(2016·青岛高三自主诊断)My dad is the kind of parent that has to know where I am and what time I’ll be home. He is strict with me because he cares about me more than anything in the world. My dad’s strictness comes from the way he was raised. He grew up working long hours on his family farm and his dad would throw wooden boards at him when he did something wrong. In high school, my dad woke up at four in the morning to get his chores (日常杂务) done and walked to school so that he would make it to basketball practice by five. After school he went home to start a long night of chores.
On top of all the responsibilities my dad had at home, he played three sports and went to school. School would have been easy, but my dad had dyslexia (诵读困难).Every teacher my dad had thought that he was just unable to learn. My dad struggled in school until one teacher took the time to sit down and teach him how to read and write. To this day my dad tells me how grateful he is to that teacher who gave him a chance.
The best part about my dad is his attitude toward our family. When he comes home from a terrible day at work, he always puts a smile on his face because he knows the family is a lot more important than his own problems.
I know that I get my best qualities from my dad. He has shown me that with hard work I can accomplish something, and have fun while doing it. I know that my dad has strict rules because he loves me and wants me to learn responsibility.

(2016·济南市教学质量调研考试)The Netherlands on Monday launched its firstever “intelligent bicycle”, fitted with a set of electronic devices to help bring down the high accident rate among elderly cyclists in this country.
The intelligent bicycle runs on electricity. Its seat shakes when other cyclists approach from behind, while the handlebars do the same when obstacles appear ahead to inform cyclists to pay attention to the danger. It also has a cradle (置物架) in which a computer can be inserted, to wirelessly connect and “talk” to the bicycle through a particular application. The computer also flashes a bright signal if there is an approaching obstacle in the bicycle’s path, like a tree, or if another cyclist comes up from behind intending to pass.
A commercialavailable bicycle is expected to be on the market in the next two years and should sell for between 1,700 euros to 3,200 euros per bicycle. It weighs about 55 pounds but researchers are working on making the onboard systems smaller.
“Accidents often happen when cyclists look behind them or get a fright when they are passed at high speed,”said Maurice Kwakkernaat, one of the scientists involved in the project, “The onboard system technology has already been at work in the automotive industry.”
“More and more elderly people are using a bicycle, not only for short distances, but also for longer distances,”Dutch Environment Minister Melanie Schultz van Haegen said.“This type of bicycle is truly needed in the Netherlands because it will help us bring down the number of elderly people who are injured every year and allow them to continue enjoying cycling,” she said.

(2016·辽宁省实验中学阶段性测试)Educating girls quite possibly outputs a higher rate of return than any other investment (投资) available in the developing world. Women’s education may be an unusual field for economists, but raising women’s contribution to development is actually as much an economic as a social problem. And economics, with its emphasis on motivation, provides an explanation for why so many girls can’t receive education.
Parents in lowincome countries fail to invest in their daughters because they do not expect them to make an economic contribution to the family: girls grow up only to marry into somebody else’s family and bear children. Girls are thus seen as less valuable than boys and are kept at home to do housework while their brothers are sent to school — the_prediction_becomes_selffulfilling,_trapping women in a vicious circle (恶性循环) of lack of attention.
An educated mother, on the other hand, has greater earning abilities outside the home and faces an entirely different set of choices. She is likely to have fewer but healthier children and can insist on the development of all her children, ensuring that her daughters are given a fair chance. The education of her daughters then makes it much more likely that the next generation of girls, as well as of boys, will be educated and healthy. The vicious circle is thus transformed into a good circle.
Few will disagree with it that educating women has great social benefits. But it has huge economic advantages as well. Most obviously, there is the direct effect of education on the wages of female workers. Wages rise by 10 to 20 per cent for each extra year of schooling. Such big returns are impressive by the standard of other available investments, but they are just the beginning. Educating women also has an important influence on health practices, including family planning.

Kids usually learn sportsmanship — good and bad — from the adults in their lives.__2__ If parents and coaches show disrespect to other fans, referees, or each other, kids will likely act the same way on the field.
__3__ Some of them are very basic and easy to do, like shaking hands with other players before a game. Other examples may take a little more courage, such as acknowledging a great play made by the opposing team.
Learning good sportsmanship is important because it helps you develop an attitude of graciousness (礼貌) and respect that will carry over into all the other areas of your life.__4__ Being a good sport in the classroom will eventually lead to being a good sport in the workplace.
So be a good sport in whatever you do!__5__ When others see you acting in a way that makes it clear that winning isn’t the most important thing, you can move on to focusing on the important things, like having fun, getting exercise, and improving your skills!
