Until March 28, the fate of the gray wolf in the Rocky Mountains was in the hands of the federal government because the wolf was listed as an endangered species. But once it was removed from the list — a decision that is being challenged in court by a dozen conservation groups — the gray wolf fell under the protection of individual states. That is turning out to mean almost no protection at all. Idaho’s Fish and Game department announced last week that it would allow 428 of the state’s estimated 1,000 wolves to die this year. Some will die of natural causes. Most will be killed by hunters. Idaho officials argue that the remaining population will still be larger than the very small number to be protected in the original federal wolf recovery plans. But Idaho’s Fish and Game department has overruled its own staff biologists, who for the good of the wolf population — and the ecosystem(生态系统) as a whole — argued that more animals should be allowed to survive. Sadly, in Idaho, wolves are nothing more than another game animal to be managed for the benefit of human hunters. Beginning on Sept. 15, any Idaho hunter with a hunting license and $10.50 for a wolf tag will be entitled to shoot one wolf, at least until the quota(限额) of dead wolves in his region has been reached. And how will a hunter know if the local quota has been reached? There will be a hot line, of course. Hunters will be encouraged not to shoot wolves wearing radio collars because those wolves are still being studied. Perhaps the solution is to fit all wolves with radio collars. It is still possible that Idaho’s wolves — and the wolves in other states — will get a reprieve. A federal judge will soon decide whether to support or object to the government’s decision to delist the gray wolf. We hope he will restore the wolf to the endangered species list. There is no better proof of how dangerous life is for wolves than Idaho’s plan to protect them.   51. From the first paragraph, we can know that ______. A. The gray wolf was not listed as an endangered species until March 28. B. In the author’s opinion, individual states will not protect the gray wolf well C. The gray wolf fell under the protection of individual states when it was listed as an endangered species. D. It’s up to the federal government to protect the gray wolf after it was removed from the list. 52. Why do Idaho officials permit a certain number of gray wolves to be hunted? A. Some will die of natural causes if they are not killed by hunters. B. Hunters kill gray wolves for the good of the wolf population. C. They argue that more animals should be allowed to survive. D. The wolves left will still be more than those to be protected in the original federal wolf recovery plans. 53. What does the underlined word “reprieve” in the last paragraph mean? A. An official order to put gray wolves back on endangered list. B. An official order to remove the gray wolf from the list of endangered species. C. An official order to permit 428 of the state’s estimated 1,000 wolves to be hunted D. An official order to fit all wolves with radio collars. 54. What does the author think of Idaho’s plan to protect gray wolves? A. Wolves are only a game animal to be managed for the benefit of human hunters. B. There is no better plan to protect gray wolves than Idaho’s plan. C. It will restore the wolf to the endangered species list. D. It’s a danger to the life of the gray wolf. 55. Whose point of view may the author agree to? A. Idaho’s Fish and Game department. B. Idaho’s officials. C. Staff biologists in Idaho’s Fish and Game department. D. The federal judge. 参考答案: BDADC 22. Have you ever seen any students whose trousers hang so low that you can see their underwear? What do you think of that? Fashionable? Some of today’s teenagers are big fans of such a look. But recently this trend has been at the center of an argument in Italian middle schools. The headmaster of a school in central Italy has asked students to stop wearing low-rise jeans that expose underwear and parts of the body. His request came after a class trip, when he saw one boy's baggy trousers slide to his feet. He pointed out that this way of dressing is not suitable for school. But in Italy, a nation that takes fashion very seriously, the suggestion caused a debate among parents, teachers and students. The issue is whether the headmaster's request will limit students' freedom— or whether dress in Italian schools is too casual. A parents' group praised the move in favor of good taste, while others advised schools to stop worrying about fashion and fix up old school buildings. “We do not want to kick fashion out,” the headmaster explained, “but extremes of fashion like this are not right in school.” Many other schools have now requested that their students also stop wearing such trousers. Most students have simply ignored the request. Ludovica Gaudio, 14, wore extremely low trousers exposing orange underwear in class. It was cold, so she wore a matching orange scarf. Another 14-year-old said she would probably respect the request, simply for practical reasons. “I don't really feel comfortable in those sort of jeans,” said Sarah Lattanzi, “in winter, when dressed like that, it's quite cold and I am afraid my stomach will ache.” 【小题1】What led to the argument in Italian middle schools?______ A. Students' craze for fashions.                B. Clothes that are too exposing. C. Students' ignoring dress codes.(规则)     D. Students' underwear. 【小题2】Which of the following supports the headmaster's request?___ A. Fashion should be taken seriously. B. Fashion should not be followed in school. C. Students should have their freedom in choosing what they wear. D. Students should be encouraged to have good taste in clothes. 【小题4】The purpose of this story is to ________ A. show Chinese students that wearing very fashionable clothes in school is under attack in other countries, too. B. show that dress code is necessary even in a country like Italy C. let us see that Italian students react differently to schools' requests. D. tell us that a debate started in Italian middle schools over the way students dress in School 参考答案: BDCD
