Will there ever be another Einstein? Scientists say a new Einstein will appear, but it may take a long time. After all, more than 200 years separated Einstein from his nearest rival (对手) , Isaac Newton. Many physicists say the next Einstein hasn't been born yet, or is only a baby now. That’s because the searching for a unified (统一的) theory that would explain all the forces of nature has pushed current mathematics to its limits. New math must be created before the problem can be solved. But researchers say there are many other factors working against another Einstein appearing anytime soon. For one thing, physics is quite a different field today. In Einstein's day, there were a few thousand physicists worldwide, and fewer theoreticians. Education is different, too. One extremely important aspect of Einstein's training that failed to be considered is the philosophy he read as a teenager. It taught him how to think theoretically about space and time. And he was a skilled musician. The interplay between music and math is well known. Einstein would fiercely play his violin as a way to think through a knotty physics problem. Today, universities have produced millions of physicists. There aren’t many jobs in science for them, so they go to Wall Street and Silicon Valley to apply their analytical skills to more practical and rewarding efforts. Besides, those who stay in science don’t work alone. It’s very difficult to imagine an independent person like Einstein ever tolerating this. 1. Which of the following best explains why the next Einstein hasn’t been born yet? A. Education today doesn’t pay enough attention to philosophy teaching. B. It isn’t known who will be another Einstein among newly-born babies. C. There were more physicists in Einstein's time than today. D. Math today is limited and cannot help the further development of physics. 2. One of the reasons that made Einstein a great scientist is ______. A. the lack of physicists in his day B. learning from Isaac Newton C. the philosophy he read in his teens D. not going to work at Wall Street 3. A. difficult and puzzling B. interesting and useful C. important and meaningful D. realistic and hard B About H1N1 2009 H1N1 viruses are not spread by food. Keeping a safe distance is recommended. Studies have also shown that flu virus can survive on object surfaces for 2 to 8 hours. Sometimes viruses can be spread when a person touches something like the surface of a desk that is polluted with droplets, and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth before washing their hands. Centers for Disease Control C There are two basic ways to see growth: one as a product, the other as a process. People have generally viewed personal growth as an external (外部的,表面的)result or a product that can easily be identified and measured. The worker who gets a rise, the student whose grades improve, the foreigner who learns a new language—all these examples of people who have measurable results to show for their efforts. By contrast , the process of personal growth is much more difficult to determine, since it is a journey and not the specific signposts(路标) or landmarks along the way.The process is not the road itself, but the attitudes, feelings people have , and their caution or courage, as they meet with new experiences and unexpected difficulties. In this process, the journey never really ends;there are always new ways to experience the world, new ideas to try, new challenges to accept. In order to grow, to travel new roads, people need to have a willingness to take risks, to face the unknown, and to accept the possibility that they may “fail” at first. How we see ourselves as we try a new way of being is necessary for our ability to grow.Do we see ourselves as quick and curious? If so, we tend to take more chances and be more open to unfamiliar experiences.Do we think we’re shy and indecisive? Then our sense of fear can cause us to hesitate, to move slowly, and we think we are slow to adapt change or that we’re not smart enough to deal with a new challenge. Then we are likely to take a more passive role or not try at all. These feelings of insecurity and self-doubt are both unavoidable and necessary if we are to change and grow.If we protect ourselves too much, then we stop growing. We become trapped inside a shell of our own making. 8. In the author’s eye, one who views personal growth as a process would ______. A. succeed in climbing up the social ladder B. grow up from his own achievements C.aim high and reach his goal each time D. face difficulties and take up challenges 9. For personal growth, the author is in favor of all the following EXCEPT ______. A. being curious about more changes B. staying away from failures and challenges C. being quick in self-adaptation D. having an open mind to new experiences 10. Which of the following is true according to the passage? A. If you are too shy to take any risks in life, you cannot grow up. B. It is not so difficult to measure personal growth. C. To try and fail on the new road facing the unknown is avoidable. D. There are only two ways to see a person’s growth. 11.The best title for this passage should be ______. A. Facing New Challenges                  B. Overcoming Internal Fears C. Two Basic Ways of Growth D. Growth—Product or Process  D Do you want to live with a strong sense of peacefulness, happiness, goodness, and self- respect? The collection of happiness actions broadly categorized as "honor" help you create this life of good feelings. Here's an example to show how honorable actions create happiness. Say a store clerk fails to charge us for an item. If we keep silent, and profit from the clerk's mistake, we would drive home with a sense of sneaky(暗中的) excitement. Later we might tell our family or friends about our good fortune. On the other hand, if we tell the clerk about the uncharged item, the clerk would be grateful and thank us for our honesty. We would leave the store with a quiet sense of honor that we might never share with another soul. Then, what is it to do with our sense of happiness? In the first case, where we don't tell the clerk, a couple of things would happen. Deep down inside we would know ourselves as a type of thief. In the process, we would lose some peace of mind and self-respect. We would also demonstrate(证明) that we cannot lie trusted, since we advertise our dishonor by telling our family and friends. We damage our own reputations by telling others. In contrast, bringing the error to the clerk's attention causes different things to happen. Immediately the clerk knows us to be honorable. Upon leaving the store, we feel honorable and our self-respect is increased.  Whenever we take honorable action we gain the deep internal rewards of goodness and a sense of nobility. There is a beautiful positive cycle that is created by living a life of honorable actions. Honorable thoughts lead to honorable actions. Honorable actions lead us to a happier existence. And it's easy to think and act honorably again when we're happy. While the positive cycle can be difficult to start, once it's started, it's easy to continue. Keeping on doing good deeds brings us peace of mind, which is important for our happiness. 12. According to the passage, the positive action in the example contributes to our_______.    A. friendly relationship B. financial rewards C. advertising ability  D. self-respect     13. The author thinks that keeping silent about the uncharged item is equal to_______. A. lying B. cheating  C. stealing        D. advertising 14. How will we feel if we let the clerk know her mistake? A. We'll be very excited.              B. We'll feel unfortunate. C. We'll feel sorry for the clerk. D. We'll have a sense of honor.         15. This passage mainly talks about_______.    A. happiness through honorable actions B. how to live truthfully             C. importance of peacefulness D. ways of gaining self-respect      第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 There is an English saying: “ 16 .” Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. 18 .If laughter exercises the body,it must be beneficial. Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body.
