In England recently three foreign gentlemen came to a bus stop and waited. About five minutes later, the bus they wanted came along. They were just going to get on when suddenly there was a loud noise behind them. People rushed onto the bus and tried to push them out of the way. Someone shouted at them. The bus conductor came rushing down the stairs to see what all the trouble was about. The three foreigners seem all at sea and looked embarrassed. No one had told them about the British custom of lining up for a bus that the first person who arrives at the bus stop is the first person to get on the bus.
Learning the language of a country isn't enough. If you want to have a pleasant visit, find out as much as possible about the manners and customs of your host country. You will probably be surprised just how different they can be from your own. A visitor to India would do well to remember that people there consider it impolite to use the left hand for passing food at table. The left hand is supposed to be used for washing yourself. Also in India, you might see a man shaking his head at another to show that he doesn't agree. But in many parts of India a shake of the head means agreement. Nodding (点头) your head when you are given a drink in Bulgaria(保加利亚) will most probably leave you thirsty(口渴的).

What does an astronaut(宇航员)eat in space? This is a question that will puzzle many, as people rarely think of that. In the early space-travel years, astronauts ate dehydrated (脱水的)foods that were eaten through straws (吸管). In today’s space-age, the food that they eat is totally different. They eat food in the same way as people do on Earth.
Astronauts are able to prepare and eat a variety of foods in space. Some can be eaten in their natural form, like fruits, while some need to add water, like noodles. However, there are no refrigerators, so the food has to be prepared and eaten without being stored for a long time. When the astronauts are hungry, they simply eat the food by opening the food packages and with a fork, knife, and spoon.
Just like people on Earth, astronauts also eat three meals a day which include breakfast, lunch and dinner. Sometimes they also eat snacks. The US space agency NASA has found out that an astronaut’s diet reduces by about 70% on a space mission(任务), though he has a wide range of foods to choose from like nuts, chicken, beef, seafood, and candies. Drinks in the spaceship include coffee, tea, juices, and lemonade.
Astronauts can also request a particular food that they would like to have in space. Scientists are always experimenting and trying out different space foods that can be offered to astronauts when on space missions.
45. Now astronauts eat ________ in space.
A. dehydrated (脱水的) foods B. food as people do on Earth

Desertification, the name for what happens when farmable land is turned into desert, is a growing world problem. The United Nations and its member countries are working hard to fight against desertification.
The United Nations has taken many steps to stop the process of desertification, including encouraging farmers to build fences, and providing money for people in dry areas to plant more trees and bushes. This is one of the cheapest and most effective ways of decreasing desertification.
There is also another resource in the fight against desertification, in the form of the China National Desertification Monitoring Center (CNDMC). The center has been working to help with anti-desertification measures and doing scientific projects to find pout what the problems are and how to solve them.
In addition, there are many things that everyone can do to help stop desertification. These include better management of areas that are likely to turn into desert and training people in responsible water usage. There are also things that can be done at a national or international level, such as sharing information and solutions between countries and using satellites to pick out areas likely to be affected by desertification.
