modernization,he successfully led his country through American Civil War.What Was Happening Historically?When President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on April 14,1865,the whole nation was plunged into shock,and poems and songs were written mourning the nations loss.A Grieving NationOne American who grieved for the fallen president was the poet Walt Whitman.He had lived in Washington for most of the war and was a great admirer of Lincoln,whom he felt embodied the American virtues of plain-spokenness,and courage.He often saw the president riding around town on horseback,and they sometimes exchanged cordial bows.Death as InspirationLincolns death inspired Whitman to write one of his most memorable worksa simple,three-stanza elegy(a poem written to honor someone who has died.哀歌)O
