Australia has passed regulations that will enable more international students to further their education in the country. The new measures were released by the Australian Department of Tertiary Education, Skills, Jobs and Workplace Relations in September.
As a result, the student visa application process for overseas students has been simplified, and the deposit (押金) required to study in Australia has been reduced. Language requirements for overseas students have also been eased.
Also, overseas students receiving a higher education in Australia will be granted a working visa lasting from two to four years after graduation, as long as they meet the basic IELTS requirement.
“This change will definitely make Australia a more attractive destination for Chinese students planning to study overseas,” says Wang Lan, a consultant from Education International Cooperation Group (EIC), a Beijingbased company that provides services to students wishing to study overseas.
However, in the past few years, many of Wang's student clients (客户) could not start studies in Australia because they did not meet the language requirements. Visa processing took a long time and deposit regulations were tough. The change in policy is good news for the parents of students wishing to study in Australia, Wang says.
A 22yearold female student surnamed Li, in Beijing, who is planning to do her postgraduate studies in Australia, learned about the policy change several weeks ago.
“According to the previous deposit requirement for my student visa, my family was required to put down 550,000 yuan ($86,850) . Now we only need to prepare 410,000 yuan. This is a relief for my parents,” Li says.
She also says that the two to four years working visa makes her feel much clearer about her study plans.
“I believe several years of working experience abroad will strengthen my competitiveness when I return to China,” she says. Gaining a competitive advantage is the major reason for Chinese students to study abroad, according to the report by EIC.

Hilversum is a mediumsized city between the major cities of Amsterdam and Utrecht in the Gooi area of North Holland, the Netherlands.Unlike most of the Netherlands,Hilversum is actually in a hilly area with the soil mostly consisting of sand.Once called the Garden of Amsterdam,it still attracts travelers to come over to cycle and walk through the surrounding forests. They visit it for a relaxing day off from the urban madness. For Dutch people,Hilversum is all about textile(纺织) and media industries, and modern architecture.
In history,Hilversum was largely an agricultural area.Daily life was marked by farming, sheep raising and wool production.A railway link to Amsterdam in 1874 attracted rich traders from Amsterdam to Hilversum. They built themselves large villas(别墅) in the wooded surroundings of the town. One of the families moving in was the Brenninkmeijers, currently the wealthiest family of the Netherlands. They moved in after big success in the textile industry and aided a substantial textile industry in Hilversum. But the textile boom lasted only several decades. The last factory closed in the 1960s.
The change to a media economy started in 1920,when the Nederlandse Seintoestellen Fabriek(NSF) established a radio factory in Hilversum. Most radio stations settled in the large villas in the leafy areas of the town.Television gave another push to the local economy.Hilversum became the media capital of the Netherlands, and Dutch television stars moved into the leafy neighborhoods surrounding the town.
In the early 1900s,modern architects W.M.Dudok and J.Duiker placed hundreds of remarkable buildings in Hilversum. These modern architectural masterpieces (杰作) are so many that Hilversum almost feels like an open air museum.Dudok alone shaped most of 20th century Hilversum and approximately 75 buildings still bear his unique characteristics. His masterpiece,Hilversum Town Hall, was built in 19281931.It has wide international fame and is included in many architecture textbooks. The building has a remarkable shape and looks like a combination of “blocks”.Actually, one may start his journey of modern architecture by walking or biking the W.M.Dudok Architectural Route in Hilversum.

Sydney-A shark savaged a schoolboy's leg while he was surfing with his father at a beach in Sydney on February 23. It was the third shark attack along the coast of Australia's largest city in a month.
The 15yearold boy and his father were in the water off Avalon,on Sydney's northern beaches, around dawn when he was attacked. The city's beaches are packed with locals and tourists during the summer months.
“The father heard a scream and turned to see his son trashing (扭动) about in the water,” police said.“Fortunately, the shark swam away and the boy was helped to the shore by his father.”
Lifesaving Club spokesman Nick Miller: “It got him around the top of his left leg and the father came and dragged him out of water.” He said the boy was bleeding heavily when he was brought to the shore. “There was a lot of pain, as you can imagine.” The teenager was airlifted to hospital for treatment for leg injuries.
Police said the bites “cut through to the bone”, but the boy did not appear to have sustained any fractures(骨折). He was in a stable condition now.
Several beaches were closed after the attack. Water police and lifeguards were searching for the shark, while police hoped to identify its species by the shape of the bite marks. But they said it was too early to say what type of shark attacked the boy. “I don't even know if he saw it,” Miller said.
Many shark species live in the waters off Sydney's beaches, but attacks on humans are still relatively rare. However, there were two attacks on successive days earlier this month, one on a navy diver in Sydney harbor, not far from the famous Opera House, and the other on a surfer at the city's worldfamous Bondi beach.
Fishermen say shark numbers are on the rise. There is a ban on commercial fishing in the harbor, which has increased fish stocks. Marine experts also claim environmental protection has created a cleaner environment, attracting sharks closer to shore as they chase fish. Many shark species, including the Great White-the maneater made famous in Steven Spielberg's Jaws-are protected in Australian waters.

To American visitors, Iceland is a very interesting country, partly because it is different in so many ways from what he or she is used to seeing at home. There are quite a few things that are not done,or that do not exist on the island-quite a few “No's”.
There is no pollution, for instance. No dogs are permitted in Reykjavik, the capital. There is no television on Thursdays or during the entire month of July, and only three hours of blackandwhite TV the rest of the time. There is no hard liquor (烈酒) on Wednesdays and no beer at any time. There are no handguns, only one jail of thirtyfive cells (狱室)in the entire land—an admirable figure, even for a small country of 313,376 people.
There is no army, air force or navy. There is no tipping for anything. There are no large stores open on Saturdays or Sundays. Since Iceland is situated just under the Arctic Circle, there is no darkness in summer and no daylight in winter. But thanks to Culf Stream, the climate is rather mild, with temperatures ranging from 34 degrees to 52 degrees in July.
The rules on television, liquor and guns are the result of government decisions. But the absence of pollution is due in great part to the fact that Iceland gets its power from the enormous geyser. They provide all the energy needed by the country. In fact, Iceland uses only 3 percent of all the available power of its hot springs.
Iceland has been described as a democratic independent country where more fish are caught and more books are published per person than anywhere else in the world. The Icelanders have always felt a particular love for literature. They composed their first books in the ninth and tenth centuries AD.These works were poems and tales about the kings, heroes, and heroines of Iceland and Norway. At first, the stories were memorized and passed from generation to generation. They were finally written down between 1140 and 1220.The Icelanders have never stopped writing ever since. “ Rather_shoeless_than_bookless,”they_proudly_say.
