Research has discovered not only __1__ dogs the most popular animals of choice to have in the home—dog owners are hardworking early __2__ (rise), and most likely to be married. Meanwhile cat owners are shy, single and messy. Dog owners always say that they are early risers, __3__ cat lovers claim to be night owls. The poll(民意调查) __4__ (conduct) by the UK pet insurer Petplan to celebrate the launch of its Find a Pet website. Each participant was asked to describe__5__(they) in three words. Over half of dog owners described themselves as hardworking,__6__ third said they were outgoing and logical, while a fifth also described themselves as neat. The most common description among cat owners was being introverted (内向的) (21 percent), __7__(follow) by being messy (20 percent) and couch potatoes (13 percent). Rabbit owners were most likely to describe themselves as __8__(create) (56 percent) while a third said they were laidback, and 16 percent admitted to being scatterbrains. The most hardworking dog owners owned German shepherds and the __9__(neat) dog owners had Border terriers. Elsewhere, dogs were most likely to be owned by __10__(marry) men who lived in the countryside, while single females in their twenties owned the most cats. 答案:are 2. 答案:while 4. 答案:was conducted 5. 答案:a/one 7. describe sb./sth.as sth. I am my mother's third child. When I was born, her doctor gently explained to my mother that my left arm was __1__, below the elbow(肘部). Then he gave her some __2__:“Don't treat her any __3__ from the other girls. I only have one hand.” “You get back to peel those potatoes, and don't ever use that as a(n) __8__ for anything again!” Of course I could peel potatoes — with my good hand, while holding them down with my __9__ arm. There was always a __10__, and Mom knew it. “If you try hard __11__,” she'd say, “you can do anything.” Once in the second grade, our teacher had each of us race across the monkey bars (高低杠). When it was my turn, I __12__ my head. Some kids __13__. I went home crying. After work the next afternoon, Mom __14__ me back to the school playground. “Now,__15__ up with your right arm,” she advised. She stood by __16__ I practised, and she __17__ me when I made progress. I'll never forget the __18__ time I was crossing the bars. The kids were standing there with their mouths open. It was the way with everything. When I __19__ I can't handle(处理) things, I see Mom's smile again. She had the heart to __20__ anything. And she taught me I could, too. 1.A.missing B.broken C.diseased D.short 2.A.warning B.medicine C.help D.advice 3.A.badly B.differently C.well D.normally 4.A.did B.refused C.cried D.was 5.A.care B.help C.support D.feed 6.A.pay attention B.work out C.carry out D.help out 7.A.kitchen B.bedroom C.house D.school 8.A.idea B.change C.excuse D.tool 9.A.lost B.other C.next D.longer 10.A.chance B.way C.time D.success 11.A.enough B.too C.again D.often 12.A.hurt B.nodded C.shook D.turned 13.A.cheered B.whispered C.joked D.laughed 14.A.drove B.took C.sent D.carried 15.A.pull B.jump C.stand D.rise 16.A.before B.as C.after D.until 17.A.helped B.raised C.praised D.protected 18.A.first B.last C.wonderful D.next 19.A.admit B.fear C.find D.realize 20.A.face B.teach C.learn D.solve 答案:A 2. 答案:A 5. 解析:从空后的“Mom,I can't peel potatoes”看,“我”从厨房走出来。 答案:A 8.解析:空前的that指代“我”所说的“I only have one hand”“I can't peel potatoes.” 此题容易误选A.chance“机会”。从下文If you try hard enough以及you can do anything可以知道,母亲认为办法(way)总是有的。 答案:A 12. 解析:take sb.to a place意思是“带某人去某地”。 答案:A 16.解析:as在此相当于when或while。 答案:A Ⅲ. In the early 1980s,an American engineer Chuck Hull went to his boss with an idea: to build a machine that prints out things you hold in your hand. His manager told him that the company produced UV lamps, not machines that were able to make copies of things of all kinds. But finally they reached an agreement. Hull would spend the day working on the company's lamps; at night he'd work on his machine. It was the UV lights that gave Hull the idea at first. The lamps were used in factories to harden a plastic veneer(薄片镶饰). Hull realized that he could use UV lights to cut plastic pieces into whatever shape he liked and then pile these pieces to form a 3D thing. Then he had to write programs to tell his machine how to cut each piece. At last, his first 3D printer was put together. But by the mid1980s, the printer had developed into a working product, though it cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Because the printer was too heavy to carry to exhibitions, Hull made home movies to show it to people. “The movies were pretty boring, but even so,” he said, “we got a strong response, especially in Detroit. Back then, the US car industry had been far behind Japan and the car companies were eager for a secret weapon.” The 3D printer was just that: engineers could make their own models for parts such as door handles(把手), rather than sending plans to a tool and die shop, saving months during the design process and thus making their cars more competitive. Now that the technology is becoming affordable, all kinds of people have caught 3D fever. A professor from the University of California is working on printing out an entire house. Another 3D artist has made a robotic hand that lets his son. who was born without several fingers, pick up a water bottle. “Anything that can be made will be made by anyone anywhere,” wrote Joris Peels, a 3D pioneer. “Anyone will be able to 3Dprint a spoon, a truck or a rose.” 1.What was Hull's job? A. An engineer working for a lamp company. B. A worker in a printer company. C. A professor from the University of California. D. A movie maker. 2. Which of the following statements is right according to the passage? A. The 3D printer was made to work by hand. B. Hull asked a company to make a movie about his printer. C. The US car industry was more competitive than that of Japan in the middle 1980s. D. Hull got his idea of printer from the UV lamps. 3.Why didn't Hull carry his printer to the exhibitions? A. Because he didn't want people to know too much about it. B. Because it was too heavy. C. Because it still could not work. D. Because it was too expensive. 4.What does Joris Peels think of the 3D printer? A. It has a bright future. B. It is difficult for people to use. C. It still needs improving. D. It will be used as a powerful weapon. 5.What is the purpose of the passage? A.To introduce an engineer. B. To make us know how the 3D printer was invented. C.To advertise for a printer company. D. To tell us that a lamp company can also make printers. 1.解析:根据第一段中的“an American engineer”和“His manager told him that the company produced UV lamps”可知,Hull是一家生产紫外线灯的公司的工程师。 答案:A 2. 解析:根据第三段第二句中的“Because the printer was too heavy to carry to exhibitions”可知,Hull没有把打印机带到展览会上是因为它太重了。 答案:B 4.解析:根据最后一段“Anything that can be made will be made by anyone anywhere,” wrote Joris Peels可知,它的前景非常好。 答案:A 5.解析:根据第一段an American engineer chuck Hull went to his boss with an idea, to build a machine that prints out things you hold in your hand 及第二、三段都是在讲述3D打印机发明的过程。
