. We spend four whole days in Sanya. We spent our time visiting tourist sites along the coastal area. The blue sky, navy sea, white beaches, my eyes are filled with beautiful landscapes. My parents and I also took the golden chance to swim and enjoyed the sunbathing on the comfortable beach. One more thing worth mentioning is that I also tried scuba diving there. It was so fascinating. I swam very close to the coral beds and beautiful fished swam besides me elegantly. Never shall I forget such a unique experience. Well, of course, that did cost me a lot. Apart from seeing the sceneries, we also had many delicious sea foods like lobster, crab, oyster and so on. Even today, I can still clearly remember the feast I enjoyed in Sanya. For four years, because my parents and I had always been busy about our own business, our family hasn’t had a chance to spend such a nice holiday together. That’s why this trip to Sanya has been a very exciting one for me. I’ll always treasure this long-distance trip as my best memory. 36. Describe an enjoyable visit. You should say: who visited you what for what you did and explain how your friend felt, why. On my 25th birthday I invited a lot of friends over to my home. The party was scheduled for 6 o’clock. On the morning of that day, I ordered a birthday cake from the baker’s in my neighbourhood. Then I went shopping in a supermarket and bought many balloons, 25 lotus-shaped candles, vegetables such as cabbage, tomatoes, cheese, shrimp, bacon and salad dressing. You know, all the stuff needed to make a salad. On the afternoon of that day I decorated my living room with balloons and candles and then at around 5 o’clock I started to prepare dinner. When my friends entered my home at 6, their faces lit up immediately because of what they called “a romantic ambience”. During that party I received many gifts. We sat around the table and talked of many beautiful memories from the past. We had a great time that night. 37. Describe a project you finished with others. You should say: with whom you finished this project when it was how you did it and whether you received any benefit. Even until this day I can still remember a project I was involved in when I was at college. I took part in a translation group because I wanted to improve both my English and Chinese. Once, we got a job from a government agency to translate a water supply manual from Chinese to English. It was a document of more than 100 pages. Then our group decided to do it together. We decided the number of steps we must go through and the person in charge. Then we distributed the task, translated our respective parts, exchanged our translation with each other, corrected the mistakes, unified the translation of the same English terms and connected our translations and give them to the person in charge for final editing. During the whole process we spent a lot of time together translating and discussing. Sometimes we even had quarrels because of our different understanding of a word. Anyway we ironed out all the difficulties and finished the job an scheduled. To our surprise, we got a bonus later for the translation as the agency was really satisfied with our work 38. Describe one thing you find interesting about cultural difference. You should say: what it is how you learned about this cultural difference and explain why you think it’s interesting. I’ve been abroad in my secondary school for a period of time, and in my current college, which is affiliated to the China Foreign Ministry, I also have plenty of chances to get in touch with foreign people. They are either worldly renowned scholars or diplomats from around the world; the Arabian world, the European countries, North and Latin America, and Africa…Foreign culture is then becoming a very vague term. The more people I meet, the harder it is to generalize. It’s like asking a foreigner who’s spent years in China what Chinese culture is. But I can still talk about a most recent case that happened around me though it’s not interesting. One of my classmates failed a course because he’s got a technical problem identified as plagiarism. The professor is from Yale. I mention this because I discovered that though Chinese teachers don’t allow plagiarism, they don’t put emphasis on not doing it. None of my Chinese teachers has ever brought our attention to this issue but we are always warned in the first classed given by my 12 foreign teachers since I’ve entered the college, that plagiarism is seriously banned and we are given detailed training on how to make quotations and bibliography. Though the situation in China is improving, it is still far from enough. I regard this a difference in the degree of respect to people’s intellectual property. Plagiarizers are called intellectual thieves among my foreign professors but we don’t have that serious of wording in Chinese. That’s now what I see about cultural difference, and it’s also an issue we should pay special attention to. 39. Describe an important change in your life. You should say: what it is what the effect on you is how you feel about it and explain why it is important. Actually, that sounds kind of unusual but one of the turning points in my life was when I got my first bicycle. I remember it was a present my father gave me on my seventh birthday. It was a brand new bicycle. You know, back in the 1980s, having a bicycle was really something, especially for a boy of only seven. That was a very important day for me. For the first time, I could go out on my own and go as far as I wanted to. I used to polish the bicycle everyday and take really good care of it. Of course, that only lasted a few months, and then I lost interest in it. I think the reason that it was an important change for me is that for the first time in my life, I realized what a fantastic thing it was to be free, and to go anywhere with your free will. That was the beginning of a lifelong craving for travelling. By the time I graduated from university, I had almost been to most of the major cities in China. And now I’m thinking of the world outside China. Of course, as a return for his kindness, I will buy my father a brand new car on his 60th birthday. 40. Describe a wedding that you attended. You should say: when it was who got married what happened at the wedding and explain how you felt about it. OK, I’m going to talk about my own wedding. My wife and I got married in late September, in Xi’an, my hometown. I remember it was very cold. We held the reception 2 months later in Beijing, my wife’s hometown. We had quite reception, about 200 guests, I believe. My wife wore a traditional Chinese Qi Pao, but I wore a modern business suit. We had a lavish dinner, consisting of different dishes from various provinces. Of course, there were the forma speeches, the exchanging of wedding rings, and so on. Afterwards most of the guests indulged themselves in the wedding feast. Quite a number of my friends and I got drunk. My wife was so angry but she was OK the next day though. Also we took a lot of photos and we even video-taped the whole thing. My wife and I watched the video-tape again and again. We believe that was the happiest moment in our lives. Part Two: Examples of Questions in Part Three 1. Why? Why not? Could you give me an example? Anything else? Describe a famous person you would like to meet. You should say: who this person is where you first saw him or her                          how/why this person is famous and explain what you would say to this person. Describe a place you know where the public may go to listen to music You should say: where this place it what kind of people go there what kind of music you can listen to there and explain how you feel about this place. How does A differ from B? =How is A different from B? =What is the difference between A and B? What do you think about…? Why do you think some people…? Could you give me an example? How are young people and old people different in their attitudes to…? What do you think we can do to…? How do you think…will change in the future? 等等。
