since antiquity for both ceremonial and practical purposes. They are usually worn on the face, although they may also be positioned for effect elsewhere on the wearers body.9 One of the challenges in the study of man is finding the precise derivation of his culture and early activities, with the invention and use of the mask only area of unsolved inquiry. The use of masks dates back to several millennia. It is conjectured that the first mask may have generally been used by primitive man to associate wearer with some kind of unimpeachable authority.10 Masks are familiar and vivid element in many folk and traditional pageants, ceremonies, rituals and festivals, and are often with an ancient origin. The mask is normally a part of custom that adorns the whole body and embodies a traditional importance to the religious and social life of the community as whole or particular group within the community.11Nowadays masks are usually make of plastic material, often are associated with popular films,TV programs or cartoon characters-they are ,however, reminders of enduring power of pretence and play and the power and appear of masks.12 Ritual masks occur throughout the world, and although they tend to share many characteristics, highly distinctive forms have developed. The function of the masks may be magical or religious;they may appear in rites of passage or make-up for a form of theatre.13Particular and beautiful types of masks for performance.14 In China, masks are thought to have originatly in ancient religious ceremonies.Images of people wearing masks have been found in rock paintings along the Yangtze River.Later mask forms brings together myths and symbols from Shamanism Buddhism.Opera masks were used a basic“common”form of opera performed without a stage or backdrops. These led to colorful facial patterns that we see in todays Jingju(Beijing opera).15shadow show16.Shadow show is a type of drama which has its roots in China. The Chinese shadow theatre is a form of puppetry that is performed by moving figures made of animal skins or cardboard held behing a screen lit by lamplight. The subject matter and singing style in shadow plays are closely related to Chinese opera, except without using live actors or actresses.17.Shadow puppets were first made of paper sculpture, later from the hides of donkeys or oxen. That is why the Chinese name for shadow puppet is Pi Ying, which means shadows of hides.18.Shadow puppet shows were very popular during the Tang and Song Dynasties. The show began to spread to Europe in the mid-18th century, when French missionaries to China took it back to France in 1767 and put on performance in Paris, which caused quite a stir at that time.19.The puppets in the shadow play are made of translucent leather.Chinese shadow artists first carve out the lines of the design and then dye them in bright colors. These transparent leather puppets become very lively and beautiful under the lantern light.Today, when the motion picture and television have become wide spread throughout the world, foreign tourists in China are still keen to see a performance of this ancient dramatic art.20.Dough figurines(面塑)Nearly every family in the city molded dough pieces during the Spring Festival. They looked nice and tasted good, representing a splendid harvest and wishes for good luck. They were also toys for children.Today,dough-modeling handicraftsmen have turned the products into visual artworks.21.The custom of making dough figurines can be traced back to the late Yuan Dynasty. At the time,Datong people were suppressed by foreign ethnic groups.During fights against rulers, the rebel group would stuff notes inside the dough figurines to deliver secret information.22.After new China was founded in 1949,dough figurines became more delicate and some were even dyed in different colors. Many housewives prefer to carve pictures on the figurines to display their ingenuity and to win praise from relatives and friends.23.24.Folk artist
