A. can't B. mustn't C. don't have to D. ought not to 答案与解析 C don't have to相当于needn't,表示“没有必要做某事”。 3.________me up so early. I don't have to go to school today and I can sleep for more hours. A. You needn't wake B. You don't need to wake C. You needn't have woken D. You didn't need to wake 4.— You didn't wait for Mr. Black last night, did you? — No, but we ________. I still have enough time, so I could manage it myself. A. needn't have done B. needn't do C. shouldn't have done D. mustn't do 答案与解析 A 句意:——凯特,我把全部的盘子都给你洗了。 have washed说明动作已完成,needn't have done表示:本没必要做某事却做了。 6.We are now faced with a new problem involved in the popularity of private cars ________ road conditions need ________. A. which; to be improved B. that; to be improved C. where; improved D. when; improved that引导同位语从句解释说明a new problem;need可以跟动名词或不定式的被动式表被动,即need doing/need to be done。 I was recently invited to dinner by a friend. I asked him if he knew me”可知,作者可能已经遗忘他了。 attend a class意为“听课”。 think about意为“考虑”; work on意为“忙于……”; look into意为“调查”; fill out意为“填(表格)”。 17.A 由第一段的“... but that I had changed his life”可推断,这位经理的生活在那个晚上发生了转变。 owe sth. to sb. Years ago a farmer owned land along the Atlantic seacoast. He constantly advertised for hired hands. Most people were reluctant to work on farms along the Atlantic. They dreaded (可怕) the awful storms that raged across the Atlantic, wreaking havoc (混乱) on the buildings and crops. As the farmer interviewed applicants for the job, he received a steady stream of refusals. Finally, a short, thin man, well past middle age, approached the farmer. “Are you a good farmhand?” the farmer asked him. “Well, I can sleep when the wind blows,” answered the little man. Although puzzled by this answer, the farmer, desperate for help, hired him. The little man worked well around the farm, busy from dawn to dusk, and the farmer felt satisfied with the man's work. Then one night the wind howled loudly in from offshore. Jumping out of bed, the farmer grabbed a lantern and rushed next door to the hired hand's sleeping quarters. He shook the little man and yelled, “Get up! A storm is coming! Tie things down before they blow away!” The little man rolled over in bed and said firmly, “No sir. I told you, I can sleep when the wind blows.” Enraged by the response, the farmer was tempted to fire him on the spot. Instead, he hurried outside to prepare for the storm. To his amazement, he discovered that all of the haystacks had been covered with tarpaulins The cows were in the barn, the chickens were in the coops, and the doors were barred. The shutters were tightly secured. Everything was tied down. Nothing could blow away. The farmer then understood what his hired hand meant, so he returned to his bed to also sleep while the wind blew. 1. Why did the farm owner fail to hire hands many times? A. Because he paid little for their work. B. Because no one wanted to work along the Atlantic. C. Because there often were storms on the Atlantic. D. Because he was waiting for the thin, short man. 答案与解析 C 从文章第一段中“They dreaded(可怕) the awful storms that raged across the Atlantic.” 2. When the little man agreed to accept the job, the farm owner felt________. A. satisfied and happy B. surprised but happy C. confused but satisfied D. puzzled and sad 3. What does the underlined word “enraged” mean in the passage? A. Rude. B. Fearful. C. Angry. D. Shocked. 4. What does the writer want to tell us? A. Never hire those who you don't understand. B. A man should keep his promise when he decides to do something. C. One should be friendly to others. D. Never judge a person from what he or she says.
