Since the invention of Guitar Hero and similar computer games, it is no longer necessary to imagine what it would be like to play along with the Beatles—you can come together with them in the virtual (虚拟的) world.
Bill Wyman, former bass player(贝斯手) in the Rolling Stones, has pointed out that music video games discourage kids from learning to play real instruments. My own opinion suggest quite opposite.
Last year, I bought Guitar Hero Ⅲ for our 14-year-old son, Jack. Jack quickly mastered the process and entered a hard period of playing the game.
A few months later, while I was away on tour, a couple of his friends came around with a real electric guitar. Playing Guitar Hero had taught them how to play along the track(声道). Now they wanted to see if they could apply that to the real thing. Jack’s friends taught him how to play along to his favorite songs using just his index finger (食指)on the bass string. He got it right away.
Guitar Hero had helped him over the first difficulty for guitar players—how to strum(拨弄) the strings with one hand while making chord(和弦) shapes with the other. He never plays Guitar Hero now, preferring to rock out in the garage with his mates.
Despite my attempts at getting him to learn an instrument, it was Guitar Hero that taught him the basics of playing and built up his confidence to the degree that he was able to make a recognizable sound the first time he played it.
So let’s not complain about a game that encourages kids to become music fans and, in our son’s case, gives them the basic skills needed to learn how to play the guitar.

Endangered languages are languages that wouldn’t exist any longer, much like endangered species of plants or animals. Languages are considered to be endangered when parents are no longer teaching the language to their children and are not using it actively in everyday life. A language is considered to nearly disappear when it is spoken by only a few elderly native speakers.
The world faces a lot of challenges in order to protect different kinds of languages. Of the more than 6,912 languages, half may be in danger of disappearing in the next several decades.
It is caused by many reasons: small numbers of speakers, the regular use of other languages, attitudes towards their languages, moving of the younger population, government policies, and languages used in education and so on. A language may lack important things such as a body of literature, and people who read and write it. A language may also lack prestige (声望) and support of its speakers.
The survival of a language is also threatened when speakers move to other areas where different languages are spoken, or when government policies improve the use of a specific language in school, official business and the media. These situations encourage people to learn the wider-known language and may cause them, especially the young, to stop using their mother tongue. Often those speaking lesser-known languages will choose to learn a more prestigious language with the hope of greater economic opportunities. Most of the world's parents are teaching their children English, French, Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, Russian or some other main languages instead of their own languages for social and economic reasons.

They tell us when to get up or when we’re running late for work and whether we are in danger of missing our favorite TV program. But while our daily activities rely on clocks that tell us the time, science is discovering that our well-being is influenced by a very different kind of timepiece. Circadian rhythms---the human body’s own internal(体内的) clock---have a powerful influence on our health and behavior. They are programmed from birth and control functions ranging from temperature and blood pressure to sleep patterns.
In recent years researchers have also discovered that this built-in mechanism（内在机制）can influence everything from the way we react to medicines to how well we learn music.
The latest example, from experts at Harvard University in the US, shows that the human body clock can even influence whether or not we are likely to tell the truth. Researchers found it was easier for people to tell lies in the afternoon because, as they were tired, the self control that would normally prevent them from lying started to break down. Tiredness made it easier for them to tell lies---especially if it meant they got a financial reward at the end.
“The body clock has a great effect on us all,” says Professor Jim Horne from the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University. “Most people tend to feel good around late morning and then decline in the early afternoon. But the time most of us will feel our sharpest is between 6 pm and 8 pm. That’s because sleepiness tends to build up throughout the day. By early evening our body clock kicks in to wake us up. One reason may be to ensure we get home safely. When our ancestors(祖先) were coming home after hunting all day their internal clocks kicked in to get them home in one piece.”
