Robots have appeared in Hollywood films such as Robocop and The Terminator. The robots in these films are stronger, faster and more intelligent than people. In real life, robots are mainly used in factories. They do many different jobs. Usually these jobs are too dangerous, difficult or boring for humans. Robots also help disabled people and people who cannot look after themselves. For example, scientists are making a robot to help blind people. Nowadays many blind people have a dog to help them. This dog is called a guide dog. In the future, robot dogs might take the place of these guide dogs. One robot guide dog is called Meldog. It has wheels. It usually “walks” in front of its owner. It is very clever. It knows the speed of its owner's walk. Meldog talks to its owner by radio. The owner wears a special belt. This belt sends instructions to the owner from Meldog such as “Stop here”, “Turn left” and “Turn right”. In the United States, another type of robot helps disabled workers. This robot, called Kilroy, helps disabled computer operators. The robot hears the sound of its owner's voice. It follows instructions such as “Turn the page” and “Make a cup of coffee”. This robot will bring its owner tissue paper when he or she sneezes! Robots are also used in American hospitals. They can do simple jobs. For example, they shave patients and brush their teeth and take meals from the kitchen to the patients' rooms. They never get lost because they have a map of the hospital in their computer memory. 21.Some robots in real life are ________. A. dangerous B. boring C. film stars D. factory workers 答案与解析 D 依据其次段第一句“In real life, robots are mainly used in factories.” 22.Some disabled people need robots to ________. A. make robots B. become scientists C. look after themselves D. do dangerous jobs 23.Meldog is a ________. A. blind dog B. robot scientist C. real dog D. robot guide dog 答案与解析 D 依据第四段第一句“One robot guide dog is called Meldog.” 24.The robots used in American hospitals can do the following except ________. A. make a map B. shave patients C. brush the patients' teeth D. take meals from the kitchen to the patients' rooms 答案与解析 A 依据最终一段第三句“For example, they shave patients and brush their teeth and take meals from the kitchen to the patients' rooms.” A项正确。 B Did you know there is a substance that can kill you even if you don't want it? Many adults and children die from it. It's called secondhand smoke. It comes from the smoke that is breathed out by a smoker, as well as the smoke that comes from the end of burning cigarettes. It's almost as lethal as smoking a cigarette. Secondhand smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals, and of those, 200 are poisonous and 43 can cause cancer. It causes about 3,000 lung cancer deaths and 35,000 heart disease deaths to nonsmokers each year. Some of the chemicals breathed in are lead, formaldehyde (a poisonous, colourless gas), benzene (colourless liquid from oil) and ammonia (a smell gas). Every time someone lights a cigarette near you, you are being forced to breathe in all those chemicals. You can get a number of diseases — many incurable (不能治愈的) — from secondhand smoke, but it is especially dangerous for children. It is estimated that secondhand smoke is responsible for between 150,000 and 300,000 lower respiratory (呼吸的) tract (消化系统) infections (感染) in young children and because of this, between 7,500 and 15,000 children are hospitalized each year. So if you smoke, try to give up! Otherwise, avoid smoky areas and breathe fresh air. 25. The passage is written to tell us________. A. not to smoke B. smoking is harmful to smokers and nonsmokers C. how to give up smoking D. smoking should be banned in public places 26. The underlined word “lethal” in Paragraph One means________. 27. Which of the following words can best describe the author's attitude towards smoking in public? A. Interested. B. Worried. C. Angry. D. Sad. 28. The second paragraph mainly tells us________. A. the great harm of secondhand smoke B. the basic parts of smoke C. why the number of people getting diseases keeps increasing D. how to reduce the effect of smoke 答案与解析 A 文章其次段通过几个数字和烟雾中所含有的有害成分来说明被动吸烟的害处。 C He walked slower as he came to the block where he knew the building was. It was probably in the middle of the block, probably that storefront that was lit. It was 7:30 and all the other stores were closed. Yeah, that must be it, he thought to himself. He almost stopped as he pictured himself walking into the room. Everyone would be looking at him. What would he say? “Good evening. I'm Spencer.” No. Maybe he would ring the bell outside and have someone come to the door. They could walk in together and then he wouldn't be alone. He already knew what he would tell them when they asked him why he had come. He had thought a lot about the easiest thing for him to say. “I came to learn to improve myself.” That sounded good. They would know what that meant. He fingered the pencil in his jacket pocket. He hadn't known what else to bring. The same sign was in the window of the storefront. “402 Main St. Adult Learning Center.” He took a deep breath and continued to walk slowly to the window. He looked inside as he passed. There was no one there. Was he too early? Would he be the only one to come? He walked to the corner and stopped. He knew he wasn't going home. He just needed a couple of more minutes to think about it. He turned round and walked faster now back to 409 Main St. He turned the knob (门把) but the door wouldn't open. A woman walked by. “Oh, they're closed today,” she said. “It's some kind of holiday or something ... They're usually open every day, though. Come back tomorrow.” He turned and looked at her, and then nodded. “Thank you,” he said. “Maybe I'll do that. I'll see how I feel tomorrow.” 29. How did the man in the story feel about going to the Adult Learning Center? A. Uninterested. B. Excited. C. Nervous. D. Calm. 30. Why was the center closed? A. Because it was a weekend. B. Because Spencer came too early. C. For some unknown reason. D. Because he was the only one to come. 答案与解析 C 依据“It's some kind of holiday or something ...” 31. What is the author's main purpose in this passage? A. To encourage adults to go to education classes. B. To tell why adult education classes are sometimes closed. C. To describe what 402 Main Street at night look like. D. To describe a man's feeling about going to an adult class. 32. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage? A. The man often went to the Adult Learning Center before. B. The man didn't walk into the Adult Learning Center at last. C. The man brought nothing in his pocket except a pencil. D. The woman didn't work in the Adult Learning Center. D AMERICANA HOTEL CRYSTAL CITY Convenient location 5 minutes from Washington D.
