Have you ever been sad because of failure? Please remember, for often, achieving what you set out to do is not the most important thing.
A boy decided to dig a deep hole behind his house. As he was working, a couple of older boys stopped by to watch. “What are doing? ” asked one of the visitors. “I want to dig a hole all the way through the earth!” the boy answered excitedly. The older boys began to laugh, telling him that digging a hole all the way through the earth was impossible. After a while, the boy picked up a jar. He showed it to the visitors. It was full of all kinds of stones and insects. Then he said calmly and confidently, “Maybe I can’t finish digging all the way through the earth, but look at what I’ve found during this period!”
The boy’s goal was far too difficult, but it did cause him to go on. And that is what a goal is for-to cause us to move in the direction we have chosen, in other words, to cause us to keep working!
Not every goal will be fully achieved. Not every job will end up with a success. Not every dream will come true. But when you fall short of your aim, maybe you can say, “Yes, but look at what I’ve found along the way! There are so many wonderful things having come into my life because I tried to do something!” It is in the digging that life is lived. It is the unexpected joy on the journey that really makes sense.
21. The older boys laughed at the boy because he was thought to be .
A. brave B. impolite C. foolish D. warm-hearted
22. Why did the boy show the jar to the older boys?

D. To attract them to join him in the work.
23. What can be learnt from the fourth paragraph of the text?
A. Not dream can come true. B. All work will end successfully.
C. Goals shouldn’t be set too high. D. Goals will make us work harder.
24. The best title for the text should be .
A. Joy in the Journey B. A Boy Dug a Hole
C. No Pains, No Gains D. Failure Is the Mother of Success

Football is, I believe, the most popular game in England: one has only to go to the important matches to see this. Rich and poor, young and old, one can see them all there, shouting for one side or the other. To a stranger, one of the most surprising things about football in England is the great knowledge of the game which even the smallest boy seems to have. He can tell you the names of the players in most of the important teams. He will tell you who he expects will win such a match, and his opinion is usually as good as that of men three or four times his age.
Most schools in England take football seriously-much more seriously than nearly all European schools, where lessons are all very important and games are left for the children themselves. In England it is believed that education is not only a matter filling a boy’s mind with facts in the classroom: education also means the training of character; and one of the best ways of training character is by means of games, especially team games; where a boy or girl has to learn to work with others for his or her team, instead of working for oneself alone. The school therefore plans games and matches for its students. Football is a good team game. It is good both for the body and the mind. That’s why it is every school’s game in England.
25. In passage 1, by “this” the author means ________.
A. people often go to football games.
B. people, rich and poor, young and old, play football
C. football is the most popular game in England
D. people usually shout at each other in a football match
26. In England school boys seem _________ about football games.
A. not to know much B. to know a great deal
C. know little D. know nothing
27. In England, a boy’s opinion of a match is often ________.
A. three or four times better than that of adults
B. worse than that of adults
C. as good as that of adults
D. worth considering three or four times than adults
28. In England, education means_______.
A. filling a boy’s mind with stories
B. more than the teaching of knowledge
C. the teaching of knowledge only
D. training character by means of football games

Some time ago I discovered that one of my chairs had a broken leg. I didn’t think there would be any difficulty in getting it mended, as there are a whole lot of antique(古董) shops near my home. So I left home one morning carrying the chair with me. I went into the first shop expecting a friendly reception(接待). I was quite wrong. The man wouldn't even look at my chair.
The second shop, though slightly more polite, was just the same, and the third and the fourth—so I decided that my approach must be wrong.
I entered the fifth shop with a plan in my mind. I placed the chair on the floor and said to the shopkeeper, “Would you like to buy a chair?” “Twenty pounds,” I said. “OK,” he said. “I’ll give you twenty pounds.” “It’s got a slightly broken leg,” I said.” Yes, I saw that. It’s nothing.”
Everything was going according to plan and I was getting excited. “What will you do with it?” I asked. “Oh, it will be easy to sell once the repair is done.” “I'll buy it,” I said. “What do you mean?” “You've just sold it to me,” he said. “Yes, I know but I've changed my mind. I am sorry. I'll give you twenty-seven pounds for it.” “You must be crazy,” he said. Then, suddenly the penny dropped. “I know what you want. You want me to repair your chair.” “You're right,” I said. “And what would you have done if I had walked in and said, ‘Would you mend this chair for me?’” “I wouldn't have agreed to do it,” he said. “We don't do repairs, not enough money in it and too much trouble. But I'll mend this for you, shall we say for a fiver?” He was a very nice man and was greatly amused by the whole thing.
29.We can learn from the text that in the first shop the writer_________.
A. was rather impolite B. was warmly received
C. asked the shopkeeper to buy his chair D. asked the shopkeeper to repair his chair
30.The expression “the penny dropped” in the last paragraph means the shopkeeper ____.
A. changed his mind B. accepted the offer
C. saw the writer's purpose D. decided to help the writer
31.From the text, we can learn that the writer was _________.
A. honest B. careful C. smart D. funny

It’s great fun to explore(探索)new places---it feels like an adventure, even when you know you’re not the first to have been there. But make sure not to get lost or waste time going round in circles.
● Do the map reading if you're being driven somewhere. It'll be easier if you keep turning the map so it follows the direction you' re traveling in. Keep looking ahead so that you can give the driver lots of warning before having to make a turn, or you'll have to move to the back seat.
● Get a group of friends together and go exploring. You'll need a good map, a compass (指南针), a raincoat, a cell phone to call for help in case you get lost, and a bit of spare cash for emergencies (应急现金). Tell someone where you're going before you set out and let them know what time you expect to be back. The test is in not getting lost, not in seeing how fast you can go, so always stick together, waiting for slower friends to catch up.
● See if your school or a club organizes orienteering activities, in which you need a map and a compass to find your way. This can be done as a sport, with teams trying to find the way from A to B (and B to C, etc. ) in the fastest time, or simply as a spare-time activity. Either way, it's not only good fun, but a great way to keep fit.

A. direct the driver when necessary
B. look ahead to see where there's a turn
C. move to the back seat if feeling uncomfortable
D. keep looking at the map to find a place to go to
33. Why do you need to tell someone your exploration plan before setting out?
A. To get information when in danger.
B. To be saved in case of an accident.
C. To share the fun with him/her in exploration.
D. To tell him/her what's going on with the group members.
34. Orienteering activities can ________.
A. make people work fast B. help people stay healthy
C. help people organize other activities D. make people get prepared for sports
35. The text mainly talks about________.
A. the fun of exploration B. what to bring for exploration
C. the way to use the map in exploration D. how to prevent getting lost in exploration
