The Renaissance is traced back to rich Italian cities such as Florence,Milan, and Venice. In these cities businessmen started to spend their extra money on things like painting and education, and to consider new techniques of banking and systems of government.A new type of scholar, the humanist(人文主义者) arose.Humanism was concerned with humankind and culture.Latin and Greek, literature and philosophy, music and mathematics were among the subjects humanists studied. The Renaissance gave rise to new forms of painting and sculpture.During the Renaissance, artists were no longer regarded as mere artisans (工匠).Many artists drew on mathematics in order to become more accurate in their measurements(度量) and to make sure an object was presented in realistic proportions. They also studied the way light hits objects and the ways our eyes perceive(注意到) it.A new kind of paint, called oil paint, was invented. The Renaissance affected all of the society. Many people became interested in politics, and the world outside their towns. They became explorers, businessmen, etc. The effect on religion was especially strong. In the Middle Ages people were primarily concerned with serving the church and getting to heaven. But the increase in arts and education gave people things to look forward to in life, and made them lose interest in the church. The Renaissance produced many great minds.Leonardo da Vinci was one of the greatest, although he was not regarded that way at the time.Among his many works of art were The Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. He is also regarded as a great inventor, and is credited for coming up with the idea of the helicopter. 1.According to the second paragraph, the Renaissance . Dixie Dansercoer, who crossed the southern continent in 1997,and 26yearold Sam Deltour aim to take advantage of the specific wind patterns around the continent to cover large distances using kites to help sail their heavy sleds (雪橇) across the ice and snow. This will allow them to travel up to 300 km in a day and an average of 60 km,to break the current world record of Norwegian Rune Gjeldnes who travelled 4,800 kilometers in 90 days five years ago. “It would be impossible if we had to pull the sleds all by ourselves,”Dansercoer, who will start his expedition on November 4,explained at a news conference on Tuesday. The pair will each have a sled weighing 190 kg,which will contain food supplies, tents, kites and scientific equipment.During their trip they will measure wind patterns and supply information about the quality of the ice they encounter to scientists studying climate change back in Belgium. As they will have no new supplies from the outside, the largest part of their luggage consists of frozen food to provide each of them with the crucial 5,000 calories needed each day to undertake such a physically challenging trip. For Deltour, being a polar explorer became his dream after he discovered a book about the first polar expeditions in his local library as a 12yearold.He said he was aware that exploration was no easy task. Dansercoer and Deltour plan to reach the South Pole around December 14,100 years to the day after Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen became the first to set foot there.Amundsen reached the South Pole in 1911. 5.How will the two explorers travel? A. They will pull the sleds all by themselves. B.They will use kites to help pull the sleds. C.They will use kites instead of sleds. D.They will pull the sleds at first and use only kites later. 根据第二段的“take advantage of the specific wind patterns around the continent to cover large distances using kites to help sail their heavy sleds(雪橇)”可知答案。 B 6.We can learn from the passage that the two explorers . A.both have reached the South Pole before B.have people to help them along the journey C.have some scientific research tasks along the journey D.will publicize their findings along the journey 【解析】 推理判断题。从第五段的“During their trip they will measure wind patterns and supply information about the quality of the ice they encounter to scientists studying climate change back in Belgium.” C 7.To Sam Deltour, the upcoming travel to the South Pole is something that . A. he is eager to do B.he is afraid of C.he has never expected D.he has tried to avoid 【解析】 推理判断题。从第七段的“For Deltour, being a polar explorer became his dream after he discovered a book about the first polar expeditions in his local library as a 12yearold.” A C We've colonised most of the world, but one vast stretch of the planet remains beyond our grasp: Antarctica. This frozen continent at the end of the earth has never been permanently occupied by man.Even if you're travelling there on a cruise ship,as most people do,the solitude(孤独)and the emptiness will envelop you. Not that solitude is the first thing that comes to mind when you're standing in the middle of a penguin colony on an Antarctic shoreline. When I visited in early February, there were thousands of birds packed tightly on every rock, both shy gentoo penguins and the bolder adélie penguins. They seemed happy to see us wandering among them; our cameras clicked crazily at the grey fluffball chicks who are tapping their parents' beaks (鸟嘴) to be fed. But penguins are by no means the only stars of the show here.I found it equally exciting to see a wandering albatross (信天翁) circling above our ship, dipping its great wings into the rolling waters of the Drake Passage.Or fat elephant seals rest on the beach in a soup of algae (海藻),shouting at each other like elderly members of a gentlemen's club. Most exciting of all, though, were the whales. As the call went up from the bridge of our ship —“Humpbacks!”