My friend also has two daughters and the lovely 21 were in the bedroom playing a game they called “murder in the dark”. I was outside the room listening to the laughing and shouting 22 my 5-year-old daughter Lottie came out with another of her many classic 23 , “Turn the dark off!” There was a moment’s 24 , then everyone burst into laughter at what she said. What an innocent mistake! 25 , Lottie was having far too much fun to be annoyed by the laughter. 26 on that moment, it struck me that hidden within that sentence there is a deep lesson to be 27 . The mistake that Lottie made was a mistake that 28 of us keep making again and again throughout our lives. Not only individuals, but 29 too make this mistake. For example: The war on terror = turn the dark off. The fight against crime = turn the dark off. Neither of these seems to be 30 very well, nor can they. Why is that? On a personal level also, we often try to deal with 31 emotions such as fear or anger by trying to fight against them. We try to 32 negative thoughts out of our heads. We get more and more frustrated (沮丧的) as we find that trying to fight against them is 33 . Often this leads us to take the only other solution we can think of, which is to suppress (镇压) and 34 that they are there at all. What is our mistake? We are trying to turn the dark off 35 simply turning the light on. The light in this case is love. You cannot get 36 and throw it out of a room, because darkness is just a(n) 37 of light. You cannot do anything with negative emotions either, because they are 38 an absence of love. The only way to deal with negative emotions effectively is to 39 the love. So let’s stop trying to work on things that don’t exist and work to bring more of the one thing that is 40 – love. 21. A. boys B. gentlemen C. women D. ladies 22. A. unless B. when C. after D. while 23. A. lines B. notes C. lessons D. opinions 24. A. shock B. silence C. calmness D. excitement 25. A. Unfortunately B. Strangely C. Fortunately D. Disappointedly 26. A. Thinking of B. Thinking back C. Thinking about D. Thinking out 27. A. learned B. prepared C. taken D. chosen 28. A. few B. several C. many D. none 29. A. nations B. partners C. crowds D. teams 30. A. recovering B. matching C. starting D. working 31. A. complex B. negative C. positive D. mixed 32. A. allow B. make C. force D. let 33. A. necessary B. possible C. unnecessary D. impossible 34. A. deny B. admit C. see D. doubt 35. A. regardless of B. in spite of C. instead of D. in charge of 36. A. light B. love C. darkness D. fear 37. A. circle B. absence C. presence D. flash 38. A. hardly B. partly C. simply D. equally 39. A. turn on B. bring on C. take on D. depend on 40. A Whether their summer was filled with activities or complaints about being bored with nothing to do, kids often have a tough time making the back-to-school transition (转变). As with any new or potentially unsettling situation – like starting school for the first time or entering a new grade or new school – allow kids time to adjust. Remind them that everyone feels a little nervous about the first day of school and that they will fit in soon. Emphasize the positive things about going back to school, such as hanging out with old friends, meeting new classmates, buying cool school supplies, participating in sports and other activities, and showing off the new clothes or snazzy accessories (时髦的配饰) if your child has to wear a uniform. It’s also important to talk to kids about what worries them and offer comfort: Are they afraid they won’t make new friends or get along with their teachers? Is the thought of schoolwork stressing them out? Are they worried about the bully (欺负) from last year? Consider adjusting your own schedule to make the transition smoother. If possible, it’s especially beneficial for parents to be home at the end of the school day for the first week. But many working moms and dads just don’t have that flexibility. Instead, try to arrange your evenings so you can give kids as much time as they need, especially during those first few days. If your child is starting a new school, contact the school before the first day to arrange a visit. And ask if your child can be paired up with another student, or “buddy,” and if you can be connected with other new parents. This will help both of you with the adjustment to new people and surroundings. Some schools give kids maps to use until things become more familiar. To help ease back-to-school anxiety, try to transition kids into a same school-night schedule a few weeks before school starts. Also make sure that they get enough sleep and eat a healthy breakfast, which can help them stay energetic and do better in school. Make sure that they write down the need-to-know information to help them remember details such as their locker combination, what time classes and lunch start and end, their homeroom and classroom numbers, teachers’ and/or bus drivers’ names, etc. Your kids need to use a wall calendar or personal planner to record when homework is due, tests will be given, after-school activities will be held, etc. Help your kids organize and set out what they need the night before–homework and books should be put in their backpacks by the door and clothes should be laid out in their bedrooms. Although it’s normal to be anxious in any new situation, a few kids develop real physical symptoms, such as headaches or stomachaches, associated with the start of school. If you’re concerned that your child’s worries go beyond the normal back-to-school anxiety, speak with your child’s doctor, teacher, or school advisor. 41. Children have a difficult time in the first few school days probably because they __________. A. dislike wearing a uniform B. have to adapt to many new things C. can no longer play with old friends D. feel afraid of meeting new classmates 42. According to the passage, it is recommended that parents set aside the evenings to __________. A. meet other new parents B. visit their children’s teachers C. spend time with their children D. help their children with the homework 43. To help their children adjust to school life, parents should __________. A. buy school maps for their children to use B. take their children to a doctor immediately C. use a wall calendar to record their homework D. talk about the benefits of going back to school 44. The passage is mostly probably taken from a website about __________. A. popular science B. teenage fashion C. kids’ health D. school travel 45. The best title for the passage might be __________. A. Growing Up B. Back to School C. Kids’ Anxiety D. Summer Vacation B Below are some traditional German beer games. Beer Boot Pass A very, very popular game played in Germany is the beer boot pass (Bier Boot), which has gained popularity all over the world. The game is usually played to pin the next round of beers on a person. In this, a full glass of beer is passed around in the group―there are some rules for this―it has to be tipped every time before it is passed and not a drop of beer must be spilled. The second-to-last person who finishes the beer must pay for the next round. The game then becomes all about judgment because either you drink the entire beer or have a sip (一小口) and pass it on. You never know who the second to last person will be, so the uncertainty and excitement makes the game a favorite. Beer Crate-Running This is a traditional game that is extremely popular in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, more popularly referred to as Kastenlauf. The game is similar to running a race, where a route is marked, ranging from anywhere between 5-12 km. Each participant brings a crate of beer (the size and quantity will be specified). The first person who successfully finishes the entire crate of beer before getting to the finish line wins. Flunkyball This outdoor game is played with one team being matched against another, with equal numbers in both. The teams stand on opposite sides of the ground in a line, with their beers lined before them. An empty bottle or a tin can is placed in the center and another object (used as an aim) is brought in, something like a tennis ball. The first team (A) hits the ball onto the target to tumble (打翻) it. Once the bottle has tumbled, team A will start drinking their beers. Meanwhile, team B must run to the center, place the bottle upright, find the ball, and cross back into the line before yelling ‘Stop’. Team A then stops drinking and team B starts to throw the ball at the bottle and carrying forward the game. The game continues till one team has finished all their beer and they are declared winners. Drinking Relay Divide the group of people into two teams and get them to stand in a line with beer placed in front of each member. At the blow of the whistle, the first person lifts the glass and starts drinking the beer. After he is done, he has to turn the glass over to show that there is no more beer in the glass. Then, the next person starts drinking and so on. The next in line can only drink when the first person has emptied his glass. The team whose last member empties the glass ahead of others wins. Herman the German Even though this game seems simple, it is a lot of fun. It runs on the lines of ‘Who stole the cookie’. A person is chosen as ‘Herman the German’ (HTG) and he has to get the game running. The other members sit in a random manner and are given names, better if they are confusing names like China Port No.1, Rum Master Blaster etc. The game starts with HTG saying― “HTG dropped a missile on China Port No. 1, sir” and China Port No.
