So they organized a training school. They adopted an activity curriculum (课程) consisting of running, climbing, swimming and flying. To make it easier to manage the curriculum, all the animals took all the subjects. The duck was excellent in swimming, in fact, better than his instructor, but he made only passing grades in flying and was very poor in running. Since he was slow in running, he had to stay after school and also drop swimming in order to practice running. This was kept up until his webbed (脚蹼) feet were badly worn and he was only average in swimming. But average was acceptable in school, so nobody worried about that except the duck. The rabbit started at the top of the class in running, but had a nervous breakdown because of so much make-up work in swimming. The squirrel was excellent in climbing until he developed frustration in the flying class where his teacher made him start from the ground up instead of from the treetop down. He also developed a “charley horse”(肌肉痉挛)and then got a C in climbing and a D in running. The eagle was a problem child and was disciplined severely. In the climbing class he beat all the others to the top of the tree, but insisted on using his own way to get there. At the end of the year, an abnormal eel (鳗) that could swim very well, and also run, climb and fly a little, had the highest average and was the one who gave a good-bye speech. The prairie dogs stayed out of the school because the administration would not add digging to the curriculum. 21.Why was the duck only average in swimming? Because ________. A. he was better his instructor. B. he dropped swimming classes. C. he over-trained himself in running. D. he had to practice climbing. 22.We can learn from the passage that ________. A. the squirrel met frustration during practicing climbing. B. the abnormal eel’s average score is the highest in all subjects. C. the rabbit liked to make up in water so she failed at last. D. in fact, the duck did better than any other animal in class. 23.What’s the reason that the eagle was disciplined? A. He didn’t do as teachers taught. B. He beat all to become the best. C. He had problems in climbing. D. He decided to climb to the top of the tree. 24.What activity curriculums were not offered in this training school? A. Running B. Swimming C. Digging D. Flying B Beginning college is exciting: new ideas to explore, new challenges to be met and many decisions to be made; your future begins here. However, you will find college life is different from your previous school environment. Many of us can be easily defeated by the details of running a well-balanced life. While some of us may have the know-how, I guess there are more of us who can benefit from learning about the experiences of others who have walked the college halls before you. The following you may find useful about life on campus: • Plan well. There are so many new things to do at a new college or university. Give yourself time to make new friends and became familiar with the campus, but don’t forget why you are there. Give some time for social activities and manage your time wisely. • If you don’t have a “system” for planning your time now (like a day timer, a potable data book), get one. Most of all, don’t depend on your memory. • Don’t miss the guidelines. The restrictions, rules and regulations of all kinds can usually be found in your student’s handbook. Consider them well-balanced food for thought. What dates are important? What pieces of paper need to be handed in? What can / can’t you do in your student residence (住处)? Who has the right for what? What do you need to complete to graduate? • Write the word “STUDY” on the walls of your bedroom and bathroom, and maybe it will help to write it on a piece of paper and stick it on the telephone, TV and the kitchen table. Consider this — you are paying thousands of dollars for your course. You pay every time you have to repeat or replace a course. • Build your identity. This is the time for you to decide what to do and what not to do. Take as much time as you need to explore new ideas. Do not be afraid of the beyond. This is learning to make good choices. 25. What is the main purpose of the passage? A. To explain why college life is exciting. B. To offer advice on college life. C. To describe the importance of college life. D. To persuade you to go to college. 26. According to the passage, why is it exciting to begin college life? A. Because you will learn a lot of knowledge. B. Because you will no longer be afraid of challenges. C. Because you get yourself prepared for your future career and life there. D. Because you will make important decisions. 27. The underlined word “know-how” refers to _________. A. an understanding of college regulations. B. a brand-new environment. C. college rules and regulations. D. practical knowledge concerning college life. 28. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? A. college students needn’t learn from those who went to college before them. B. college students should spend as much time as possible on social activities. C. college students should know what they have rights for on campus. D. college students don’t need to pay if they repeat or replace a course. C No one knows exactly how many disabled people there are in the world, but estimates(猜想) suggest the figure is over 450 million. The number of disabled people in India alone is probably more than double the total population of Canada. In the United Kingdom, about one in ten people have some disability. Disability is not just something that happens to other people: as we get older, many of us will become less mobile, hard of hearing or have falling eyesight. Disablement can take many forms and occur at any time of life. Some people are born with disabilities. Many others become disabled as they get older. There are many progressive disabling diseases. The longer time goes on,the worse they become. Some people are disabled in accidents. Many others may have a period of disability in the form of a mental illness. All are affected by people’s attitude towards them. Disabled people face many physical barriers(障碍). Next time you go shopping or to work or to visit friends, imagine how you would manage if you could not get up steps, or onto buses and trains. How would you cope if you could not see where you were going or could not hear the traffic? But there are other barriers:Prejudice(偏见)can be even harder to break down and ignorance inevitably represents by far the greatest barrier of all. It is almost impossible for the able-bodied to fully appreciate what the severely disabled go through,so it is important to draw attention to these barriers and show that it is the individual person and their ability, not their disability, which counts. 29.The underlined word “cope” in paragraph 4 can be best replaced by __________. A. manage B. know C. live D. move 30.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage? A. Even the able-bodied may lose some of their body functions when they get older. B. There are about 10 percent disabled persons in the UK. C. The whole society should pay due attention to the barriers faced by the disabled people. D. Prejudice is so far the greatest barrier of all. 31.It can be concluded from the passage that______ . A. we should try our best to prevent disablement. B. both physical and mental barriers are hard to break down. C. we must take a proper attitude towards the disabled. D. the able-bodied people will never fully understand the disabled. This will help your kids to learn to schedule their day and will give them a sense of control over how they spend their time. Allow them to study in block of time, such as for half an hour with a five-minute break in the middle. 37 Ideal study times are after dinner or right after school before dinner. Never allow your children to study in front of the television, as that will encourage passive activity. 38 You'll also need to help your kids find the right place to study. After you've set up a good study time for little learners, set up a good place where they can study in peace. 39 Make sure there is a table or a desk and a comfortable chair. 40 This includes helping them out with their homework sometimes and being there for them with the answers to any questions. The input you give your children during study periods will help form a bond and help make study enjoyable. A. Hold them to the schedule they create for themselves. B. Finally, spend time with your kids when they're studying. C. Keep the atmosphere light and offer lots of encouragement, too. D. Instead, use TV as a treat or a reward when the homework is completed.