—we spotted three of them leaping from the water, their magnificent tails emerging and dipping as if in slow motion,so close that we could see their great heads, their eyes and blowholes. Just as vast and attractive are the icebergs. The glassy world of the Weddell Sea is a fantastic picture of icy skyscrapers stretching to the horizon. Some are whipped by wind and water into fantastical shapes—oriental palaces, ruined fortresses,an Art Deco cinema. All of the above is exactly what makes a voyage here so extraordinary.A journey to Antarctica is a travel experience as special as you can have. 8.We can infer from Paragraph 2 that penguins . A.are mostly shy B.are not afraid of humans C.dislike the presence of humans D.hide their chicks from humans 【解析】 推理判断题。根据第二段“They seemed happy to see us wandering among them...” B 9.What is the most exciting in Antarctica, according to the author? A.Penguins. B.The whales. C.The icebergs. D.Elephant seals. 从文章第四段第一句“Most exciting of all, though, were the whales.” B 10.Which of the following is TRUE about the icebergs? A.They lack attraction. B.They look cold and lifeless. C.They are huge and frightening. D.They are beautiful and in different shapes. D 11.Where does the passage probably come from? A.An ad. B.A news story. C.A travel journal. D.A research paper. 纵观全文,特别是文章最后一句“A journey to Antarctica is a travel experience as special as you can have.” C D While every dog owner knows their dogs can read their moods perfectly. Scientists have always been a little doubtful. Now thanks to some researchers at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna, Austria,we finally have some convincing evidence. For their study, biologist Corsin Miller and his team exposed eleven selected dogs to digital images of women that were either angry or happy.Half the dogs were rewarded for touching the screen when shown a happy face, while the other half got their treat for selecting those that appeared angry. Interestingly, the dogs were not provided with the entire face. Some dogs were shown only upper halves while the others observed lower halves. That's because the scientists believe humans show their emotions on their entire face. After some training like how to recognize small differences like the wrinkles between the eyes or the changes in their shape that accompany the happy or angry expressions, the dogs were mostly able to identify the correct expression not only on a familiar face but on a strange face. The researchers concluded the dogs were smart enough to read human emotions. They also found those being trained to read angry expressions took a longer time to learn. They guess it may be because dogs find angry faces disgusting, causing them to withdraw quickly. However, once the smart dogs realized they were getting rewarded, the trepidation seemed to disappear. In fact, the dogs had such a good time playing the computer “game”that scientists had a hard time keeping them away from the touchscreens after the study was completed. The researchers also noticed only dogs with a male owner had a harder time understanding the expressions correctly.Since the touchscreen models were all females, this confirmed what has been observed in previous dog studies—dogs are more efficient at reading facial expressions of people that are the same gender as their owner. 12.How did the scientists conduct the experiment? A.By leaving dogs to women who are either happy or angry. B.By mixing the selected dogs together. C.By rewarding only half of the dogs touching the screen. D.By showing digital pictures of women's happy or angry faces. 根据文章第二段的第一句话“For their study, biologist Corsin Miller and his team exposed eleven selected dogs to digital images of women that were either angry or happy”可知选项D与文章说法吻合,故选D。 D 13.Which of the following statements is TRUE? A.The dogs were not all provided with the entire face. B.According to their size, the dogs were given either upper or lower halves. C.The dogs could read even small changes that accompany facial expressions after some training. D.The dogs couldn't read strangers' facial emotions. 根据文章第四段的第一句“After some training like how to recognize small differences like the wrinkles between the eyes or the changes in their shape that accompany the happy or angry expressions, the dogs were mostly able to identify the correct expression not only on a familiar face but on a strange face”可知狗在被训练之后甚至能够读出人的脸部表情的细微变化。故选C。 C 14.The underlined word“trepidation”in Paragraph 5 probably means . A.horror B.curiosity C.excitement D.doubt 【解析】 词义猜测题。根据该单词前文“They guess it may be because dogs find angry faces disgusting, causing them to withdraw quickly.” 故选A。 A 15.How might the results change if the dogs with female owners are shown pictures of male faces? A.They could only tell emotions on partial faces rather than on entire faces. B.They found it hard to tell the moods on the faces of a different gender. C.They found it easy to tell the emotions on the entire face. D.They would be scared away at the sight of the pictures. 根据文章最后一段的第二句话“Since the touchscreen models were all females, this confirmed what has been observed in previous dog studies—dogs are more efficient at reading facial expressions of people that are the same gender as their owner.” 阅读填句(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) How to communicate effectively Effective communication is a must for everyone who hopes to be successful. It helps express your thoughts and improves your career prospects (前景) as well as strengthens relationships. Therefore,it's necessary to work hard to improve your communication skills. 16 Before you are ready to talk to a group of people, you should think about what you are going to talk about.Although a printed copy of a speech may not be always necessary, highlighting a few important issues in your mind is a must. 17 And it reduces the possibilities of getting away from the main issues. Choose your words Choice of words is the most important part of any communication.Simple, clear words are appropriate for the issue you are discussing.Needless to say, words that could make your audience unpleasant are best kept out of the communication. Most people tend to be careful about their language
