The Brown Bear
My wife Laura and I were on the beach, with three of our children, taking pictures of shore birds near our home in Alaska when we spotted a bear. The bear was thin and small, moving aimlessly. Just a few minutes later, I heard my daughter shouting,
“Dad! The bear is right behind us!” An aggressive bear will usually rush forward to
frighten away its enemy but would suddenly stop at the last minute. This one was
silent and its ears pinned back---- the sign (迹象) of an animal that is going in for the kill. And it was a cold April day. The bear
behaved abnormally, probably because of hunger.
I held my camera tripod (三脚架) in both hands to form a barrier as the bear rushed into me. Its huge head was level with my chest and shoulders, and the tripod stuck across its mouth. It bit down and I
found myself supporting its weight. I knew I would not be able to hold it for long.
Even so, this was a fight I had to win: I was all that stood between the bear and my
family, who would stand little chance of running faster than a brown bear.
The bear hit at the camera, cutting it off the tripod. I raised my left arm to protect my
face; the beast held tightly on the tripod and pressed it into my side. My arm could not move, and I sensed that my bones were going to break.
Drawing back my free hand, I struck the bear as hard as I could for five to six times.
The bear opened its mouth and I grasped its fur, trying to push it away. I was actually wrestling(扭打) with the bear at this point. Then, as suddenly as it had begun, the fight ended. The bear moved back toward the forest, before returning for another attack----- The first
time I felt panic.
Apparently satisfied that we caused no further threat, the bear moved off,
destroying a fence as it went. My arm was injured, but the outcome for us could
hardly have been better. I’m proud that my family reminded clear-headed when panic could have led to a very different outcome.
25. The brown bear approached the family in order to _______.
A. start an attack B. protect the children .
C. set up a barrier for itself D.catch shore birds
26. The bear finally went away after it _______.
A. got injured B. found some food
C. took away the camera D.felt safe
27. The writer and his family survived mainly due to their ______ .
.A. patience B. calmness C. Cautiousness D.pride

Food festivals around the world
Stilton Cheese Rolling
May Day is a traditional day for celebrations, but the 2,000 English villagers of
Stilton must be the only people in the world who include cheese rolling in their annual plans. Teams of four, dressed in a variety of strange and funny clothes , roll a
complete cheese along a 50-metre course. On the way, they must not kick or throw
their cheese, or go into their competitors' lane. Competition is fierce and the chief
prize is a complete Stilton cheese weighing about four kilos (disappointingly, but
understandably the cheeses used in the race are wooden ones). All the competitors
Are served with beer or port wine, the traditional accompaniment for Stilton cheese.
Fiery Foods Festival—The Hottest Festival on Earth
Every year more than 10,000 people head for the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. They come from as far away as Australia, the Caribbean and China, but they all share a common addiction—food that is not just spicy ,but hot enough to make your mouth burn, your head spin and your eyes water. Their destination is the Fiery Food and
BBQ Festival which is held over a period of three days every March. You might like
to try a chocolate-covered habanero pepper—officially the hottest pepper in the world ---- or any one of the thousands of products that are on show. But one thing's for sure—if you don't like the feeling of a burning tongue, this festival isn't for you!
La Tomatina—The World's Biggest Food Fight
On the last Wednesday of every August, the Spanish town of Bunol hosts Ea
Tomatina—the world's largest food fight. A week-long celebration leads up to an
exciting tomato battle as the highlight of the week's events. The early morning sees
the arrival of large trucks with tomatoes—official fight-starters get things going by
casting tomatoes at the crowd.
The battle lasts little more than half an hour, in which time around 50,000 kilograms of tomatoes have been thrown at anyone or anything that moves, runs, or fights back.

D Life can be so wonderful, full of adventure and joy. It can also be full
of challenges, setbacks and heartbreaks. Whatever our circumstances, we
generally still have dreams, hopes and desires—that little something more we want forourselves and our loved ones. Yet knowing we can have more can also create a problem, because when we go to change the way we do things, up come the old patterns and
pitfalls that stopped us from seeking what we wanted in the first place. This tension between what we feel we can have and "what we're
seemingly able to have is the niggling suffering, the anxiety we feel.
This is where we usually think it's easier to just give up. But we're
never meant to let go of the part of us that knows we can have more.
The intelligence behind that knowing is us—the real us. It's the part
that believes in life and its possibilities. If you drop that, you begin to
feel a little "dead" inside because you're dropping "you". So, if we have this capability but somehow life seems to keep us stuck, how do we break these patterns?
Decide on a new course and make one decision at a time. This is good advice for a new adventure or just getting through today's challenges. While, deep down, we know we can do it, our mind—or the minds of those close to us—usually
says we can't. That isn't a reason to stop, it's just the mind, that little man or woman 18
on your shoulder, trying to talk you out of something again. It has done it many times before. It's all about starting simple and doing it now.Decide and act before over thinking. When you do this you may feel a little, or large, release from the jail of your mind and you'll be on your
Way .
32. It can be inferred from the first two paragraphs that we should .
A. be careful when we choose to change B. stick to our dreams under any circumstances
C. be content with what we already have D. slow down and live a simple life
33.What is the key t breaking the old patterns?
A. To decide and take immediate action. B. To listen to those close to us.
C. To think twice before we act. D.To focus on every detail.
34. Which of the following best explains the underlined part in the last paragraph?
A. Realization of your dreams. B. Freedom from your tension.
C. Reduction of your expectations. D.. Escape from your punishment.
35. What does the author intend to tell us?
A. It's important to learn to accept sufferings in life.
B. It's impractical to change our way of thinking.
C. It's harder than we expect to follow a new course.
D. It's easier than we think to get what we want.
