Text 10
You teach your children to brush their teeth three times a day. You teach them good manners so they can get along with people. You teach them to study hard so they can get into good schools and, from there, good careers. And perhaps you teach them other valuable, practical things as well ...
You may teach them to exercise and eat well so they don't become overweight and more susceptible to disease. You may teach them to read on their own so they learn how to find answers for themselves. You may teach them some form of selfdefense so they can protect themselves a bit better and have a little more confidence.
These things are all good. And money can't replace any of them. But at the same time, none of these things can replace the need to teach your children good money habits.
其次部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

Sometimes the real world can be a confusing place. It is not always fair or kind. And in the real world there are not always happy endings. That is why, every once in a while, we like to escape into the world of fantasy — a place where things always go our way and there is always a happy ending.
We want to believe in fantastic creatures in imaginary lands. We want to believe in magic powers, good friends, and the power of good to overcome evil. We all fantasize about being able to fly and lift buildings off the ground. And how good a magic sword would feel in our hand as we go off to kill a dragon or win the hand of a beautiful princess (公主).
The amazing adventures of Superman, Peter Pan and Harry Potter have charmed many people, children and adult alike. The main reason is that these stories offer us chances to get away from this real, frustrating world and allow us to find some magical solutions to our problems. For example, Superman always arrives in the nick of time to prevent a disaster from happening, Peter Pan can fly at will to tease the bad guy Captain Hook, and Harry Potter has this magic power to take revenge on his uncle, aunt and cousin, who always illtreat him.

C. attractive D. disappointing
答案与解析 D 由句中单词problem可知应为disappointing,其他各项都是褒义词。

Steven Spielberg is a household name. He is a person who has entertained the world with stories of all kinds, a person who's made us cry with the tale of an alien who just wanted to go home, who's scared us with sharks and dinosaurs, and who's brought us the horrors of World War Ⅱ in Schindler's List.
Spielberg developed an interest in movies at an early age. At 12, he started his attempt to make his own short films. At age 16, Spielberg made his first film, Firelight, which earned back its whole budget in one night — US $500. Spielberg got poor grades in high school and wasn't accepted to any film schools. But one of his short films called Amblin won awards at Venice and Atlanta film festivals. It also caught attention of the head of University's TV division. He signed Spielberg to a sevenyear contract. At 20, Spielberg was the youngest director ever to get such_a_deal.
In 1974, Spielberg made Sugarland Express, but to the producer's surprise, the film performed poorly at the box office. The year 1975 was a different story, however. Spielberg was chosen to direct Jaws. “Parts of the book terrorized me. I tried to translate my fear into visual language.” He succeeded. It was a great hit. Spielberg continued his string of hits in 1981 with Raiders of the Lost Ark. The film earned Spielberg his first Oscar nomination for best director. Films two and three in the series also thrilled audiences. In 1985, Spielberg challenged himself to make a more serious film. The Colour Purple was the result. The film earned 11 Academy Award nominations, but didn't win a single award. Finally in 1993 Spielberg's heartbreaking film Schindler's List earned him an Academy Award for best director.
In 2002, Spielberg received another honour that he treasures highly — a college diploma. But he hopes his children won't take 33 years to finish their degrees!
Spielberg continues to make films. Not all are box office hits, but each tells a story as only Spielberg can. Spielberg ranks as the most successful director ever. Other_directors_may_try_to_catch_him_—_

Dos and Don'ts in Whale Watching
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has developed guidelines for whale watching in Johnstone Strait, where killer whales are found on a daily basis each summer. It is strongly recommended that vessel (船只) operators follow these guidelines for all kinds of whales.
•Approach whales from the side, not from the front or the back.
•Approach no closer than 100 metres, then stop the boat but keep the engine on.
•Keep noise levels down — no horns, whistles or racing of engines.
•Start your boat only after the whales are more than 100 metres from your vessel.
•Leave the area slowly, gradually moving faster when you are more than 300 metres from the whales.
•Approach and leave slowly, avoiding sudden changes in speed or direction.
•Avoid disturbing groups of resting whales.
•Keep at low speeds and remain in the same direction if travelling side by side with whales.
•When whales are travelling close to shore, avoid crowding them near the shore or coming between the whales and the shore.
•Limit the time spent with any group of whales to less than 30 minutes at a time when within 100 to 200 metres of whales.
•If there is more than one vessel at the same observation spot, be sure to avoid any boat position that would result in surrounding the whales.
•Work together by communicating with other vessels, and make sure that all operators are aware of the whale watching guidelines.
