Most people who live abroad for a period experience difficulties in adjusting to(适应) the new culture. This is commonly called "culture shock". The term "culture shock" was introduced for the first time in 1958 to describe the worries produced when a person moves to a completely new environment.
In order to understand culture shock, one must remember that our ability to work in the world depends on our capacity (能力) to read hundreds of signs and behave according to countless(无数的) different kinds of rules. At home we know how to read street signs, how to use the telephone, and how to order dishes. Much of what we do in our daily life is easy and requires little thought.
Abroad, simple tasks become difficult because we don't know how to behave. Our actions and words don't get the expected responses, and we don't understand the messages we are getting: We are facing new ways of thinking, valuing, and doing things. Sometimes, our common sense is no longer useful. This disorientation (迷惘) that can cause serious stress is culture shock. Luckily, culture shock is manageable. If we are prepared for it, we can do something to reduce its effects.
Culture shock is a cycle of adjustment that may take a lot of time. The cycle has four basic periods, and most people experience at least two periods during their stay abroad. However, the length and seriousness of these periods are different for different people, and culture shock can even make one develop a better understanding of himself or herself.

B
We convince (使相信) ourselves that life will be better after we get married and have a baby. But then we are annoyed that the kids aren’t old enough and we'll be happier when they are older.
After that, we're annoyed that we have teenagers to deal with. We will certainly be happy when they are out of that stage. We often think that our life will be complete when we get a nicer car and when we retire. The truth is, there's no better time to be happy than right now. If not now, when?
Your life will always be filled with challenges. It's best to admit this and to be happy anyway.
One of my favourite quotes (名言) comes from Alfred D. Souse. He said, “For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin — real life. But there were always some obstacles (阻碍) in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, or a debt (债务) to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned (开始清楚) on me that these obstacles were my life.”
These words have helped me to see that there is no way to happiness and happiness is the way. So, treasure every moment that you have and treasure it more because you share it with someone special, special enough to spend your time, and remember that time waits for no one.

Exchange students will experience culture shock abroad. They may feel lonely when they are adjusting to a new environment. Then how do they adapt to a new culture and avoid the culture shock?
Try to learn about the host culture before leaving. Learn about everyday life in the host country. Eat the food in the host country and adjust to the dishes. In addition to learning the language well, watch films and listen to the music there.
Upon arrival, develop a daily routine(常规) as quickly as possible. Develop a sleep schedule, eat healthily and exercise at regular times. Find favorite local coffee shops and parks to avoid culture shock that can arise because of the complete loss of controlling over life.
Remain relationships with family and friends at home through the Internet, letters and emails. Share your experiences and photos with them. Building new friendships in the host culture can also be important. Be friendly and invite friends, schoolmates or neighbors to go walking or out for coffee.
Keep a positive (积极乐观的) attitude. Living in a foreign country is an important opportunity full of excitement and challenges. Though it may seem difficult, try to live and study like a student in the host country. Accept new food and traditions with an open mind.
