However, even an hour is of much valuable. 21. With hospitals and nursing homes tending to thousands of patients every year accidents can---and do ---happen. These incidents whether they are through carelessness or otherwise, can leave patients feeling powerless. That’s not the case.    “There is growing public awareness. People are feeling they have more rights and they have tools in hand to make a complaint,” said Ralph Montano, spokesman for the California Department of Public Health, which regulates hospitals and long term care facilities in the state.     That department received more than 6000 complaints about hospitals in 2007; in the most recent year statistics are available. The complaints can be about mixed-up lab results, medicine errors, foreign objects left in a patient during surgery or a host of other topic.     Similarly, the California Department of Aging received 43000 nursing home complaints in 2009. Some said patient abuse or neglect of patients; others reported missing items. And some commented on the quality of the food.     But finding the channels through them to put forward a complaint can be tiring and time consumption. Many consumers simply don’t bother, and some become lost in the system. Whether the complaint is against a hospital or a long-term care facility, the process is similar--- and many people can help, including the facility’s staff, insurance company representatives and state regulators.     If you want to make a complaint while in the hospital, Patti Harvey, vice president of quality and patient care services for Kaiser Permanente in Southern California, recommends talking with the bedside nurse. If that doesn’t work, you can talk with other people higher in the chain of command, up to the hospital administrator. If the problem isn’t still taken care of ---say you disagree with your treatment plan or have a problem with your doctor---member service offices at each hospital can help address your concerns. 28. Why are there more complaints from patients? A. Because hospitals have more and more rights. B. Because it’s convenient for people to put forward complaints. C. Because in the hospital there are more accidents than before. D. Because there are more departments to deal with complaints. 29. Many consumers don’t make a complaint because ___________________. A. few accidents happen B. it takes time to make a complaint C. many complaints are lost D. complaints are bad for a long-term care facility 30. The last paragraph mainly tells us _____________. A. how to make complaints in the hospital. B. something about Patti Harvey C. to solve problems with the hospital quickly D. we should say we disagree with the treatment plan 31. Who can help if you complain against a hospital or a long term care facility? A. Peter---a medical officer from the government. B. Rudy---a headmaster of a medical university. C. Tom---a teacher of a medical school. D. Jack---a representative of an insurance company. 28.B。解析:细节理解题 根据第二段第一句“There is growing public awareness. People are feeling they have more rights and they have tools in hand to make a complaint,”人们觉得他们有更多的权利和途径来提出自己要抱怨的事情。 29.B。 But finding the channels through them to put forward a complaint can be tiring and time consumption. 30.A。 If you want to make a complaint while in the hospital这是本段的中心句,在医院怎么投诉。 31.D。 Whether the complaint is against a hospital or a long-term care facility, the process is similar--- and many people can help, including the facility’s staff, insurance company representatives and state regulators.故选D。 22. Every year, Lucky and I enter the “Ice Sculpting(冰雕) for Kids” program in our town. Lucky enters to win. I enter to get out of peeling potatoes for our Thanksgiving dinner at home. The program this year took place last week as usual. Everything went along well in the morning. Lucky made a Mayflower and I made a Turkey. However, when we got back after lunch, something unexpected happened. The mainsail of his Mayflower was lying on the table in a puddle of water. I glanced at my Turkey I had made. It had barely begun to melt! “What happened?” I asked. “Did you bump the table when you left?” “No! I just have rotten luck,” he wailed(哀叹), for the rest of the ship he had made began to melt too. “This can’t be just a case of bad luck,” I said, looking around for something that could have caused the destruction. “Something must have happened,” I said. Lucky’s eyes widened. “You think someone did this on purpose?” I shrugged. “Maybe. It makes more sense than bad luck.” Lucky peered around the room. “Hey,” he whispered. “That kid never left the room for the snack break. Maybe he smashed my Mayflower!” I frowned. “I don’t know, Lucky. He doesn’t really seem the type.” “Haven’t you heard the saying ‘Looks can be deceiving’?” Lucky said, his voice rising. “He probably broke my ship while everyone was gone!” I stared at the ruined Mayflower and shook my head. “It doesn’t look broken, though. It looks more…disintegrated(使分解). Lucky, don’t jump to any--” “I’m telling on that kid!” Lucky interrupted. He charged off, his face as red as cranberry sauce. “...conclusions,” I said. With a sigh, I turned to the shipwreck and placed the melting mainsail back in its original spot. I held it there, thinking, until my fingers turned as cold as the ice. “Yeowch!” I said, dropping the mainsail and sticking my frozen fingers into my mouth. It was in that instant that the puzzle was solved. 1. Why does the writer take part in the “Ice Sculpting for Kids” program? A. He wants to beat Lucky to win the prize B. He hates to celebrate the Thanksgiving Day C. He wants to avoid working on Thanksgiving Day D. He wants to peel more potatoes for Thanksgiving Day 2. Why did Lucky rushed to tell on the kid? A. Because the kid damaged Mayflower on purpose B. Because Lucky’s Turkey was damaged by the kid C. Because the kid was away during their snack break D. Because the kid was the suspect who ruined their works 3. Which of the following can best replace the underlined saying “Looks can be deceiving”? A. Not all that glitters is gold B. Never judge a book by its cover C. A fall into a pit, a gain in your wit D. Do as you would be done by 4. What will the following paragraphs probably be about? A. The punishment for the kid B.
