He told his employer — contractor (承包商) of his plans to leave the housebuilding business to live a more leisurely life with his wife and enjoy his extended family. He would miss the paycheck each week, but he wanted to retire. They could get by. The contractor was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one more house as a personal favor. The carpenter said yes, but over time it was easy to see that his heart was not in his work. He resorted to shoddy workmanship and used inferior materials. It was an unfortunate way to end a dedicated career. When the carpenter finished his work, his employer came to inspect the house. Then he handed the frontdoor key to the carpenter and said, “This is your house ... my gift to you.” The carpenter was shocked! What a shame! If he had only known he was building his own house, he would have done it all so differently. So it is with us. We build our lives, a day at a time, often putting less than our best into the building. Then, with a shock, we realize we have to live in the house we have built. If we could do it over, we would do it much differently. But, you cannot go back. You are the carpenter, and every day you hammer a nail, place a board, or erect a wall. Someone once said, “Life is a doityourself project.” Your attitude, and the choices, you make today, help build the “house” you will live in tomorrow. Therefore, build wisely! 1.Why did the carpenter want to retire? A. Because the contractor usually paid him little. B. Because he was in poor health. C. Because he wanted to live a peaceful life with his family. D. Because the contractor thought he couldn't build good houses. 2.Before retiring, the carpenter was asked to ________. A. build a house for himself B. help the contractor build another house C. hunt for a good worker for his employer D. hand over all his paycheck 答案与解析 B 细节理解题。 3. It is obvious that the carpenter built his last house ________. A. wisely B. carelessly C. carefully D. happily 答案与解析 B 推理推断题。 4.The writer writes this story to tell us ________. A. we should build wisely the “house” we will live in tomorrow B. we should learn from the carpenter C. the carpenter was very clever to finish his career D. how cruel the contractor was to the carpenter 答案与解析 A 主旨大意题。 5.Why does the writer say “It was an unfortunate way to end a dedicated career.”? A. He thinks the carpenter should have built the house better. B. He thinks the carpenter wasn't able to work as usual. C. He thinks the carpenter was too old to work any more. D. He thinks the carpenter would be poor after he retired. B Recently, in the hope of earning both money and social experience, I became a doortodoor salesman. I once read a saying: “If somebody wants something of you, you will be treated as warmly as spring, but if they don't, you may be treated as coldly as winter.” You may consider it an exaggeration, but if you are a salesman, it is clearly correct. You would never have found it to be so true if you hadn't been a salesman. You needn't stand doubtful looks and unfriendly views; you needn't listen to something completely wrong and nod to say that it was quite right; you needn't always keep patience and smile; you needn't repeat the same sentences over again; you needn't talk to somebody you dislike. I did this work for a month; then I decided to give it up. In spite of the above reasons, I found I was paying too much attention to the job and thus sacrificing my study time. The latest test result proved that my grades were getting lower. Even worse, I hadn't enough time to join my classmates in college activities. Sometimes I felt lonely and unhappy because of both my study and my parttime job. Now I don't think it is worth doing such a thing even though I was earning money at great cost. Newspapers and magazines often publish stories about good students who do parttime work and keep high scores in class. But according to my experience, parttime work can have some strong bad effects on study. Most students don't see the relationship between study and work in a correct way. In my opinion, if it isn't a must for money reasons, students should be cautious about taking up a parttime job. In western countries even the children of very rich families take part in hard jobs during the summer vacation. 6.Which fact is NOT a reason that caused the writer to give up his parttime job? A. Too much attention to it and his grades getting lower. B. He often missed some college activities. C. Sometimes he felt tired and unhappy. D. It didn't earn him much money. 7. Which of the following has the closest meaning to the underlined word “sacrificing”? A. Losing. B. Wasting. C. Using. D. Getting. 8.The writer thought ________. A. to do parttime jobs was unnecessary B. parttime jobs had good effect upon study C. it's hard to plan study and work correctly D. parttime jobs were good for students 答案与解析 C 推理推断题。由最终一段第一、二句,尤其是“... should be cautious about taking up a parttime job”可知,作者认为合理规划学习和工作很难。 9.Who should take parttime jobs according to the text above? A. Every college student. B. Those who want to get study experience. C. Those in great need of money. D. Those from very rich families.
