He found it impossible to get a new one and he had spent all his money. So he decided to go down to the south of the country, where it was said that things were better, and that it was easier to find a job. The best way to go was by train; so he went to the railway station and got into a train which was going to London. He was the only passenger in his carriage, when another man came in carrying a gun and said to him, “Your money or your life?”“I haven't got a penny,” John answered. “But why are you shaking so much?” the man with the gun asked angrily. “Because I thought you were the ticket collector, and I haven't even got a ticket.” answered John. A All her life, my mother wanted busy children. It was very important that her house should remain at all times clean and tidy. You could turn your back for a moment in my mother's house, leave a halfwritten letter on the dining room table, a magazine open on the chair, and turn around to find that my mother had “put it back where it belonged” as she explained. My wife, on one of her first visits to my mother's house, placed a packet of biscuits on an end table and went to the kitchen to fetch a drink. When she returned, she found the packet had been removed. Confused (怀疑的), she set down her drink and went back to the kitchen for more biscuits, only to return to find that her drink had disappeared. Up to then she had guessed that everyone in my family held onto their drinks, so as not to make water rings on the end tables. Now she knows better. These disappearances had a confusing effect on our family. We were all inclined to (有……的倾向) forgetfulness, and it was common for one of us, upon returning from the bathroom, to find that every sign of his work in progress had disappeared suddenly. “Do you remember what I was doing?”was a question frequently asked, but rarely answered. Now my_sister_has_developed_a_secondhand_love_of_clean_windows,_and my brother does the cleaning in his house, perhaps to avoid having to be the one to lift his feet. I try not to think about it too much, but I have at this later time started to dust the furniture once a week. 21. Which of the following is TRUE about my mother? A. She enjoyed removing others' drinks. B. She became more and more forgetful. C. She preferred to do everything by herself. D. She wanted to keep her house in good order. 22. My wife could not find her biscuits and drink in my mother's house because ________. A. she had already finished them B. my mother had taken them away C. she forgot where she had left them D. someone in my family was holding them 23. The underlined part in the fifth paragraph suggests that my sister ________. A. is happy to clean windows B. loves to clean used windows C. is fond of cleaning used windows D. likes cleaning windows as my mother did B February 14 is a day for people who have fallen in love. On this day, these men and women give gifts and cards to each other for Valentine's Day. This day has been popular with people in love for a long time. At first, this holiday was called Lupercalia. Then the name of the day was changed to Saint Valentine's Day. The man named Saint Valentine was killed on February 14,270 A.D. because he was a Christian Before Saint Valentine was killed, February 14 was the old Roman holiday, Lupercalia. The church wanted people to think of a Christian holiday on this day, so the church changed the name of the holiday. This change did not stop people in love from giving gifts to each other. People usually gave gloves, handkerchiefs, or even underwear (内衣) as gifts. Sometimes people also put hearts and flowers on the present before giving it to the other persons. Valentine cards did not become popular until the 1750s. The first Valentine cards were made by hand. People wrote their own words on the cards. These words were usually kind or funny. Cards made by machines became more popular around 1850. All of a sudden, Valentine's Day became a big holiday for people who made and sold cards. Now, every year around February 14, cards and chocolates fill stores for people in love. 24. How did people celebrate(庆祝) Lupercalia? A. They went to church. B. They sent cards to each other. C. They sang and danced. D. They gave gifts to each other. 25. When did Valentine cards first become popular? A. About 270 A.D. B. About 1850 A.D. C. About 1750 A.D. D. They have always been popular. 答案与解析 C 由第五段中“Valentine cards did not become popular until the 1750s.” 26. What helped to make Valentine cards more popular? A. Machines which made cards. B. People who liked Valentine cards. C. People's interest in Valentine's Day. D. Churches. 27. What is special about Valentine cards? A. They are made by machine. B. They are handmade. C. The words people write on the cards are kind and funny. D. They help express people's love. C It all started when my sister was invited to speak at a threeday conference in Budapest. Mom and I thought we would join her because she was not able to take her husband or daughter. After all, how often does a trip to Budapest come along? We began planning a week long trip to Budapest. It was the first visit to Europe for all three of us, and there was so much we wanted to see that we couldn't narrow our base destinations down any further than Venice, Budapest, Rome, Sorrento and Florence. We immediately applied for passports. We looked over maps and through books trying to decide exactly where to stay. I spent hours and days researching hotels, transportation, museums. We waited and waited to book tickets so we had a starting point on our dates. Finally everything fell into place and we decided our plans. The excitement continued to build day by day. I researched packing tips online and my list of necessities grew. Mom and I compared notes for weeks trying to decide what to wear, what to bring, what to buy ... in the end, however, we just chose whatever was comfortable and to be honest, mainly wore the same couple of clothes day after day, washing them in the hotel as necessary. The only good clothes we took were for the ballet in Budapest. And thank goodness for that — I can't imagine lugging (携带) a larger suitcase on and off during the journey to Florence, and some other places. The big day arrived and with bags packed and repacked, it was off to the airport for our first European adventure! 28. The first paragraph mainly tells the readers ________. A. the author's sister would attend a conference in Budapest B. how the author planned their trip to Budapest C. where the author's family would go to travel D. the author and her mom and sister would visit Europe 29. The author planned to ________ in Budapest. A. watch a ballet B. buy some good clothes C. attend the conference D. visit her sister 答案与解析 A 参见第三段倒数其次句:她们所带的最好的衣服就是预备在布达佩斯观看芭蕾舞剧。 30. They made the following preparations for the travel EXCEPT that they ________. A. applied for passports B. booked hotels online C. searched for advice on travel online D. wrote down what they would carry along 31. We can learn from the text that ________. A. they would carry a larger suitcase during the journey B. the author's sister lived in some European country then C. they would certainly visit Venice, Budapest, Rome, Sorrento and Florence D. the preparation for the journey cost them hours 答案与解析 C 参见第一段最终一句话,其大意是:有很多地方想去,由于时间有限,又不得不尽量削减;但是Venice, Budapest, Rome, Sorrento and Florence这几个城市怎么也不能削减(narrow down)。 D An American woman Anna Jarvis was the first person to decide the mothers should have a holiday in their honor each year. Miss Jarvis started her campaign in 1906 in her home city Philadelphia. She wrote thousands of letters to congressmen(国会议员), city officials, teachers and newspaper publishers, proposing an official holiday for mothers. She traveled all over America, trying to get support for the idea. Her battle went on for years. In 1914, the Congress declared the second Sunday in May each year as Mother's Day. Anna Jarvis wanted Mother's Day to be a simple event. She thought children could honor their mothers by spending some time with them as an act of love and respect. However, the holiday turned out to be a major event for department stores, flower shops and greetingcard industry, which Miss Jarvis didn't like. Americans spend millions of dollars on gifts for their mothers on this day. Younger children often try to
